I fell into Charles's arms with ease as he held me tightly, and we danced to the upbeat song that was blaring through the speakers. Not knowing how to dance to this kind of music, I followed Charles's lead as he swung me round and round without letting go. My head began to feel lighter, and I could think freely, as if the day had never happened or that our maker stood in the same room as us, as he watched us both with great enthusiasm and with a thoughtful expression.
"Charles, he knows something. I can see him watching us," I said.
Although vampires have extraordinary hearing, I was making sure to keep my voice barely a whisper to ensure that he couldn't hear me.
"Don't worry, he can't do anything here. It would be too dangerous," he whispered back as he held me close in his arms.
I tried to relax again and wondered where my carefree spirit had gone and why I suddenly felt apprehensive.
