Chapter 16 - In The Shadows

Time passed by minute after minute, and Wilder was still stuck inside the treadmill, running at full speed while dodging to the best of his abilities.

"Remarkable," Liam's mother stood at the side taking notes with a tablet while Wilder toiled.

After about 20 minutes, the treadmill slowed down, but it didn't completely stop. This gave Wilder some time to get his energy back.

"Please stop the machine," Wilder struggled to say.

"Are you aware that you have a very remarkable physique?" Liam's mother spoke as if she hadn't heard a single word from Wilder.

She then went on an incoherent rant about things that Wilder couldn't even muster the strength to understand; he was really tired.

But she didn't relent; minutes later, she upped the speed and increased the rate of fire of the lasers.

Wilder had basically become a lab rat in the truest sense.

Next day

Wilder's residential building

"Click," a door swung open, and Wilder's silhouette could be seen walking very slowly into his room.

He was drenched in sweat; in fact, his cane was the only thing propping him up at this point, so it was a good thing that he brought it with him.

Liam's mom had kept him there all night; it was absolute torture. Sometimes it would feel like his body was failing, then she would toss in an apple and make Wilder continue running and dodging lasers.

In all honesty, if he were asked how he survived without fainting, he would not be able to give a simple response.

The funny thing was that she still requested that he come back for more training the next day; of course, Wilder agreed, and at that point, he would do anything to get out of there.

But would he go back?

Impossible!!

"Boom!" He landed directly on his bed.

And not even a second later, he was asleep.

,,,,,,,,,,

Meanwhile, in Liam's family mansion

Liam's mom, Lilian, could be seen seated on a chair, going through a bunch of papers with utmost intrigue.

"I've never handled an abnormal like this before. Let him be for a while. After that, I'll consider letting you recruit him," Liam's mother said out loud.

In the shadows of the room, a fairly tall man in black could be observed.

"Sure, have your fun, but you better make sure he doesn't get discovered by them," the man said as he walked backwards and disappeared in the darkness.

"Hehe, we are going to have some fun, kid. Just wait till I'm done with you; they will wish they had you." Liam's mother smiled as she was still glued to the documents in hand.

Noon that day

"Arg!" Wilder propped himself up from the bed.

It was in the middle of the day, and Wilder had slept like a baby after going through all that through the night. He merged with his bed completely and had a nice sleep.

After waking up, he didn't feel any soreness in his body whatsoever; it was weird considering what he had just been through.

"hm?" Wilder smelt his clothes and was immediately repulsed.

He smelt really bad, so he went ahead to take a shower, cleaning himself from head to toe.

But as soon as he came out of the shower, he was besieged by several messages on his watch. Wilder slid the watch's main face from the holder, and it stretched out into a glass phone.

Society will evolve in the direction nature has set for them; the reason watches became the go-to communication devices was because they were more convenient when training or running for your life; in this time and age, it was essential.

Naturally, Wilder did not like it one bit. He was from the 21st century, and the handheld phone was more his style, and fortunately, there was an option to use your watch as a normal phone.

"Hehe, it looks like I missed out," Wilder said as he stared at the screen.

There were countless messages from his party for him to log in, but unfortunately he couldn't since he was 'preoccupied' with other stuff.

"Oh well," Wilder said as he put on some clothes and entered the gaming cabin.

"Hmm," Wilder said as he woke up in his room inside Jade Beast Town.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"I will have some tea, thank you," Wilder said to the waitress inside one of the makeshift restaurants they would normally frequent in the town.

Right outside the restaurant were two male NPCs walking along the main road of the town. It looked like they were just going around minding their own business, but that was far from the truth, and he knew it.

These guys were members of the Jade Beast cult, and the one to the left was the so-called successor.

He was actually quite weak for an important person, only being at warrior level 2, but he had a bodyguard around warrior level 6 who was always towering by his side.

These were his assurances.

"Going as planned, I guess," Wilder said while observing the Jade Beast cult members walk out from the town square to the forest.

He had mounted surveillance on them the day after he received the mission, so he sort of knew where they were headed.

"3 copper," he paid for the tea and started following them from a good distance.

These guys would frequent an underground cave from time to time doing god knows what; most of the players would not notice their strange movement at this time of day as the people that could afford to play high heaven all day would do their best to leave the low-level towns, and Jade Beast Town in particular was one of the least popular towns.

The only people that entered through this town were military academy students, and they were busy in the academy at this time of day.

Soon wilder found himself in front of a cave deep inside jade beast forest, this was not in the monster wolf's territory though so he didn't really have much to worry about

"Now how do I go about this?" Wilder mused while watching the huge knight NPCs stand guard at the cave entrance.

NPC guard: Nickolas

Rank: warrior, level 6

Class: guardian

HP: 5,000

Wilder looked to the side of the cave with a sly smile and then proceeded to open up the control panel.
