Adeline sat in her office, writing up her notes from the newest crime scene when Jack entered her office.
"Good morning sir" Adeline smiled.
"We need to talk" he grumbled taking a seat opposite her, from his tone she knew that it was serious.
"What about?" She asked him, setting her notes aside.
"A police officer was shot early this morning" he told her.
"I'm sorry. Did you know him?" She asked.
"I have reason to believe that you did" Jack announced, waiting for her reaction but she didn't give on "The officer that died was Sam Olsen" he told her and this time she took in a deep breath.
"God" she said shakily, letting the breath out again.
"Care to explain yourself?" Jack asked.
"He came to my home. Wednesday and Thursday night" She told him.
"What for?" He asked.
"I think you already know" Adeline said avoiding his judging gaze.
"He was a married man with a young son, Addie" he said angrily.
"That's his business" she said angrily finally meeting his eyes again.
"That'll bring comfort to his widow. Her husband's last moments were spent in your bed" he shouted angrily.
"You were a married man, when you spent a few nights in my bed" she said calmly.
"A high ranking police officer should display high levels of personal integrity. Demonstrate professional, ethical, and moral standards. Learn some self control!" He shouted angrily again, this time rising from his seat.
"He isn't part of my unit, it was just two nights. I didn't think he was going to end up dead" Adeline replied calmly.
"You don't think do you? That's your problem, you can't play the victim card anymore Addie-"
"I never have! At least I don't play this stupid charade!" She yelled back, rising from her chair in anger. She turned to leave but he stopped her, catching her by her wrist.
"And what role am I playing exactly?" He asked, holding her wrist tightly.
"You know exactly. Don't act all innocent Jack" she said, snatching her hand away before leaving her office. She watched her team as they all instantly returned back to their work at the sight of her. They had all been listening.
Adeline and Jack sat in a conference room, discussing the upcoming press conference they were holding for the victims. Jack's press secretary Chloe took notes.
"We shouldn't call them highly qualified" Adeline told her.
"Why?" Jack asked.
"He could kill a prostitute next psychoanalytics is not an exact science" she told him "Let's not refer to them as innocent as well" Adeline told her.
"They were innocent" Jack countered.
"The media loves to divide women. Virgins and vamps. Angels or whores. Let's not encourage them" Adeline said, the tension in the room rising from their previous conversation, as the press secretary sat awkwardly in the middle of their argument.
Jack and Adeline walked up to the desk facing the rows of reporters. Jack took his seat and Adeline followed but the button protecting her chest from prying eyes opened, revealing her chest to the world.
"Hello, I'm assistant chief constable Wilson and I am overseeing this murder enquiry with help from detective Superintendent Thompson and her team. Let's begin" Jack said, opening up to questions.
"We're the victims known to each other?" One reporter asked.
"We don't believe so no" Adeline answered.
"We're there any signs of sexual assault on any or all of the victims?" Another asked.
"I don't feel comfortable exclosing that information at this time" Adeline answered.
"Why are you here in Manchester? Is the Manchester Police not capable of solving this case on their own?" Dave Lions, the reporter from the other night asked.
"I brought detective Superintendent Thompson in on this case because of her extensive background in psychoanalytics and behavioural science. Her expertise would allow those officers working on this case to learn from her for future investigations" Jack explained, standing up for her. Adeline weakly smiled at him before turning her attention to the press secretary at the back of the room. Chloe was standing there pulling on the front of her blouse, Adeline took the hint and felt hers for the button that should've been closed. She quickly did it up focusing on the next question.
Jack stood in the hallway, his back against the wall. Adeline entered the hallway, her back resting against the opposite wall.
"It could've been worse" Adeline joked and Jack smiled at her.
"That guy Dave Lions, he's an ass. No wonder you declined his offer" Jack joked.
"And he's not exactly my type" she said absentmindedly, forgetting she was talking to her past lover.
"You need to get gun certified, book yourself in at the range" he told her, changing the subject.
"I don't have time" she replied.
"This is Birmingham, make time" he replied.
"Well done for spotting the wardrobe malfunction" Chloe said, entering the hallway, ending their moment alone.
"Clevage?" Adeline asked.
"Just a bit. I think you got away with it though" Chloe said with a nod.
"I'll leave you to it" Adeline smiled at them both before heading down the hallway, feeling Jack's eyes on her the whole way.
