Adeline was lying in her bed in her home. The walls were pink and toys covered the floor. The door opened and a shadowy figure entered. Adeline couldn't move. She was frozen. Unable to move. She watched as he got closer and closer, whispering to her but she couldn't hear him over her panting breaths.
"No! Please no! Not again!" Adeline pleaded as she tried to push him off her.
Adeline shot back in her chair, her heart racing, her breaths coming in quick pants.
"I'm here Addie. He can't hurt you" Jack was knelt on the floor, his hands on her waist.
"It felt so real, like it just happened" Adeline panted quickly.
"Just look at me Addie. He's not here" Jack said holding her gaze, her breaths slowing.
"God" Adeline breathed out, feeling her temples.
"It's ok" Jack repeated, taking her hand, giving her a small smile.
"Ma'am" Pierce's voice broke through their moment and Adeline realized that her team was surrounding her. They had discovered an imprint of a child's drawing under the note he had left for her, Adeline couldn't remember when she fell asleep.
"What is it?" Adeline asked, composing herself, pulling her hand out of Jack's.
"There's been an attempted murder of another woman" Pierce told her.
"Let's get to the crime scene" Adeline told her team, as she moved to leave Jack caught her by her wrist.
"You need to call Dr Hale. Your not sleeping again" Jack pressed her.
"I don't need him, and I don't need you to worry over me" Adeline said with anger in her tone, snatching her hand back before walking off.
There was a red headed woman who had been strangled after catching the killer with her friend. The woman the killer targeted was in hospital, unconscious.
Adeline entered the home, she saw Cassie working on the dead girl near the kitchen. Adeline made her way upstairs, finding the girls bedroom, the covers were thrown back and their were tights on the bed that he used to tie her up.
Adeline stared at the bed. Memories of the police searching their home returned to her. Memories of how they stripped her bed and took apart her whole room for evidence.
"Addie" Came Jack's voice behind her.
"Someone once said 'I once was a child with innocent eyes' I think about that quote a lot" Addie said, her eyes not leaving the bed.
"If this is too hard for you, you just say the word. I'll take you off this case. No questions asked" Jack said coming to stand next to her.
"It's funny isn't it? The things you can't quite remember and the things you can never forget" Adeline said meeting his eye "I'm fine" she whispered, giving him a weak smile.
"I've been demoted for the remainder of the investigation to watch over you. If you need help, lean on me" he smiled at her.
"For a man who's just lost his job you seem oddly cheerful" Adeline smiled at him.
"Only because I get to work with you" He smiled back.
"Ma'am. We found another note" Taylor said, breaking the moment.
Adeline and her team gathered around the conference table with the note.
Adeline translated the note from Latin to English "Adeline. Adeline. Why haven't you found me yet? If Samantha ever wakes up maybe you'll get closer to finding me. We're all killers Adeline. We've all killed parts of ourselves to stay alive. Something somewhere had to die so we could stay alive. I hope to see you again Adeline, to hear your voice again. My project is coming together and your part will be made clear" Adeline read out.
"He's fixated on you" Jack said.
"Is that good or bad?" Pierce asked.
"His fixation could mean that the time frame between kills could grow, or he could target me. Either way we catch him" Adeline explained.
"Why am I not not entirely behind this plan" Taylor said sarcastically.
"It's my ass on the line, don't worry" Adeline smiled.
"It's both our asses on the line" Jack muttered just loud enough for them all to hear.
