Adeline sat in front of the rows of reporters. She had chosen a red blouse that showed of her chest and a black skirt that had a slit up the side. She made sure to move her hair, letting the killer see her nails.
"This man is severely obsessed with the women he targets. He sees himself as inferior to them. He is a coward. He watches these women from the shadows. He obsesses over them from their routine, to his rituals with them" Adeline told them. She had set the trap, now all she had to do was wait for him to come out of hiding.
Adeline and her team waiting by the phones, waiting for a call to say someone, somewhere had received a note from him.
"Anything?" Jack asked as he entered the conference room.
"Nothing yet" Adeline replied with a deep sigh.
"Ma'am, it's Lizzie Borden's father. He received a note addressed to you" Detective Pierce smiled wide. Adeline let out a deep sigh of relief.
"Well done" Jack smiled, patting her shoulder.
"This doesn't make any sense at all" Taylor grumbled.
"It's giberish" Abbot added. Adeline picked the note up from the table, glancing at it.
"It's Latin" Adeline said and they stared at her in shock.
"You know Latin?" Abbot asked.
"I speak Latin, French, Italian and English" Adeline smiled seeing their looks of disbelief.
"Do you have the note?" Jack asked entering the room.
"Yes sir" Adeline said clearing her throat before reading it "I saw your press conference. So beautiful. So poised. I particularly like the nail varnish, was that for me? Of course it was. Your intrigued by me, as I am you. Who is Detective Superintendent Thompson? What makes you scream? What makes your toes curl? I like the tattoo on your wrist- a soldier born from the ashes. I want to know what ashes you were born from. My captivating project" Adeline read out loud.
"You have him" Jack said breaking the silence.
"Right where I want him" Adeline nodded.
"You have a tattoo? Ma'am" Pierce asked.
"On my wrist. I got it when I turned 18. It's in Latin too" Adeline explained, feeling her wrist.
"He called you his project. I hope you know what your getting into" Jack said and Adeline nodded.
Adeline took a deep breath before opening her door, this morning. It was in all the papers that she was having an affair with Sam Olsen, she got into work as fast as she could, ignoring the calls and the cameras.
Adeline marched up to her office as the male police officers whistled after her.
"Oi Oi, here she is lads" One man called as she walked past him in the hallway.
"Hey sweetheart can I get some action?" Another called after her.
"Fuck off. Neanderthals" Adeline called in response. As she entered the conference room, her team fell silent around the newspaper featuring her on the cover.
"Can we talk?" Cassie asked, pulling Adeline out of her frozen state.
"Sure" Adeline said leading her sister into her office.
"Is it true?" Cassie asked as Adeline placed her bag on the floor.
"There are pictures of him entering my home in the local newspapers. It must be true" Adeline sighed, stuffing her hands into her trouser pockets "What do you want to know?" Adeline asked seeing the angry expression across her face.
"I did the autopsy on Sam Olsen. There were scratches on his back, consistent with fingernails. The obvious suggestion was sex. There was female ejaculation still present on his body. His wife was asked if it was hers but she told us that it wasn't. The marks went unaccounted for in my report" Cassie explained.
"I'm surprised. Detective Superintendent Conan knew he came to my home. He shouldn't have withheld it" Adeline told her.
"You cut your nails" Cassie said looking at Adeline's hand.
"I did when I found out he died" Adeline said looking at her nails.
"His poor wife" Cassie frowned in anger.
"I didn't know he was married" Adeline frowned.
"Of course you didn't. You'll always be my slutty older sister" Cassie said through her teeth in anger.
"Your a child! You don't know what happened, and you ignore the facts because you can't handle the truth!" Addie yelled.
"What truth!? The truth is that you broke mom when you left. The truth is that you lied about dad, because you've always been a slut" Cassie yelled back.
"Mom is broken because of what dad did. I never lied Cassie. I told the truth to protect you! I didn't want you to hurt like I did for years!" Adeline yelled a tear falling from her eye.
"You know nothing of hurt-"
"You don't get to stand there and judge me for the things I have done because you don't know what I've had to face! You are a child. I am a woman. I love you Cassie, and no matter how you treat me that won't change because your always going to be my little sister, who I protected despite the pain it caused me! But you know nothing" Adeline yelled at her sister. Cassie groaned in frustration, storming out of Adeline's office.
"She saw the paper then" Jack said entering the office.
"Yes. She did" Adeline groaned squeezing her temples.
"Why are you dressed like that?" Jack asked motioning towards her outfit.
"I thought a less feminine outfit would be better because of the story" Adeline explained looking down at her trouser, suit combo.
"It isn't working" he muttered "I'm going to a meeting with the board about this. Do you need me to stay?" He asked.
"You can't miss that meeting, your lucky if you won't get fired for this. I'm sorry. You should go" Adeline told him, watching as he nodded and left the office.
