Chapter 2 - The unevolved.

It was the year 2075, in New York city.

The clear blue, azure sky was painted with an orange glow as the sun began to peak out from the horizon.

The large buildings glimmer as the rays of the golden sun shone down onto their large glass windows reflecting the outside.

The city was currently bustling with the liveliness of the citizens.

The sound of bus, cars and other different types of vehicles traverse through the city.

However, strangely enough there was a flash of light that moved at least three times faster than any of the moving vehicles. Some cars flew through the sky at an impossible speed.

While some people rode bikes that float ten meters above ground. There were humans who carried heavy and conspicuous weapons such as guns, swords and even shields.

Also, some humans could be seen flying in the sky, while others traverse a great distance by foot.

After humans underwent their evolution, becoming "Evolved human" And obtaining powers of different kind. The whole structure of society changed as a whole. After the mysterious mana appeared in the world, animals underwent their own kind of evolution.

Becoming bigger, stronger and more intelligent. Even the plants and trees gained supernatural powers and self-awareness.

Furthermore, creatures living in the vast seas became more dangerous, sharks grew five times bigger, some aquatic animals mutated and started appearing on land.

Humans were of course, the weakest of all evolved creatures that exist on planet earth. Modern weaponry wasn't enough to deal with the threat of beast and other magical beast.

In order to continue their existence against the new dangers of the new Era, humans adapt and awakened different powers and abilities.

Being able to cast magic spells and even so on.

In addition, an evolved humans' physical bodies are a hundred times stronger than an unevolved human, and they are capable of living up to 700 years on average.

Technology became more advanced as mana was implemented into their functions and even the geography of the world underwent a great change. As to what or why the mysterious 'Mana' Appeared on earth.

Unfortunately, that kind of information is unknown, scientists are still studying the working on the strange and unknown energy.

There were also multiple studies and experiments done on the body of the "Evolved humans" But so far there hasn't been anything that identify or uncover the energy known as mana.

Some people say that the gods has decided to grant the world their blessings, while others believe a witch cursed the world and triggered this phenomenon.

Many different opinions were made from every corner of the world about its sudden evolution. Of course, it was unknown whether this phenomenon was a blessing or a curse.

As living creatures all they could do was try and adapt to the new environment as much as possible.

In a certain academy, a young black-haired boy was currently seated inside his classroom reading one of his favourite comic books. His light ocean blue eyes swept across each page as his lips were upturned into a faint smile.

The boy's name was Carson Laurier, a 16-year-old student who currently attend the "magic academy" A school build solely for the purpose of educating and instructing each student on not only academics bit also combat.

As each evolved humans were necessary for not only the survival of the human race but also, they are the key players who will make sure the other races don't step out of line.

Currently, the beast race and human race were at odds with each other.

And battles usually break out quite frequently whenever one of the two races met.

The only race that has no hostile intention towards humans were the elven race that was currently outside all human bases.

Carson was a special case among the human race as he is the only human who has not evolved and underwent any kind of metamorphosis since the world underwent the path of evolution.

The evolution of the human race changes drastically depending on individual to individual. Some humans became mermaids while some became elves. There were even some cases where the human can become beasts and lose all rationality.

In any case, whenever humans are exposed to mana, they all underwent some kind of mutation of some sort, either gaining special abilities or becoming a variant of some kind.

Carson was the only human who have not evolved. Making it impossible for him to awaken any kind of special powers, without mana he can't even use magic which is available to all existences with mana circulating throughout their bodies.

Yes, despite being born from two powerful evolved humans for some strange reasons he was born without a single drop of mana.

Despite that Carson was currently attending a school that was built solely for the purpose of training evolved humans, naturally he was ostracized by those of his classmates and bullied on a daily basis.

However, Carson ignored all those who looked down on him and endured the constant bullying. He wasn't here to learn about magic or combat. Magic academy was currently one of the most prestigious institutions in the world right now.

If he could graduate from the academy, then he could get into the college he wanted.

As for awakening his own powers, he had already given up on such a dream a long time ago.

Of course, during his younger days he was naturally disappointed and devastated that he would never be able to become an evolved human.

However, after maturing he eventually gave up on such a dream and decided to simply live his life however he wishes.

After he finish reading the comic book Carson got to his feet and left the classroom still filled with students, he traverses through the crowded corridor as other students talked among themselves and went outside towards the vending machine.

After he placed a small coin inside the machine, he took out a can of soda.

After he drank the soda for a few seconds Carson let out a satisfied sigh as he turned his gaze towards the vast blue sky enjoying the nice weather.

However, his expression changed as he notices three people were making their way towards him from behind.

For an instant, his normally calm expression showed one of annoyance before returning back towards their usual neutral and indifferent look as he turned to face them. "Hey, Carson why don't we do some target practice again?" A young blonde-haired boy, dressed in a blue and black uniform who seem to be either 16 or 17 said with a faint smile adorning his face.

"... Target practice, you mean you throwing fire balls at me again while I run and hide? No thanks, unlike you who seem to have all the time in the world I have something I need to do." Carson replied indifferently.

The three young men who appeared before Carson were known as the 'Three troublemakers' Of the academy. Particularly, the one in the lead. Caden Elrod, he is the son of a powerful family that specializes in fire manipulation.

As someone who was born from a powerful family, he was naturally spoiled and pampered his entire life, resulting in his usual arrogant and haughty personality as he looked down on those he deemed as beneath him.

As Carson was considered a failure as someone who was unable to evolve, he was the one Caden bullied the most.

Of course, Carson had already made various reports to the teachers of the academy, but aside from giving Caden a little scolding nothing significant changed as he kept up his bullying.

The teachers couldn't afford to start any bad relations with the Elrod family. And so, Carson had to endure the brunt of their constant bullying and go along with Caden's wimps as he had no way to fight back against him.

"Don't be like that, you can also consider it training. Wouldn't your weak unevolved body become more flexible with all your running?" Caden sneered as he asked.

The other two boys behind Caden chuckled mockingly at that.

Carson could only sigh as he finishes his can of soda, he turned on his heels and left. Talking with them would only be a waste of time.

"Hmph, turning your back you never learn." As Caden saw Carson turning his back, a fierce glint shone in his eyes as he held out his hand.

A small ball of crimson flame appeared, measuring roughly ten meters in diameter and he threw it towards Carson's back.

Swoosh!...

Instinctively Carson's eyes widen as he suddenly felt a sense of danger, and promptly lowered his upper body.

Bang!

The crimson flames flew above Carson's head and collided with a wall in the distance before dispersing dramatically! "Guh." Carson rolled onto the ground as he gasps. Cold sweat slid down his back as he felt the intense heat from the earlier attack.

'Th-That guy... Is he really trying to kill me?' He wondered. Carson's human body was definitely not strong enough to endure that attack just now, had he not lowered his head on time he would definitely have sustained a grave deal of injury just now.

"Hahahaha! Nice, not bad... Looks like all that running away have allowed your instinct to become sharper, see didn't I tell you this is good training?" Caden cackled gleefully as crimson flames spread throughout both of his hand and covered his entire arm. Seeing that Carson's face became pale as the blood drained from his face.

Without thinking Caden thrust both his arm outwards, releasing a sea of crimson flames towards Carson who was still on the ground!

'Shit! I... I won't be able to move away in time!' A feeling of dread overcame him as his face was illuminated with a faint crimson glow and his pupils reflected the sight of the crimson flames heading towards him.

Without being able to shield himself Carson could only reflexively close his eyes as he sunk into a feeling of despair.

However, just as the sea of crimson flames was about to consume him a light pink transparent barrier appeared between them, shielding him from the sea of flames.
