"AHHHHHH"
A child ran to the door in desperation.
BANG
"Please let this be clean," the man mocked out loud. Immediately, everyone shot out of their desks and headed for the door. The rest of the soldiers raised their guns and began to plow down the kids.
Evelyn knocked her table over and hid behind it. She knew it was impossible to escape, so she sat quietly covering her ears and shaking.
After what seemed like an eternity, the gunfire stopped. Evelyn's eyes darted around in fear. She heard footsteps approaching.
SLASH
The footsteps stopped
"Holy- Is this piss?," the scared-face man began cackling hysterically. He clutched his stomach as he threw the table shielding Evelyn away.
He almost toppled over from laughter once he saw the the puddle around her.
"Thank you for the big laugh," he wiped his tears and pressed the barrel on her forehead.
"Get up," he suddenly said in a cold voice. Evelyn's eyes widened in fear. She remembered the voice just from the morning.
She felt a swirl of emotions as she stared down the barrel and the man. She was tired of feeling fear at the hands these monsters. They enjoyed it. Bubbling anger rose from within.
"I-I'll kill you all," her black pupils shimmered violently.
Although her voice was hoarse and cracked, she rolled her hands into a fist.
"You can try to from your grave," he shrugged his shoulders.
He placed his finger on the trigger and smiled wide. His eyes gleamed in delight.
CRACK
Suddenly, his neck twisted at a impossible angle and he fell down. Evelyn shifted back in more surprise. The man was dead.
'M-magic?'
Evelyn overheard stories of people who possessed incredible power blessed by God. However, these were just rumors. Evelyn couldn't remove her eyes from the man's corpse.
"EVELYN"
She heard a familiar voice shout her name. The man's golden hair and the lady's autumn hair bounced in the air as they ran up to Evelyn and hugged her. Evelyn wept profusely in relief.
She tried to explain how they planned to massacre them all, but her words were short and broken.
"It's okay. We are all fine," the lady stroked the back of Evelyn's head. They sat huddled together until Evelyn finally stopped wheezing.
The warmth was unexplainable to Evelyn. It was a foreign feeling of safety and security. If it was up to her she would freeze this moment forever.
"Dear, I need you to do something for us," the man began first.
They grabbed Evelyn and headed toward the basement of the building. They stopped in front of a inconspicuous wall.
"Want to see something cool," the man smirked. He waved his hand over the surface, and the wall immediately disappeared.
Evelyn raised her eyebrows in surprise. She was so overwhelmed with emotions that she actually forgot the unorthodox death of the man upstairs. Before she could ask a question, they grabbed and pulled her inside.
The small room was poorly lit except for the few candles that laid around. Evelyn's focus, however, was on the people standing around. She recognized a few as friends of the couple.
"Stand in the middle," the man pushed Evelyn to the center. Without another word, everyone surrounded her in a ring.
Finally, Evelyn asked "What's going on?"
She felt an ominous foreboding. She looked to the man and lady, but they just smiled in response.
It was the kind of smile they gave when they were proud of her, or when she caught them just randomly staring. However, something was different now. It wasn't a happy smile. Evelyn finally noticed. It was a goodbye smile.
Subconsciously, she began to reach out toward them, but a mysterious force locked her in place.
The group held hands and began to chant together. Strangely, they were not words Evelyn could decipher.
She felt a headache and covered her ears. A blue hue basked the group and grew fiercer as they chanted louder.
Evelyn called out again, but her voice diluted under their incredibly loud chants. Just as they reached a climax, they suddenly stopped.
"Evelyn although we are not your real parents, it was more than a blessing to raise you. I love you so much, so please be happy." The lady broke out into sobs.
Next, the man began, "Listen carefully. Everyone here agreed to give themselves for you to live a second chance. Be strong and live to the fullest with no regrets."
His face was stoic, but tears hung around the corners of his eyes.
"We love you," they both said.
It cemented in Evelyn's heart this really was goodbye. Her throat dried and tears mixed with snot trickled down her face. She flung herself wildly, but could not move.
"WHAT IS GOING ON HERE"
A loud voice echoed down the hall. Dozens of footsteps marched in on the group. They re-focused their chanting hurriedly.
A blinding white light began to enveloped the entire area.
BANG BANG BANG
However, Evelyn could still bodies drop as they were riddled with bullets. The last thing she saw was the couple waving toward her with the same smile.
BANG BANG
Their bodies dropped with each a hole torn in their foreheads.
