Chereads / A Poisonous Cut / Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Evelyn walked down the dark street. The sun had yet to rise. She weaved through piles of broken building parts littered through the unpaved and dirty streets. Various trash crunched under worn out shoes. She clutched on to a dark leather handbag and frowned.

She wore an all black attire except for the large blue star above her right breast pocket. There were a few kids like her that walked in the same direction, but it was mostly adults who dragged themselves groggily to work. However, all of them had the same blue star on the right breast.

VROOM

Suddenly, multiple large military trucks raced by. Soldiers in bright red armor filled the streets.

SLAM

Evelyn whipped her head around and watched a male citizen fall. His head banged against the floor so hard he bled. Multiple soldiers flocked around him and began to laugh. Although Evelyn didn't see, she immediately knew they tripped him. The man rolled around the floor silently and bit his lips to prevent himself from screaming. He shut his eyes in fear that he would accidentally glare at the soldiers. Evelyn grit her teeth and left.

After she walked around for hours, she arrived in front of a large wooden building. The area around was deserted and gloomy, similar to an abandoned town. Evelyn glanced up and smiled as she watched the beautiful sun rise. A dreamy mix of purple and pink shades blanketed the horizon. She stared at the horizon in tranquility.

BANG

The sound was all to familiar to Evelyn, a gunshot.

She threw herself to the ground at the loud noise and curled into fetus position, hoping to disappear.

WHACK

A heavy hit connected with her back. She coughed up spit at the unexpected blow.

"Get up," a cold voice echoed over her.

She didn't respond. Dead silent seconds past, but she could not move. Only her body shook violently in fear. Suddenly, she felt a cold metal pressed against the back of her head. Immediately, she stopped shaking.

"I wont repeat myself"

Evelyn slowly raised herself. A looming death hung over her. She stood still awaiting new orders from the voice.

She almost let out a sigh once she felt the gun removed from her head.

"Go to class immediately," the voice continued harshly. Without looking back, Evelyn dashed for her bag and scurried inside.

The building was old and moldy. She ran up the creaking stairs. There was not a single person in the halls.

Evelyn continued to navigate through the building and arrived in front of what looked like an abandoned classroom.

After brushing the dirt off her clothes and fixing her long hair, she opened the heavy door forcefully and went in. She kept her head down and headed toward the back.

Originally, the building was designed to house all Traut children throughout their entire education. Of course, many children left the poorly funded school to work instead. Now, the large old building was empty. All the children remaining huddled in one classroom, but they still did not fill all the seats. The number of teachers also trickled down until there was only one left.

"Do the problem on the board," an old shy lady stood in front of the class. She had a sweet smile and a flowery scent.

Evelyn pulled out a torn old paper out of her bag and a tiny lead tip. She made sure to write as small as she could to save paper.

***

"Class is over"

The room had no windows, so she only knew the day ended when the teacher dismissed them. Usually, Evelyn could guess the time, but today felt quicker than normal.

CREEK

The door to the room slid open. A horde of guards in bright red armor filled the room. The old lady stepped back in shock, but did not say a word.

A man in a darker red uniform moved to the center. He took off his helmet. His hair was short and dark brown. Evelyn first noticed a long scar that ran across his cheek.

"It is unfortunate that only you all remain," he began suddenly. "It takes a great amount of dedication to seek knowledge despite your circumstances."

An odd atmosphere hung over the classroom. Evelyn moved to the edge of her seat in suspense. Something felt wrong.

The man randomly broke out into laughter. He hugged his body as if he struggled to hold something in.

"But it must take a greater amount of idiocy to continue coming a this dump. I applaud you all for being the stupidest bunch," he began to clap his hands.

He quickly reached for his gun and held it at the old lady next to him.

BANG

Blood exploded and splattered onto his armor. Evelyn quickly covered her ears.

THUD

Her body fell helplessly onto the cold floor. A student began to open his mouth to scream.

BANG

The man cut him off and shot him right in the middle of his eyes.

"If you feel a sense of injustice, don't worry. The Federation order this for every one of you scum. Oh yes! I almost forgot," he quickly took out a single crumbled up paper.

"To celebrate the new era, the Federation has the following message: Effective today - 19XX - all Traut members and associates will be disposed of. We ask of you to remember your sin as you join your ancestors in never ending hell."

Evelyn's eyes shot open almost bulging out. This was the day that they would all be killed.
