Chapter 5 - Chapter Five - Devil

Skylar pointed at the page titled 'psychiatrist diagnosis of the patient.'

"Here," she said as she tapped her finger on the page, she read the sentence she quoted aloud. "The subject could potentially be inserted in the category of a psychopath, he had shown repeatedly impulsive behavior, irritability, and aggressivity. He seems to have a lack of remorse, empathy, and regard for the law. The testimonials of the victims or people who got in touch with him all reveal some sort of addiction and need for power, control, and esteem for both himself and others. The subject, based on the analyzis of crimes and the material gathered from the testimony shows clear signs of a sociopatic behavior with an extreme need to be internal or he could potentially be a danger for both himself and others." She read the description of the diagnosis the psichiatrist of FBI did based on Demon's past and the cases he was linked to.

"I'm not following you Skylar, what is that supposed to mean?" The officer asked, that was nothing new for him, nothing that he hadn't heard and read already a thousand times. Many of the innates they caught were psychopath and had the same diagnosis.

Skylar continued to read, "His lack of emotions and trust reveal a high chance he could have potentially experienced something traumatic in the past that lead him to change forever. Indeed, in his murders, he shows an uncommon logical sense and some sort of motive beside. As bizarre and uncommon as it may sound he must have a moral. For the following reason, we deduce his crimes are a sick way to rebel and avenge something that happened to him probably in his childhood generating in him unconditional anger he has to reveal through violence."

The officer shook his head again and frowned his eyebrows, "I still don't get it."

"That's the same thing the therapists said to me after my relatives died when I was 8. I got hospitalized and psychiatrists said the traumatic events could lead me to avoid behavior and loss of emotions and trust. Eventually, I would end up being violent and being a potential danger for myself and people around me."

Officer massaged his head, "so?"

Skylar sighed, "I have a theory. He may have lost his relatives in a terrible way when he was young. That could be our first piece of information. He must be in his early 30 so if my theory is correct he probably lost his relatives before he turned 10. Let's look for people who died 20 years ago in Kasyrgan. Maybe we are closer than we thought."

Her eyes fell on the photo of that 15 years old kid, she felt something in her heart vibrating in understanding and sadness at the same time. She felt sorry for him, she could feel how he felt losing her relatives in a early age, growing up without parenting, on your own. Without the chance of experimenting that uncontional love every kid had the need to feel, nor feeling looked after.

That didn't justify the crimes he committed but that surely made it more undestable.

"You're great." The officer exclaimed before he hurried to exist the office and get to his work.

Demon and Skylar could have a common traumatic past, the loss of their parents. When a person experiences something that traumatic there are two possible answers to cope with the traumas. One is to make others do the same things they did to you. To throw on them what you experience, including sufference and pain. The path Demon probably took. Whereas the second path, Skylar took was to work on her trauma and get all the best she could get from it. To use the traumatic experience positively and turn it into good for both herself and for other people, because she knew she couldnt change her past but contrary she could change her future and make of her experience something that could be useful and helpful to others.

However, she didn't blame Demon for chosing the wrong path, she knew him well, and the sufference they both experience was like a scar people never heal from.

Despite the contrasting feelings she felt for him and for the traumatic sad past he probably had she could not let that feeling get in the middle of what her mission was. She had to lock him in prison, his crimes may be the result of a tragic past but those couldn't be unpaid. He had to pay fpr what he did.

Skylar closed the dossier and started to write down the brief dialogue she shared with Demon, her plan was meticulously studied to be successful. The last testimony she had, was Charlotte's. who agreed with Skylar to provide the FBI with all the information she knew to get Demon arrested.

Charlotte told Skylar what were Demon's hobbies, his weakness, and the few collaborators she had met. She provided Skylar more information in one section of one hour interview rather than the whole police crew had provided in the entire year.

The reason why Charlotte did that? Purely for revenge, revenge only. And love, she was desperately in love with a man who could not return her love, not because he didn't want to but because he was cursed by faith and by a troubled past.

Charlotte loved him, and tried her best to conquer his heart, she even moved away from her family, she changed her habits, her passions, she argued with her friends and revolved her life completely around and for what?

For getting an "I'm sorry Charlotte, I wish I could feel what you humans feel but I can't. The only thing that make my heart beat is seeing the blood flowing out of my victims' bodies. That's all." after she gave him her heart without asking anything in return. She just wished he could handle it with care and protect it for the rest of his life but instead, he threw it to the floor emotionless and cruedely just like him could do.

At that point, whenever she looked at him she could notice how empty he was, like a desert, naked to the sun, and the spell broke to reveal what he truly was.

However, that description wasn't what shocked Skylar that much, what truly shocked her and surprised her was what came after. Those words echoed in her mind and provoked her goosebumps making her shiver in fright and confusion.

"I will show your real me, he told me, and one second later he had turned into the wickest scaring creature ever existed. Skylar, trust me, when I tell you this, I had seen many scary creatures but none of those were like him. I could see his eyes had turned into red flaming scaring eyes , his lips were weirdly pale, two enormous dark wings grew upon his shoulders. The name Demon describes him better than any other name could do, the devil himself was standing right in front of me."
