Chapter 4 - Chapter Four - Hidden information

A giggle could be seen through the reflection of the glass from where Demon was sipping, then he switched back to his serious expression when he noticed Skylar was looking at him.

"Miss Madisyn, you shall moderate your requests and your tones if you're going to stay here any longer or I am afraid your permanency here won't be much longer."

Skylar rolled her voice, "Stop threatening me and help me to get a job."

Silence. The glass lifted enough to let Skylar get a glimpse of those deep eyes but only for a fraction of an instant. All that she was able to perceive was that he had blue eyes, that particular blue remind her of the waves of the sea in the middle of a storm. At that point, she wondered what storm was he fighting against and if that deep dark blue will ever turn lighter like the pacific waves of the ocean on an early summer morning.

"Why would I help you? You can't give me anything in return. And you should know I only give when I get something in return."

"Because you killed my cousin. What kind of man kills the cousin of his ex-girlfriend?"

"I get called Demon for a reason. I am not a man, therefore I'd be able to feel emotions and empathy but I don't. You had enough of my time today. Go."

He placed the glass down and clicked it twice on the table, at that sign three of the men inside bumped in and took me under my arm kinda abruptly as they pulled me out.

Skylar didn't even try to rebel against that, because she knew that rebelling against his words was useless, especially if he had an army of fifteen men by his side. And also if he was the most wanted criminal and mafia man of the whole country.

She experienced one sensation she never felt before in her career. She felt little compared to him. As if her experience wasn't enough to catch him. She felt disturbed, anxious and scared. But at the same time she was vibrating for the excitement. His words got impressed her mind "unable to feel emotions and empathy." was that even possible? How could not a human-being feel? However, that would explain the hundreds of rivals he had killed just because they mistakenly interlaced his path.

What kind of person would let behind his shoulders thousands of victims without showing a sign of guilt or regret? Only someone who wouldn't be able to be emphatic. Now all was clear for FL, she just concluded the puzzle fitting the last piece in and the whole picture formed.

He was a psychopath, the worst kind, someone unable to love, feel, smile and live. Someone who had been marked forever. Deep down, she felt a bit connected to him. They probably had something in common as he probably must have experienced something so traumatic about his childhood to make him turn into the worst beast that ever existed -or a better demon.

The wave of men walked back inside leaving her alone outside, with no answers, but full of doubts. She didn't get to see his real identity, she didn't get to know his name nor who he was or any kind of confession.

Yet, she felt something in that room, something that awaken her curiosity, something that screamed to her she was close, closer than she thought. She just didn't know it yet.

When she came back to her office, the officer walked inside, "did you find something new?" he was begging with his hands placed together for answers, for any piece of information that may be very close to catching him.

If they found the name they could easily find the crimes, the motive, the weapons that were illegally stolen, and all the collaborators who helped him. The demon knew it, he knew all they needed was something to lock him in the gate forever and that was the reason why his identity and his entire life were a mystery to all except the ones he worked with.

Legends even said calling him Demon was underestimated compared to what he truly was, so they called him Devil, others call him murder, and some rumored he was a supernatural creature. So many names and theories for one only person, so many secrets for one only truth.

Would she be able to find the truth and get close to him enough to deserve his trust?

"No. I have nothing. Less than before if possible. I need his dossier."

"But there's nothing written there, I read it thousands of times." The officer answered, he placed his hand on his head and shook it.

"Please get it and bring it to me," Skylar asked with an insisting tone of voice, maybe she read all the information in the dossier wrong. Maybe there was something she didn't see.

He left just to come back a few instants later with the latest block of papers stapled together, that's all they had on Demon. Just a dozen of papers filled with the latest information they could deduce from the cases linked to him. No evidence, no faux pas, nothing else.

She opened it and started to read it, each word echoed in her mind as a familiar sound she heard already, bringing her back to her past and now things started to make sense.

Why she didn't notice earlier? Something so easy and decipherable, standing right under her nose but she couldn't see it. Now that she heard it from him, she had an epiphany and put two and two together.

She closed the dossier and lifted her head, proudly, and with a huge smile on her thin lips, she stared at the officer who frowned his eyes confused. He had read that dossier too many times to even doubt it could be useful for the investigations. But instead, he couldn't be wronger. An expert agent like him missed one fundamental piece of information that could eventually drive them to the truth. A smile is vivid on her face. Her lips closed together and she nodded as she exclaimed, "I have something."
