"You should stop bullying the new students like that every single year, Galvin." The woman said as she stepped onto the podium. She was a middle-aged woman in her forties, and the uniform she was wearing was even more decorated with medals than even uniform Galvin wore.
Galvin saluted immediately as the woman walked past him. "My apologies Madam Freya, but I was only teaching them some manners." He immediately explained himself.
"You always give the same excuse every year, Galvin." Freya retorted with a small frown on her face.
She smiled at the students on the field who were just recovering from the previous prank they had all experienced. "I'm sorry about what you all just went through, but my colleague here is unable to control his excitement sometimes, but he meant no harm. It's just his way of expressing how glad he is to have you all here." Freya apologized before she continued to speak through the microphone to all the students.
"My name is Freya Hartwell and I'm the Dean of this academy. First of all I would love to congratulate you on the success of your admission to this prestigious academy. However, this is where the true journey begins for you all. You all have to put in an enormous amount of effort and hardwork to continue excelling in this academy." Freya paused for a few seconds to see if she had the full attention of all the students and she was glad to see that they were all focused on her before continuing her speech.
"Before now you all must have heard about the story of the Evolution War. Twenty years ago the face of the earth changed when its core suddenly became unstable. This caused it to release a strange type of energy that is now known as mana. As a result, the earth's course of evolution began by giving humans special abilities and also mutating some animals and plants. This led to a brutal battle to determine the hierarchy of power and dominance. Our cities were overrun by this beast, and countless lives were lost. However, thanks to the sacrifice of many great heroes that fought bravely, we are still able to retake back our cities from this beast and chase them out but the war is not over yet which is why many academies were established around the world to train young psykers like you all that have awakened your powers to protect our home. All of you are the future and we expect you to show dedication and commitment towards your training."
"The academy is proud to be among the world's premier schools with many B - rank, a few prominent A - rank and four famous S - rank psykers that are now considered celebrities and rankers in the world today. You have an opportunity to be included on this list as well, but you must work hard and put all your efforts into achieving this level of recognition. Listen to your instructors well, train hard and study diligently. Those are the only things I would like to tell you for now. The vice-dean Galvin here will provide you all with the rest of the details, so I shall take my leave now." Dean Freya smiled once more as she walked away from the podium and was escorted from the field by her security squad.
As the dean made her speech all the students and faculty members were in total silence and as she left all the students were going looking at her in awe until her figure was no longer visible as she walked away.
I can't believe I've just seen Colonel Freya, one of my favorite idols. Isn't she amazing?" a boy said directly to Miles as he stretched his neck to get a better view.
Miles glanced at him, then ignored him as he became uninterested in responding to the boy.
"I heard that she is an A - rank psyker which is really a remarkable achievement for a Dean. In other academies, most Deans are B rank psykers and I think she would be better suited for the role of guild leader instead of Dean." The boy said without looking at Miles since he was still viewing the fading figure of the Dean.
Miles continued to ignore the boy. However, he was intrigued by what he just said about Dean Freya being an A-rank Psyker. Miles found it weird because he could sense the aura of an S-rank emanating from Freya. "Seems like you know how to keep a secret." Miles thought in his mind
When he got tired of stretching his neck the boy finally shifted his gaze to Miles and stretched out his hands. " Sorry I was engrossed in having a better view that I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Kevin Heath." He introduced himself while stretching his hand out towards Miles for a handshake.
With his usual blank expression, Miles grabbed Kevin's hands in order to avoid being rude. "Miles Reed." Miles also introduced himself.
Kevin was about to continue the conversation when Galvin spoke into the microphone again.
"Alright you twerps, I don't have time to babysit you all so let's get straight to the point. I'm just going to explain a few key facts you all need to know. Let's talk about the bracelets on your wrist. Firstly, they display your innate battle power level which would either increase, decrease or stay the same depending on how hard you train yourself and just so you know your power level would determine the rank assigned to you when you graduate from this academy. Secondly, they also display the amount of points you possess and they are just as important as your power levels and in case you were all wondering what's so great about these points, don't worry you would soon discover the mystery behind them but I can tell you that while your power level determines your future rank then the points determine your rank within the academy." Galvin smirked when he said the last part.
"Points shall be awarded to you by your instructors when you successfully perform some special task assigned to you. You can also gain points during general tests conducted by the academy. Thirdly, the most thrilling way to also win points is by challenging another student while betting certain amounts of points against your opponent. I suggest that you all forget all the comfort you have enjoyed in the past until you all graduate in two years. As you have been assigned a room number through your brackets, all misconduct must be reported to any academy official with solid evidence, and lastly killing is not allowed at the academy" Galvin explained with a tired expression.
"Lastly, leaving the academy premises without official authorization and incase you think that you're smart enough. There is a tracker on your bracelet, don't even try to forcefully take it off because it will only trigger the alarm code installed in the bracelets."
Miles sneered after he heard the last part of the speech, it proved that this place was no less than a battle field and only the strong would be able to survive. He was simply encouraging any behaviour except killing but also warning them not to get caught and it looked like Miles wasn't the only one that got the message as he could already see many faces with malicious smiles already.
Psykers were competitive in nature, especially the younger generation who were obsessed with dominating those who were weaker than them. Miles could sense the animosity among the students already as they had already started placing targets on the backs of one another.
"That's all you twerps need to know. You may all retire to your dorms for now and unpack because your training begins tomorrow when your instructors blow their whistle." Galvin concluded his speech and also left the podium.
"What's your dorm number Miles?" Kevin asked.
Miles checked his bracelet before replying. "I have been placed in room twelve in dorm five."
"I was hoping we'd be in the same dorm. I got put in room seven in dorm two. "Don't hesitate to visit me whenever you want, or maybe I should come visit you," Kevin enthusiastically suggested.
"Sure, if that pleases you, but definitely not today. I think you need to go look for your dorm room." Miles agreed and picked up his bag to also leave in search of his dorm just like every other student at the moment.
" Okay, I'll see you later," Kevin waved to Miles.
"He seems like a nice guy, I hope he can survive in this jungle filled with predators."It feels more stupid than brave to attend an academy like this but I'm sure this will be a lot of fun than I expected," Miles thought as he walked away.
Although the academy was large nonetheless it was easy for all the students to find their dorms quickly because of the map installed inside their bracelets.
