Sapphire
I was so tired as I walked back home. It was already close to 6:00am and I had work tomorrow. Have to make it back and get at least one or two hours of rest. Note that I said rest not sleep, cause if I slept I would probably wake up at 2pm in the afternoon. And Sir Martins will have my head for that and demote me to being a rookie officer.
As I was walking on the pedestrian walkway, I heard the police's siren and subtly turned around to see the car stopping a little distance away from me. The doors opened to reveal a tall stocky man that looked to be in his early 50's, to fit the police typical stereotype, he even had the moustache to match. . I continued walking pretending not to know that the car stopped.
"Ma'am, please excuse us." The older stocky looking cop called out as he walked towards her. Shit he would probably be asking what she was still doing out early this time in the day. She turned around feigning surprise that she didn't hear them and playing it cool to avoid any suspicions.
His partner must have come out too because they were two now. He was younger and obviously a rookie at least from his looks. He still had that fresh look and innocence about him, I just hoped that it wasn't soiled in his with the force.
"Yes Officer you called." I spoke acting all dainty and innocent waiting impatiently for him and his partner to reach me. I noticed that he had an unsteady gait to his walk.
"Yes Ma'am, I didn't think you heard the sound of the car when we stopped." He stopped in front of me as he hooked his thumbs through the belt loops of his trousers. While his partner just stood beside him silent and watching like a hawk.
"No, sorry was listening to music." I pointed to the airpods, one stuck in my left ear and the other in my right hand. He took my explanation extremely well, which was believable but not true. As a supernatural,my hearing senses were enhanced and I could hear from a very far distance but he didn't know that. A little lie won't hurt, would it?
"Ma'am that is not safe especially early this morning." He admonished me with disapproval on his face and voice.
"I see you were jogging before we interrupted?" His partner finally spoke, his voice was a smooth tenor which held a bit of melody that vibrated through me.
I narrowed my eyes, that feeling felt like ... I gasped inwardly in shock, the dude was trying to shimmer me. He was a siren and I bet he knew that but too bad for him that I was part siren and that wouldn't work on me. Male sirens were very scarce in the paranormal world, either they were born with no powers or little of it. Just few like 1% of the population were lucky to give birth to powerful male sirens. And this one was weak in shimmering which I was not.
The waves coming from his voice were slowly trying to warm their way through my mental defenses. He was trying to coerce me to answer their questions. Nice try, I was going to play with him before I shocked the hell out of him.
"Yes Officer, I jog and take walks early in the morning to clear my mind." I told him as I let and felt him slipping further into my mind. His telepresence felt like gentle fingers which were filling around my mind and I held it all together not to give away any reaction. I couldn't wait for him to find my dangerous surprise.
"Me too, My name is Sergeant Gabriel Notch, but my friends call me Gabe. And my partner here* .. to which he signalled at.. "is Officer Josh Wells." I nodded at the introduction and his partner who returned it.
"We work under the Port of The Seattle Police Department." I nodded at that piece of irrelevant information since it obvious they were cops.
"Wow this is a coincidence, I work there too as as detective under the Criminal Investigation Division (CID)." I exclaimed
"What a small world!" Gabriel exclaimed and we chattered on with me truly interested in the conversation.
"Ma'am what's the name?" Typical older cop asked me as he looked at me in sympathy after listening to my tales of overworking myself.
"Name is Sapphire Stone." I replied with a small smile as I felt Josh slip fully inside and was feeling around the surface of my mind probing for information that would give an insight on me. Not that he would find anything there, since I held full control of my mind and guided it like a fortress. I pretended as if I wasn't feeling anything and that everything was normal.
As I continued chatting with Sergeant Gabriel, I felt Josh slip further wanting to enter the first layer of my mind and met a very big wall guarding it. I smiled inwardly when I felt and saw his surprise with the way his eyes widened in shock and that when I acted. I dropped a thick mental block with force behind his telepresence in my mind blocking his entry and escape. I felt him tapping against the mental block that I dropped and when it didn't lift or shatter like he expected.
He started panicking by bashing, pushing and striking against the wall with his mental strength. I could see the sweat now beading on his forehead and the strain on his face. That was when Sergeant Gabriel turned asking Josh a question.
"Right Josh?"
"Yeah." Josh looked at him as he answered with a strain in his voice, even I had lost trail of the conversation since I was intent on teaching Josh a big lesson.
"Are you alright son? You haven't been participating in the conversation the whole time we have been speaking." Sergeant Gabriel walked over to Josh touching him on the shoulder.
Meanwhile, Josh was still striking and pushing at my mental block. And I was tired of his baby strikes since they felt like tickles in my mind. This guy was really a rookie both in his job and paranormal ability, now to stun him. I lashed at his telepresence with a hard blow.
He shrieked out loud like a person possessed by a demon causing Sergeant Gabriel to jump away in shock. Yeah that's right, you messed with the wrong person. The Stone family came from a long line of powerful mind benders. And I was a hell of a good one.
"Josh what's wrong?" He asked panicked seeing Josh clutch his hands to the sides of his head tight.
"My he... head hurts so bad." He complained as he squeezed his eyes tight shut and stumbled backwards falling on his butt.
I went over to them feigning concern over Josh's predicament.
"Josh what's going on?" I asked as I squatted down along side Sergeant Gabriel.
"What don't you bring water?" I suggested to Officer Gabriel as I rubbed my hand down Josh's back.
"Yeah, that sounds good. As Sergeant Gabriel walked towards the car, I leaned in and whispered along the sides of his ear.
"That should teach you just fine, not to infiltrate yourself in people's mind." I hated shimmering people not because I couldn't but because I found it to be morally decadent and wrong.
"Yes." He agreed in a small voice and I knew he was mentally spent. He was properly wondering how I did that. I lifted the mental block and allowed his telepresence to leave. If I had struck harder, Officer Josh would have either died or turned to mental noodles like an imbecile. Mind benders were deadly killers and mostly feared in the paranormal society.
Officer Gabriel returned with a bottle of water and held it up to Josh's mouth to drink. After taking a few sips, Josh looked refreshed and his skin had reserved back some of its colour.
"How are you feeling kid?" Sergeant Gabriel asked Josh, face still creased on concern.
"Feeling better." He murmured.
"What happened back here?" He questioned further after leading Josh to the passenger seat of the police vehicle.
"Must be stress or acute headache. I'll personally suggest therapy." I put in and Sergeant Gabriel nodded as if that explained it all.
"Thank you madam for your time, we appreciate it." I nodded in acknowledgement of 'his thank you '.
"No problem, gotta go."
I turned to go, thinking of continuing my walk back home and thoughts or little sleep since it was already to seven.
"Ma'am, would you mind if we gave you a lift?" Sergeant Gabriel echoed from behind me.
"Definitely not." Finally things were looking a little yo for me, at least I would get a little rest before going to work.
