Grace had been searching for Nathaniel since Rose had been carried away from the river. She finally spotted him walking away from the crowd, a few feet away from the tents. Grace took a deep breath and approached him.
"Excuse me, Nathaniel," she said, as he turned around to face her. "I just wanted to thank you for saving Rose. You were incredibly brave."
Nathaniel's eyes flickered up to meet hers, and Grace could see the discomfort and unease in them. "It was nothing," he mumbled, shuffling his feet. "Anyone would have done the same."
But Grace could see that Nathaniel was not in great shape himself. She noticed an injury on his arm.
"Wait," she said, reaching out to touch Nathaniel's arm. "What happened here? Are you hurt?"
