Chapter 13 - Just survive

▪︎ It's easier to break one stick than to break a thousand ▪︎

Devlin was walking a distance away from Marcus, and their journey so far had just been very awkward.

Marcus didn't initiate any conversation, so Devlin just kept silent and focused on the road ahead.

'I don't remember Cerevauz is on this route..' Devlin thought, seeing they were walking on the route to Datsoco instead, 'Does he even know the way?'

Marcus had different thoughts as they kept walking, 'There's enough buildings from here to base, they don't have enough patience to keep waiting so long..'

Devlin was dragging his feet at this point from boredom, while Marcus was putting on his helmet.

"Isn't it hot in that?" Devlin realised he didn't mean to say them out.

"No, it's not." Marcus simply replied as he took out something from his pocket.

He opened his hands to look at the four small balls in his hands and pretended to accidentally drop them.

Devlin wasn't paying attention and just kept staring at the sky that was getting brighter.

The balls that dropped on the ground had a small buzz before four small legs spread out. A small light glows in the camera, linking to Marcus's system.

Two of them had legs going back in, while the other two slowly moved.

After a while, a few figures passed the area where Devlin and Marcus walked past.

The two balls that were there send an alert followed by live footage back to Marcus, "Do you have any weapons to defend yourself?" He faced Devlin.

Devlin wanted to use the plasma glove blade but shook his head in response.

"You ain't normal for surviving so long, so I trust you can defend yourself." He shrugged, leaving Devlin speechless

"Wait what? We are gonna get attacked?" Devlin asked as his eyes darted around.

Marcus smirked despite Devlin not being able to see, "My brother is jealous I'm smart."

"And why am I involved?" Devlin questioned, "Can't you defend me?"

Marcus shrugged, "I still don't trust you enough." He simply answered and kept quiet again.

Devlin tried asking a bunch of questions bout how he knows and tried getting any answers from him. However, Marcus just kept quiet like he couldn't hear at all.

Devlin just sighed and kept his eyes on the road.

On Marcus's system, his two gadgets followed the assassins from a distance. One of them had already scanned and given him the basic gear information they had, leaving him a little annoyed.

'Did Sky promise them so much money?' He was about to keep thinking when he received an alert from his helmet

He quickly dodged the bullet from behind him and turned while pulling an arm up, a small laser beam shot from his glove towards the assailant.

The assailant was quick to dodge too and quickly leapt away, leaving what looked like shadow particles.

Devlin only saw Marcus suddenly turn and point his fist up, 'What the?'

"We're under attack." Marcus answered Devlin's thoughts, "Don't die kid."

'What kid am I?! I've lived-' Before Devlin could finish his thoughts, he was kicked away by Marcus as a laser beam shot where Devlin stood a second ago. Hitting Marcus's pants, leaving a scorch mark.

"Focus," Marcus ordered, staring at where the assailant was a minute ago.

'Don't you have a shield or something?!' Devlin screamed in his mind, catching on that Marcus could read his mind.

"Can you use a yo-yo?" Marcus asked while scanning the roofs of the buildings around them.

Devlin tried recalling if he ever played it before, 'I do!'

Marcus nodded and pressed the side of his bag, something shot out and caught it, "Use this then."

He threw it towards Devlin, who caught the yo-yo and immediately tried finding the rope.

He hooked it around his finger and threw it on the ground, getting a feel for the yo-yo.

'I'm not sure if I can use it properly..' He thought as he caught the yo-yo in his palm again.

"Just surviving is all you need, oh right connect it to your system too." Marcus quickly threw his bag towards Devlin, pushing him away from another attack.

Devlin fell and hit the ground, "Agh!" He groaned, pushing the bag away and standing up.

Marcus closed his eyes, grinding his teeth as he tried to detect the thoughts around him.

'They know my limits..' He quickly opened his eyes again and glanced at Devlin who was spinning the yo-yo.

His hand tightened in a fist as he closed his eyes again.

Everything was quiet around them, until.

'Distract them till a monster comes..' He heard a thought, causing him to feel light-headed for a moment.

Marcus shook his head and dashed forward to the building the assailant was at.

The sole of his boots and the palm of his glove glowed white. He jumped up and stuck and slid on the wall. Jumping every chance he could, reaching the top in almost no time.

'What's up bitch!' Marcus glove had already warmed up and shot the laser in the assailant's head.

When the body fell, he was already on the other side of the edge and saw a large monster coming their way.

Pressing his lips together, he frowned at the sight.

'They want to frame it as an accident..and if I were to fight them near the wall, they will frame me as a murderer.. this is so frustrating..'

He felt like punching something and settled with stomping the ground. He quickly slid down and told Devlin the situation.

"Don't you have something to kill that monster?" Devlin asked, "You can build things right?"

Marcus pondered, and quickly went to his bag and looked inside.

"Pass me the yo-yo." Marcus requested, which Devlin obliged and tossed him the yo-yo.

Elvie who had been quiet with his thoughts by mumbling out loud realised what Marcus was about to do, 'Damn..'

Marcus heard Elvie think and had a small smirk on his face.

"We're about to replicate the first failure on compressing energy." He faced Devlin, "Have you learned about it?"

Devlin tried recalling that history, as Marcus focused on taking out whatever tools there were and laying them out.

Devlin's eyes widened in shock, and Marcus could hear his thoughts loudly. He stared at Marcus like he was crazy, and his thoughts only widened Marcus's smirk.
