Chapter 35 - Leaving the Family: A Mission to Join the Enemy

"Boss is not going to be happy about this," Naru said as she walked with Isola through the Zaraki Manor.

"That hardly matters in this situation. The Numerian is up to something with the Bloods, and Stephen needs to know about this," Isola replied, and Naru sighed but then smiled.

"Have you heard anything about what he looks like? Is he handsome?" She asked, but Isola rolled her eyes as they got closer to Stephen Zaraki's office.

"He is a Numerian, not human. That would be like asking if a metal sculpture is attractive," Isola said, but Naru pushed her playfully.

"You know the legends as well as I do about them! You know they can take human forms and even breed with us! You can't tell me that doesn't interest you?! Think about it! We build our lives on doing things that other people in society say are wrong, and try to stop us, so imagine being able to bring a child that was illegally conceived into the world?! That would be the highest point in our defiance of those that decided that they could tell us what to do!" Naru laughed, and the two stopped outside the boss's door, and Isola turned to her.

"You are a killer, and I manipulate people. Those are our jobs, not creating offspring. What would you do with the child? Who would raise it? Do you really think that these are things you should be focusing on?" Isola demanded, and Naru giggled.

"This is a job, and one day, I will not be as good at it, or I will die. You and I both know that this is how it will go, so why shouldn't I worry about the future?" Naru asked, and Isola growled.

"Because he is our rival, and you shouldn't be thinking those kinds of thoughts, considering what we are going to," Isola started to say, but the doors to Boss Zaraki's office opened on their own, making her cut off her words.

"What are my two favorite ladies talking about?" Stephen Zaraki asked and then took a long pull from this tobacco pipe.

Naru smiled and skipped into the room to take a seat in the corner of Stephen's desk. "The Numerian. You saw him, right? What was he like?" She asked, but Isola clicked her tongue.

"We came here to report about the Numerian, not to ask questions about it!" She snapped, but Boss Zaraki put his hand up to stop her.

"Razor is meeting with Brad and squeezing them for names of the others. I already know this, and there isn't much to do about it. Yet," he said and then looked at Naru. "I can say that you would like him, but I suggest that you stay more than clear of him. From what I saw, he is no joke and doesn't mind killing people to get what he wants. Three Bloods are dead from trying to just enter a building that he was in, along with a few Rats."

"And you are just letting him do what he wants?!" Isola exclaimed, but Stephen leaned back, putting his hands behind his head as he did with a sigh.

"You didn't meet this guy. He has no chill, and he had me back to back with that witch, Alizra. Very few times can I count that I was too flustered to cast magic, but this creature put me in two positions where I was actually worried and didn't retaliate," Stephen explained, and Isola slowly sat down as Naru let out a low whistle.

"You make this guy out to be a monster, but you can be serious that you were actually concerned?!" Isola asked, and Stephen shrugged.

"That was the thing. Part of me told me that I could take him. There were three of us, the biggest and strongest in the city, but in that room, Keith, myself, and Alizra all froze up. There was even a point where Razor had a blade to Keith's neck using a strange metallic bug guard that burst out of a wall. The entire experience was one I will not soon forget," Stephen explained, and Naru made a purring noise as she smiled with her eyes closed.

"Oh, you can't be serious!" Isola complained as she looked at her friend as she opened her eyes back up, still smiling, but she ignored Isola and turned to her boss.

"So, you don't want to poke the Hydra, so to speak, because you don't know what he is capable of?" Naru asked, and Isola started to protest, but Naru turned back with a deadly glare at her friend. "What I want, I will have, or no one will, and this... Razor... even the name elicits fear! I have decided, and if you stand in my way-" Naru started to threaten, but Zaraki cut her off.

"Kilna of the Manta family has taken a position with Razor, so I can't see Keith waiting to do the same. While I don't want to test him, I still can't leave him to do whatever he wants. Keith Kaido and I run the two gangs to keep the peace, but the main point is for them to stop the other gangs that pop up. With Razor's interference, it is clear to see what one of his future goals will be, which will be taking the gangs from us," Stephen explained.

"So you want me to go and offer my services and become a spy?" Naru almost purred as her good mood returned in a flash as she turned to her boss.

"No. I want you to leave my service and go to work solely for him, just like Kilna," He replied, but Naru frowned at this.

Stephen had raised her from a young age after her parents had been killed in the war twenty years ago when Aquaking forced all nations to attack the country Numenor. Far more humans had died than the total number of Numerians that had melted down when it was all said and done. Boss Zaraki had been much younger at the time, but he had collected and bought many skilled children and then trained them all to work for him.

Hearing Stephen tell her that she would be leaving the family was a shock, even though this was something that she had always privately dreamed of but never even told Isola, her closest friend.

"You want me to leave the family? What is the point of sending me over, then? How is this going to help you?" Naru asked.
