Chapter 41 - The Showdown Begins: Taking Back the Night

As I left the room, my determination and rage boiled within me. I had a plan in mind, but it was going to take some serious effort to put it into motion. These criminals were using innocent children as their weapons, and that simply would not stand. It was time for them to pay for their crimes.

I powered up my core systems, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead. This mission was clear: find out who was behind these Numerian artifacts and make sure that they were held accountable. My emotions were of no consequence - all that mattered was ensuring justice was served. I had to be ruthless and unyielding, determined to do whatever it took to protect this city and its people.

They were the sheep that lived in the light right now, but it was such a waste. Only the criminals came out at night, and even then, the guards were praying on people. This was not good for night business, and I was going to change that. This world was much worse off than my old world, but the level of corruption wasn't far off.

"What do you want me to do?" Miles asked as he stopped at his door, the black knight as well close behind him.

I stopped and turned to him. "Instruct the black knight on what you are doing to make money and if you own any business. I would like to get a list of all businesses in the city as well, along with a list of goods going in and out of the city. Do you think that you can acquire that information? Or can you find people that can?" I asked, and Miles thought for a moment before replying.

"I can get some of the information from my contacts, but I think that the list of goods may be harder to come across," he explained, and I nodded in agreement.

"Very well, then spend your time gathering these resources. I only have about two hours before I need to meet, and I need to prepare. I will be locking the main warehouse while I am gone, and everyone is to stay out of the area," I said, and then without another word, I left for the warehouse.

Once there, I got to work. The first thing that I needed was to create more bug guards, but this time I was going to have to make them differently. I had 100 grams of platinum left, but I wasn't sure if that would be enough to increase my total, so I had to be smart about this. The Mindless were not zombies, instead more like trained killers that were completely loyal according to the information that Fawna had input. That meant that they would attack the moment they made contact, but there was nothing to suggest how they would fight or if they favored one type of magic over another. This was troublesome, but it just meant that I would have to get them before they got me.

All of this was just adding to the complications, and it was starting to feel less like a job and more like a test. The problem was figuring out what to do to succeed?

I wanted to make sure that I could, for one, protect the people I was guarding. That might not be as important since the Manta was being used to play me into this trap, and they must have offered her something like free passage. The thing about that was nothing was holding them to that deal, and Ned and his Order would care about Alizra or the deal, so I would still have to watch them.

The next thing was the Mindless. Even putting my own qualms about using children aside, these people were extremely dangerous, and it was clear that Kaido had picked his side in all of this. A betrayal from Alizra was almost expected, and it was going to happen sooner or later, but Kaido was more than likely doing this as retaliation for our first meeting. That was why capturing the Mindless was so important; it was a crucial part of defanging King Kaido and his pretend empire.

The last thing that I wanted to come from this to make it truly successful was to kill, seriously wound, or maim Thomas. The other Order members that were already bugged would be dead when I commanded it, so I wasn't concerned about them, just the Mindless. Thomas was going to be my greatest challenge, but this was essential. I had to send a message to Ned, and it needed to be one that would be heard loud and clear.

Your days are numbered in single digits.

I started to create holding cells but closed them off with glass that kept a few of my Nanobots to repair if any damage was done from the inside with magic. They would also scan the magic and symbols if they used any, in turn updating my own Magical Language Model or MLM.

As I did, I let my mind wander back to where things began for me in this world. This was my third day, and now I was getting ready to take one-third of the criminal element of the city. I had known this would come, but because of my body and the rate at that information travels in this city, things were moving much faster than I could have first anticipated.

Kyla was to be killed, but now she was a part of the team with the other 5, including Kilna, who was an agent for Alizra Manta. I had learned more about her, but there was something I was still missing, the reason why Boss Zaraki scooped her up. There was some information about Stephen Zaraki making his fortune at the end of the last major war, but he had also scooped up and raised each of his members from a young age. This was acceptable back then, but if Stephen wanted to stay in the city, raising criminals was no longer going to become an option for anyone.

Once the cells were created, I got to work on the robots and gave them my full concentration. They were going to have different jobs, but they were solely for capturing the Mindless, using as little force as possible.
