Luis set two plates of the same meal I had enjoyed inside the dining hall. He bowed at the woman who turned out to be my aunt and me.
“Thank you, Luis,” she smiled genuinely.
“It’s my pleasure to serve this family. Welcome back, Miss Maurice. Enjoy your meal.”
He left the kitchen, his footsteps light as a feather.
Aunt Maurice turned to me, reaching for my hands as we sat across each other. Her eyes sparked pure joy, something I wasn’t used to.
Besides my father and Luis, she was the third person who seemed genuinely happy to meet me.
“I thought your father had finally lost it when he sent a message about you. I came here to check on him. My sister’s dying wish was to ensure your father doesn’t lose his sanity and for you to grow up happy.”
There were tears in her eyes again. She had sobbed a little while she was hugging me earlier.
