Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Discovering Roots

"Wrong room." Josh shut the door as soon as he opened it. He had accidentally barged into his aunt and one of her numerous boyfriends in a compromising position.

"And I just wanted to eat some chicken, couldn't they just do it in her room or something?" Josh sighed, walking to his room.

He had become accustomed to his aunt and her escapades with her numerous boyfriends. He sometimes wondered if she was chasing the men or the men chased her. The former would be a suitable answer, as quite a number of the men had disturbing kinks that would leave her with injuries.

"Maybe she likes the pain." Josh shrugged, he didn't believe that a normal person would like being used like an object, but who was he to judge? Some people were just wired differently.

"Now I'll have to feed on my spit." Josh sighed.

Josh entered his room and just lay there thinking. He thought about Danny; how he made his life better and the beautiful memories they shared. Their relationship was definitely not one of a student-teacher but a father-son relationship.

Josh grew up without any parents. His mother died during childbirth, and from the stories, his aunt told him, his father was an alcoholic. He died in a pub fight.

Now, he was stuck with his whore of an aunt. How else would a woman who to his knowledge had no job or was she running any business, be able to foot her bills and some of his at the same time? It's no wonder she had many male partners at the same time.

"Talk about proper upbringing." Josh chuckled bitterly.

All his life he had never had your usual family upbringing nor did he ever enjoy the privilege of parental love, care and affection. His aunt Maggie just never had the time for him. All she did was provide for his basic needs and that was it. He could do drugs right under her roof and until the telltale signs started showing she wouldn't notice.

Josh often wondered why he was so unlucky, for years he suffered from depression, social anxiety and often had suicidal tendencies.

He had made flimsy attempts to try to end his life. Not having the courage to end his life. The attempt that was closest to success, was when he took a full bottle of liquid insecticide.

This attempt was made when he got brutally rejected by his crush and was made fun of by almost the entire class. He had never felt as much pain and self-loathing as he did at that time, and he decided it was better to just end it all and maybe start afresh like in reincarnation novels, who knows he might be reincarnated into the body of an immortal dual cultivator and live 'the life'.

Josh laughed hard at his childish thoughts.

When he woke up at the hospital he realised just how much he valued his life, and although his aunt never showed it, she still had a bit of love for him.

Most of the positive values he had today were taught by Danny, but that didn't mean that he hated his aunt, she was family after all. You can't choose family.

Josh decided to do something trivial to get off his thoughts. He scrolled through his phone checking out the pictures of his classmates on social media.

Josh came across a picture of a pretty girl in his class and couldn't help but voice out his frustration, "Her butt isn't that big, that has to be filter." Truly, technology had its disadvantages.

Josh heard the front door open and close. His aunt's boyfriend must have left.

"I'm starving." Josh touched his rumbling stomach.

He walked to the kitchen and saw that his aunt was just getting dressed.

"I know I'm sexy, but it's inappropriate to stare at your aunt you know?" Maggie narrowed her eyes at Josh.

"Sorry." Josh quickly turned around.

"Sexy my arse." Josh muttered under his breath.

Although his aunt was beautiful and had a great body, it was not enough to get a high-value man like himself attracted. Despite his pretty face and amazing build he had never gotten any girls, what he did get was stares. Stares from girls licking their lips when ogling his well-chiselled arms and stares from guys who were just jealous of his looks.

No girl would want to date a trash un-awakened like him. That would soon change.

"You can turn around now." Maggie announced.

"There's your usual; chicken, rice and broccoli in the fridge, just microwave it." Maggie instructed.

"Where are you going?" Josh asked as he noticed that she was in a hurry.

"I'm going to take a bath, I'm going to a party later." Maggie replied, leaving the kitchen.

"Alright then." Josh shrugged, it was not like he cared much about her activities.

Josh proceeded to microwave his food and sat down to eat, thinking about something that bothered him. His race.

When he first got the system notification he noticed that his race was 'Half-vampire', at that time, he shrugged it off and assumed the system was high on crack or something.

Now that he checked again, his race was still the same. This begged the question, 'how and why was his race difference from what he knew'. His aunt was not a vampire so the assumption that her sister was a vampire was out of the question. That left the second possibility, his father was a vampire.

There was also another possibility, the system changed his race. This was slightly less feasible than the others, as he had not experienced any changes in body structure, he was just the same as before.

"Imagine I got enhanced, I would have like zero body fat!" Josh chuckled.

"Ah, my biology is still as weak as ever. Humans can't live with less the two per cent body fat." Josh reminded himself.

His aunt appeared in the living room, dressed? For the party.

"Maggie, wait a minute." Josh halted her.

"What?" Maggie turned around to face her nephew.

"I have something to tell you, I think you need to sit down so we have this conversation." Josh replied.

"Just don't waste my time on some nonsense or I'm going to kill you." Maggie warned, walking to the dining table.

"You've tried that a couple of times." Josh chuckled as Maggie took a seat opposite him.

"Good." Josh nodded.

"What I want to ask you is extremely important and I need you to be a hundred and one per cent honest."

"Just go on already." Maggie took a glance at her watch.

Josh took a deep breath, "wasmyfadaavamfire?"

"What?" Maggie could not discern what he was saying.

Josh calmed himself down, and said in a slow and audible tone, "Was my father a vampire?"

Maggie looked at him with a dumbfounded expression on her face.

How did he find out? Did he suddenly reach vampire puberty and began to exhibit the characteristic traits of vampires? Did he grow fangs? But she did not notice any, did he start craving blood? So many questions ran through Maggie's mind.

Although all races lived in what could be called 'peace', they still held some myths about the physiology of each other.

Maggie mustered the courage to reply, "How did you find out?"

Josh thought about the question and realised that he didn't feel any different. So, he decided to cook up a lie or two.

"I started feeling weird recently, started craving some blood." Maggie flinched in her seat.

"You don't have to worry though, I'm only craving raw or barely cook meat, that's all." Josh tried to sedate her fears.

'Come to think of it. I always like eating meat.' Josh thought.

Right from when he was a kid he couldn't do without eating meat, there was this pleasure he got from eating meat. He usually had urges for raw meat which he did his best to control.

"Y-you're sure you're not craving human blood?" Maggie asked terrified.

"If I was, you would've died minutes ago." Josh chuckled.

It was common sense that if vampires were really beings that their bloodlust clouded their reasoning as humans thought. It would take a great deal of willpower to stop themselves from feeding on a naked woman with an alluring body.

"So you're not feeling bloodlust?" Maggie asked.

"Let's focus on the question here, was my father a vampire?" Josh ignored her question.

Maggie sighed.

"Your mother fell in love with this hot guy, lucky her," Maggie clicked her tongue, "They were almost inseparable. She finally got pregnant for him and she revealed to me that she had fallen in love with a vampire, not just any vampire, a vampire prince."

"Wait wait wait...you're telling me, that my father was a vampire prince!" Josh exclaimed in utter disbelief.

How could he have ever thought that he had vampire genes? Or that he was the son of a fricking prince. He was royalty.

"Point of correcting. He's the King now." Maggie corrected.

Josh's jaws dropped. He was a prince and he never knew all his life. There was another question that he needed to ask, why was his aunt using the present tense 'is' instead of the past tense 'was, for a dead man.

"You mean-"

"Your father is alive."
