Enjento Supai POV:
"Whew, I somehow managed to escape that situation."
Enjento was currently in his office given to him by the King.
The office was quite large, with dimensions of roughly five-by-seven meters. Its interior was quite plain and consisted of numerous wooden cabinets and drawers where Enjento stored documents such as annual crop yields or the records of last year's tax income from every noble in the kingdom.
Besides cabinets and drawers. A plain oak desk and a black armchair were in the middle of the room. Behind that was a beautiful tapestry of one of the previous Heroes that battled one of the Demon Kings of the past. If we were to move that tapestry aside, there was a safe filled with valuables he sto- *Cough!* Rightfully and legally obtained for his services of catching and punishing corrupt nobles. Similar to how a waiter received tips for good service. He definitely didn't take them without the knowledge of the council or the King! Moving on.
This safe didn't just store valuables but also acted as a secret door leading to a staircase leading downwards to a large flat and dry cavern filled with artifacts, weapons, gadgets, government secrets, war plans, blackmail and experimental weapons that would have violated every Geneva Convention law on Earth.
This place was where Enjento was at the moment.
Enjento found this place by chance while renovating his new office several weeks ago. He honestly had no idea who built this place but judging by the countless artifacts and old books he found that dated back to over five centuries ago.
[Author's note: Wonder why he could read another world's language? For fans of the isekai genre, I think you'll know why. For those who don't, I'll cover it in later chapters.]
Looking at how there were literal mountains of dust piling up in the cavern. Enjento decided that it would make a decent temporary base of operations.
Currently, Enjento is going through several stacks of resumes and records of the applicants who wish to join his Intelligence Unit.
"Piero Jagura, talents, juggling. No."
"Koshaku Musoko, son of a Marquis. Not him. I don't want nobles to have any power in my organization if I can help it."
"Hanko Ryoshi. An excellent track record with over fifty confirmed D-rank monster kills but has a serious problem with insubordination. Not him either."
"Yopparai Gyanbura, a well-known drunk and gambler, has been through discipline camp seven times. Nope."
"This one looks promising. Keiji Rorikon. Once led two squads of men against a monster horde of five hundred and won without a single casualty."
After looking down further at his resume, Enjento quickly changed his mind.
"Has a serial record of molesting several underaged..."
"HELL NO! I AM NOT GOING TO HIRE THIS PERVERT!!!"
"Man! All of these guys are total idiots and criminals!"
"Can they not understand the "Intelligence" part of the Secret Intelligence Unit!"
"And the Agency is being sponsored by the Royal Family! Who the hell is it who recommended these incompetents to me!?!"
"All of their answers to questions like, "When surrounded by enemy forces several times larger than you, what do you do?" or "How do you deal with an assassin sent by an enemy nation to kill?" is, "Run away!"
"LIKE, WHAT THE @$*}$@*!!!!!"
*Sigh.*
Enjento pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance and leaned back on his chair.
"This will be harder than I thought."
"Well, at least I have Morrigan with me. She alone is equivalent to an army."
"If I'm too swamped in the paperwork, I can always borrow that army of hers."
"Speaking of Morrigan. I should check out the cultist and servant I caught before meeting the King."
Enjento got up and stretched his arms, and chanted the summoning spell.
A bright purple light flashed, and Morrigan appeared in her usual all-black Victorian-era get-up sitting in a twisted wire bistro chair drinking tea.
"What do you want? You're interrupting my tea time."
*Puchi!*
One of Enjento's veins on his forehead bulged out in anger.
(The nerve of this woman! While I'm busy building up my Intelligence Agency, she's in her Shadow Realm drinking tea like royalty!)
(The part about royalty isn't too far off. Hold up! That's not the point! I was just going to ask her to give me the prisoners I left in her care but seeing her relax like this is just making my blood boil! I know! I'll give her some work so she'll be suffering just like me! Hehehe!)
"Hey, what do you even want? If you called me here just to look at that scheming face of yours, I'm out of here."
Morrigan's voice woke Enjento up from his daydream and got him back on track.
"Right, I need you to do a few favours for me."
"What's in it for me?"
Morrigan POV:
"The second novel of "Lady Kireina and the Devilish Butler."
*Crash!*
"What!?!"
Morrigan dropped her teacup at the mention of the novel.
"For real!?! There's a sequel to that!?!"
Morrigan flew out of her chair and grabbed Enjento by his necktie.
"Oi! Let go of my tie! You're going to get it creased!"
Morrigan didn't let go. Instead, she looked at Enjento with an intense gaze that made him nearly take a step back.
"Is the sequel real?"
Enjento pried her hands off his necktie and looked at her with annoyance.
"Yes, it's real, you crazy gothic bookworm!"
"You'll give it to me after completing these favours?"
"Yes, I will. Since when have I ever lied or broken a promise?"
Morrigan had doubts about the lying part. After all, Enjento's job was a spy. However, it was true that the man never broke a promise.
"Deal, tell me those favours."
Enjento smiled widely at her response. Too widely in fact, that it sent shivers down her spine.
"Quite simple, there are three things I want you to do for me.
1. Interrogate those cultists I gave you. The last cultist I interrogated got blown up due to some strange snake tattoo. As the ---------, you might be able to somehow bypass that."
2. Find a good base of operations. I plan on using this place as a personal private laboratory. It'll be really bad if an employee tampered with one of my projects and accidentally set off the prototype nuclear warhead I'm currently building. Due to your existence predating even the first Hero, you probably know a lot of long-forgotten places that would make an excellent HQ.
Lastly, 3."
At this point, Enjento's face looked like the Devil having succeeded in duping a poor guy into selling his soul to him.
"Lend me your army and staff for a while."
Morrigan facepalmed and mentally beat herself up at the last statement.
*Sigh.*
"I knew this was going to happen."
"But I already promised to fulfill those favours, so I'll lend you my army. However! You can't use them to wage war against the entire continent or anything as unreasonable as that, got it!?"
Enjento nodded his head enthusiastically in response.
"No problem."
"You can leave your staff in the cavern, while you can send your army to the training grounds."
"Now, if you'll excuse me. I better inform the King to expect some company."
With that said, Enjento dashed off to start building his Intelligence Agency.
*Sigh.*
"How did I get involved with this man?"
