Chapter 19 - Rumours around

Before the sun rose, Sanosuke and Elda had already left the motel. Sanosuke brought another bag to carry more essentials.

"Where are we going to?" Sanosuke asked as they have been walking on foot for so long.

"We're going to find the battlefield of the invaders." She replied while looking on a map she brought.

He didn't understand why, but didn't ask and just kept walking.

"When night falls, your training shall start." She looked up, "It's still a while more till night."

"I need to sleep though." He argued, "Why night too? Why not now?"

"Say, you didn't explain your powers yet. I should know so I can train you more effectively." She ignored his question, which caused him to glare at her.

"Why night training?" She glanced at him and glanced back at her map.

The silence resumed as he sighed.

"I can gain a attribute of what I eat. Like I've gained sharp nails from eating one of the monsters." He explained, "If I eat more of the same monster, that attitude increases. So my nails can grow sharper if I eat the same species."

"Then we should hunt a few monsters if we see them." She scanned the area, "That's going to be tough in this season." She pondered, "What else you have? Oh yeah, sharp nose right?"

Sanosuke nodded, "I also can amplify my voice."

"There's a monster that amplifies voice?" She snapped her finger, "Oh right, there is."

"Am I going to eat more kind of monsters meat..?" He looked reluctant as he also scanned the surroundings.

"No, we are going to find the monsters you ate before. It's better to have a few sharp weapons than many blunt ones." She said, "What if we got you a monster that allows you to have wings?"

"And how would I learn to fly?" He rose a brow, which she just shrugged.

"Or breathe fire." Her eyes stared shining, "Maybe turn invisible? That would be cool!" Elda continued her mumbling as Sanosuke argued when he heard some of the suggestions.

"Why would I need a beak?" .. "I don't need a tail!"

In the end, he face palmed and grumbled through his hand, "What the hell is wrong with you?"

She grinned and said proudly, "Everything!"

He felt a sweat dripping from his forehead, 'She's beyond helping..'

Eventually, she stopped her suggestion shooting spree.

"Finally.." Sanosuke breathed a sigh of relief, "Oh right, what's this invader war? I have heard of it mentioned briefly, but never in details."

"If you don't know, how would I know. I've also heard rumours of it," Elda pinch her chin, "What's the rumours you heard of it?"

"Well," Sanosuke also paused and thought, "I've heard about how the war has left only a few demons and angels left in this world. And that there might be no angels actually left since its war, you gotta kill. And angels isn't suppose to kill."

"Hm." Elda listened and didn't reply, letting Sanosuke continue.

"I've also heard that it's because the remaining angels and demons couldn't finish their battle in wherever they came from, so they brought it here. God clashes, and the mortal suffers. But during this, that's how humans started to have powers too. So they are not really invaders, and they just accidentally stumbled across here."

"Oh," Sanosuke continued, "I've also heard that these are all just the cunning demons plan, by bringing the battle here, the angels will have to protect the humans while the demons can grow stronger with the suffering of humans."

"Where did you hear all these rumours from?" Elda asked as he shrugged.

"Here and there," He then looked at her, "What about you? What kind of rumour did you hear?"

"I've heard that it was actually the plans of the old era to explain how the powers came from." She said, "Delusional people."

"Do you believe in any of these rumours?" He pointed ahead, "Hey, there's no more trees. Grassland!"

"There's a town nearby here," Elda said while looking down at her map, "We've walked quite far. We should set up camp before the sun sets."

"Night comes faster during winter." Sanosuke nodded, "Let's stay in the forest for camp. The trees can provide a form of protection."

Elda nodded, and they went and found a spot for camp.

Night soon fell, and the tent was set up.

"What do you think of your combat skills?" Elda asked as she rubbed her shoulders, "Good? Or mah?"

"I usually sneak up on my enemies, so I'm not too sure." He replied honestly.

"Hand to hand combat it is!" She got off the log she was sitting on, "Come on, do you want to start first?"

"I guess?" He slowly got up, "My leg still-."

He quickly moved to the left, "Hey!" He caught her arm, "What happened to my first strike?"

She chuckled, but nothing about this was funny. The little light from the campfire shone her black pupils, "Do you think an enemy would give u the first strike?" She pulled his head and kneed his stomach, causing him to cough out saliva, "You gotta take that strike for yourself." And swung him to the ground, "Not bad instinct though."

He held his stomach, having forgotten such pain before.

"Come on, don't tell me that's the best you got. Subject two, four, nine nine." She squatted beside him and stared at him, "Didn't you survive Zone G?"

He's body shook, "I don't want to remember that hell." He gritted his teeth, "That fucking hell pit!" He pushed himself off the ground, "How did you know about me? Was that your true intentions? To bring me back in that hell?"

"Bring you back? I shall make you experience it again." She slowly stood up, "You have already became what human calls demons too when you decide to take the life of others."

She charged forward again with a punch, which he raised his arms to block, "You were forced this title," She quickly squatted down and swept his feet, "And yet you took it, why?"

He fell on his right arm, causing him to growl in pain.

"Because you thought that this responsibility should be burdened by you," She squatted down, looking at him as he slowly opened his eyes, "The responsibility to make sure Zone G doesn't happen again, no?"

He gritted his teeth, "How did you know?" He slowly got on his butt, and rubbed his shoulder.

"By reading your profile," She shrugged, as she took out a piece of folded paper, opening it, "Subject two four nine nine, very protective of family. Willing to do anything to ensure their safety."

He quickly tried to grab the paper, but Elda just smacked it away.

"I've heard because of a test subject, it caused many people to forget about Zone G. I'm sure you know of it, and thus accept it. But this kind of quick hypothesis is easy to break." She folded the paper, "It's by letting them experienced it again, they will remember whose forgotten memories."

"I thought you were a friend." He glared, as she laughed.

"Kid, I'm never your friend. I'm simply an ally." She stopped laughing, and stared at him, "And I don't need weak allies"
