Chapter 26 - Godless Temple

The scenery here was a great deal different from what many were used to, coniferous trees extended high into the sky, dwarfing even the enormous monsters that roamed it, their trunks large enough to hide these same monsters in full, the trees thorns were of a pale blue, the ground showed no sign of any of these thorns ever falling down.

It was as though the trees were frozen in time, bound to stand tall forever and never see change, still, the trees stood patiently, waiting without a complaint.

It was strange how simple trees to evoke such impressions, they were nothing but trees after all, they weren't frozen in time as their thorns shuffled in the wind from time to time and they couldn't be waiting or be patient for they couldn't think at all.

Even when knowing all this, Wrath still felt those things from those tall trees.

Turning her gaze away from the forest that was to her sides, she looked forward at the tall mountain whose top couldn't be seen due to the obstruction of the clouds.

If her memory was serving her well, this was where she would find the person she was looking for, she didn't really know why she wanted to meet him but she felt like she would be able to find answers in some shape or form.

To regain the name Wrath had replaced, she would have to climb this moutain and reach its top.

She moved forward, leaving the patient trees in the dust as she started walking up the mountain, such exercise wasn't much for Wrath and neither was the growing cold as she got higher and higher nor were the beasts and monsters who thought she would make a fine snack.

Snow trolls, wolves, bears and yetis couldn't compete against her blade, she noticed that some figures observed her in the distance but they chose to retreat and leave her alone.

The mountain she was climbing without any equipment was part of a great mountain range and wasn't even the tallest but it was at the top of this one in particular that should be found the entrance to the corrupted depth, the place where the person she was seeking out was.

Walking through snowstorm after snowstorm and fighting her way through creatures who didn't learn anything from the mistakes of their peers, she finally walked through not snow but clouds.

This passage felt very nostalgic to her, only a bit further, a large temple stood, it was in bad shape but still stood, just like the trees, it seemed to be waiting, waiting for something to happen before collapsing.

Around here, no snow was to be seen, the cold seemed to have completely vanished and was instead replaced by a pleasant atmosphere, the large temple seemed totally empty, only a single person seemed to be guarding it.

Stepping inside with cautiousness, she was met with a young man dressed in cleric's clothes that seemed a slight bit too big for him, he seemed to have noticed that someone was here but his gaze was a bit off the mark, as she took a few other steps forward, he finally seemed to pinpoint her location and walked up to her.

Gazing into his glassy eyes, it was clear that he was completely blind.

He extended his hands as he spoke.

"Greetings, it has been a long while since anyone entered this temple, you must be here for Sir Edwind?" he asked her, seeing his extended hands, she decided to play along and grabbed them, upon touching her, his face shifted a bit as if he hadn't been expecting this.

"Oh, I must be mistaken then" he said after removing his hands.

"What makes you think that?" she asked him, wondering what the feeling of her hands could have possibly told him.

"Well, it's just that... Sir Edwind is in need of a powerful warrior and your hands are so soft, it is as if nothing had ever touched them" he said, making Wrath stare at her own hands.

In appearance, her hands didn't appear soft at all, they looked like the hands of a killer, the bones clearly visible as if they themselves were twitching, irking to take something apart, by all accounts, her hands didn't inspire anything good and didn't even look like they belonged to a woman.

But as she touched them, they were indeed soft, impossible to think that such soft hands had ever been used to work or kill.

What a weird thing, why would her, Wrath would have such soft hands? That seemed more something for Lust, it felt like she was misremembering something, there was an obvious reason her hands remained so perfect in contrast to their appearance but she simple couldn't remember what that reason was.

"Do not worry about that, I am indeed here for Sir Edwind" she responded, the blind cleric hesitated for a few moments but ended up agreeing to let here in, her hands didn't belong to a warrior but her voice did and he thought that turning away someone who had arrived here would be foolish.

"Very well, follow me" he said as he walked throughout the temple with precision without the need of a cane, he knew the layout by heart.

"If you are here, then you must know of Sir Edwind accomplishements, in his time, he was the only able to wear the protective charm that prevented the corruption from reaching him, now anyone can use it" told the cleric as he walked.

"Sir Edwind was also the greatest swordmaster of his time, no one could go against his blade but Sir Edwind was a true hero, he used his skill with the sword to bring down terrifying beasts and monsters, saving people and even princesses, he is the one who made it so common for fairytales to involve the rescue of a princess you know?"

"Alas, he wasn't invincible, he was great and noble but it wasn't enough against the beast that ruled the corrupted depth, the creature was the source of the corruption that is locked in this mountain, it threatened to spread even further, warping and changing everything it touched, so of course, Sir Edwind stepped in, wearing the mysterious charm that allowed one to traverse the depth without fearing corruption, he set out to confront the abhorrent beast"

"Did he lose?" questionned Wrath.

"No, of course he won, the corruption has stalled and can no longer spread as it used to be able to, Sir Edwind slayed the beast but the battle wasn't without consequences, I can not say what happened exactly but Sir Edwind's last act was leave the charm outside of the depth and lock himself inside, I can only assume that while the charm prevented corruption from the thing that filled the depth, the same thing couldn't be said about the beast itself" spoke the cleric, sounding incredibly sorrowful by the end of it, in contrast with the bright smile he had worn at the start of the story.

They both arrived before large doors, the cleric grabbed a key that hung from his neck and opened the doors, the two doors moved by themselves as the cleric turned to Wrath.

"Miss, I beg of you, if you were to fail, bring back the charm to the surface and if you were to succeed, well then, I'll have to thank you in advance" spoke the cleric as he gave her the charm, a simple necklace with a piece of metal attached to it.

She didn't say another words and stepped inside the depth, leaving the cleric behind as the door closed themselves behind her.

"Give him a warrior's death" he muttered to himself.
