Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Further Investigation

Detective Jones sat in his office, going through the case file of the murder of Katherine White. He couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the case than what meets the eye. As he went through each witness statement, his attention was caught by what Drew Lake, a neighbor of the deceased, had said about Katherine not calling back after the doorbell. It got him thinking, could it be that the killer came after Daryl had left, or it was Daryl himself? Whoever came that day must have something to do with Katherine's death. Detective Jones pondered deeply on these thoughts.

Then there was the letter, the one that was sent to the secretary. Detective Jones couldn't shake off the feeling that the killer wrote the message and sent it to the secretary to avoid suspicion. "The killer must be the one who did that," he thought. Katherine was also being stalked by someone, but she never confided in her friend, Drew. It got him thinking, were they friends, or had something happened that made Katherine not trust her friend enough to share her problems? Detective Jones couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Katherine that made her hide her troubles from her closest confidante.

Just then, Detective Denzel walked in. "Jones, what's up? What are you doing?" he asked.

"I don't believe what John oh sorry, I mean what Daryl said," Detective Jones replied.

"It appears you're thinking your brain out on this matter. Take it easy. We'll get to the bottom of it, okay?" Detective Denzel advised.

"Okay," Detective Jones replied with a nod.

"What did Daryl say?" Detective Denzel asked.

"He said he left and after that, Katherine disappeared. Don't you think it's weird? He confessed not guilty and keeps claiming it," Detective Jones expressed his confusion.

"Yeah, it is indeed weird. Daryl Sabara was abusive and possessive, claiming it was all for love. I don't believe one word that spewed out of that man's mouth. But until we find concrete evidence, we just have to let him go and tell him not to leave the country because we will always be in touch," Detective Denzel replied.

"That's true. We need concrete evidence to lock him up, but what if he isn't the killer and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time?" Detective Jones said.

"Hmm, that's a good point," Detective Denzel affirmed.

"There's only one way to find evidence, and that's by asking as many people as we can who knew Katherine," Detective Jones spoke with a countenance smeared with hope.

"Where are you going?" Detective Denzel asked.

"To meet Katherine's secretary. I believe she must know something that can help us solve this case and find the killer. I could recall that Drew said she saw a message that was sent from Katherine's phone to her secretary. So I believe she must know something," Detective Jones said as he put on his suit, and approached the door.

"Wait, that's true, but not only that; why didn't Katherine send Drew a message as well? If you would ask me, I don't think they were close to the extent of sharing secrets as Drew claimed," Detective Denzel added.

"You're right. I have thought about that also, but we don't know for sure what happened, and another thing is, we don't know why Drew hesitated to call Katherine before she disappeared. You remember she said Katherine told her she would call back because someone was at the door, but why didn't she also call her to know what happened when Katherine didn't call back for a few days?" Detective Jones pointed out.

"Yeah, that's it. That's what I thought about too. Hmmm!" Denzel corroborates

"I gotta go. I'll call when I find out anything." Jones says.

Okay, dude.
