Chapter 4 - Saltborne

You sit under the pier as the rain pours through the cracks between the planks. You lay silently as the water laps at your feet. The dried salt loosely sticks your fingers together. You hear in the distance the monstrous noises coming from the ocean. The waves rise as the sound continues to get closer.

"Hroaghaghaoaghaogh," the monster moans, the sound rattling through your bones. Your stomach turns like the tumbling of a washing machine.

"You seem to be in quite a bit of trouble," a voice purrs from behind you. The cat, which had begun to speak, prowls to your side. You smile at the only remotely comprehendable thing you've experienced in a while. The cat's newfound eloquence reminds you of a movie you'd seen a couple years back. 'Maybe I'll start seeing people with button eyes next,' you think to yourself, dredging up a tiny chuckle.

You rub your palm over the cats head, slightly perturbed by the human-like sounds which sometimes escape from the cat's throat.

"Achtchtchtcht," another Seabeast groans out from across the water. The sand begins to vibrate while you look through the cracks in the pier above. The sand crabs scurry away leaving you with the cat, obviously aware of something you aren't, but you have no inclination to leave. You look at the cat, and it seems both of you have a resigned to stay where you are for now.

You gaze around and focus on a line of Saltservants, once human beings with sharp, crystalline salt structures sprouting from their appendages and orifices, watching from the top of the sand line. There are quite a few of them, but you'll know you'll be safe on the beach, which lies inside the Seabeast's territory. They would never dare invade those things territory.

"You sure are lucky the Seabeasts are neutral to native creatures," the cat sounds, rubbing it's head against your leg. You absentmindedly pet it, wondering how it's fur isn't rough with sand yet.

"Y'know, I could say the same for you," you finally reply. You look around another time, and the servants are still there, but the crowd seems to have mostly thinned out. Also, you can feel the rain beginning to ease, so you grab your things, preparing move.

The clouds begin to part. "Like the Red Sea," you jokingly mumble under your breath. The cat hears this and gives a slightly amused glance to you.

With the rain now stopped, you look over the sea and into the sky. You see the rifts in the sky above you, the tears in space which led to this ending.

"I hope I get the True Ending in my next life," you remorsefully, half-jokingly tell the cat.

"You're quite a strange on," says the obviously strange talking cat. It walks along the path of the waves, just avoiding the water, and you see the Seabeasts clearly in the distance. They were gigantic beings, the largest ones being larger than cruise ships, and all being slightly reminiscent of animals that existed before the break. You pondered how accurate the term "break" was, the the phenomenon was more like a shatter, a shatter of reality, a shatter of common sense, and a shatter of regular life.

"I kinda miss the old days," you reminisce to the cat. The cat acknowledges you with a slight nod, but doesn't say any more. Just as you say this, though, the ground beneath you bends as space rips and another fracture forms beneath you. You and the cat fall in together, unaware of what awaits you on the other side.
