Chapter 37 - EPISODE 37: A WEEKEND SPENT IN THE REAL WORLD PART XI: XCALIBUR AOP 2! UNION OF THE WORLDS PART X: LEVEL VII: SCORPIO! THE CROSS STANCE PART II: TRANSCENDING THE PREDATORY CHAIN!

I scanned our patient with the Scorpio System. The moment I did this, a notification appeared that read, 'TRACE MODE ENGAGED!'

A geographical map appeared. It was a map that displayed the likely habitats of the creature that could inflict this sort of Debilitating Venomous Attack. The map began wide scale by scanning the continent and gradually began to narrow down to specific ecologies. It showed multiple species of animals that were in one way or another carriers of the venom, some of which had adapted to it and were now immune to it.

"Oh ho! So that's the Supply Chain now isn't it?" I said with a smug look on my face.

"Looks like an ecological map or something" Ciella said.

"Yes, an ecological map of the Venomous Supply Chain. The only one missing from it is the big boss…now where are…" I was about to say when a huge black spot suddenly appeared in the map.

"Oh, I see…the target of assassination is Old Billy Bones now isn't it? Let's see how you make it to the treasure now that the map is in the hands of James Pleiades Hawkings" I said with a smirk.

"Ciella, you look after the patient" I said.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"To do some Hunting" I said simply.

"Why can't I come?" Ciella asked.

"Remember, our priority is to keep our patient alive and if this boss is anything like I imagine, the moment we both leave, I'm quite certain it might launch an auxiliary Byakko-like attack against the Suzaku Peristylium. Stay with the patient so that if it dares to try that nonsense, you can notify me to send Class 0 your way" I said and walked out.

"More PSP proverbs?" Ciella stared at me in amusement.

"MMORPGs usually have messaging systems of sorts. You should be able to stay in touch with me" I advised Ciella.

"Do you know what manner of creature this boss might be?" Ciella asked.

"I think I might have a bit of an idea. 'Spiders flee before it', 'Fenix Tears', only one creature in all of mythology matches that profile" I said seriously and headed out.

Soon, I was charging through the woods.

"Ciella, do you know the reason for the saying 'safer to drink from upstream than downstream'?" I asked Ciella.

"I've heard from someone once that if farm animals and other animals are utilizing water upstream and people are performing menial tasks with it, the ones utilizing it downstream get the brunt of the pollution. The further downstream one is, the worse the possibility of pollution right?" Ciella said as though she were unsure her answer was correct.

"Exactly right, hence the Venomous Supply Chain. The closer one is to the producer of a product, the more likely it is that the product is wholesome because if the source is verifiable and identifiable, they become aware of the accountability of their actions and know that if the product causes harm, they can easily be prosecuted. On the other hand, the further away the producer is from the consumer, the more likely they are to conceal their schemes beneath the veil of anonymity. If the water at the source that is, at the producer's end is purer than that further downstream, the implication is that the product reaching the consumer is somehow being intercepted hence…the Venomous Supply Chain. The Scorpio System exists to trace that Venomous Supply Chain" I explained to Ciella while racing towards the big black spot on the map that supposedly marked the boss' location.

Soon, I arrived at a swampy clearing in the middle of the woods. I checked the Scorpio System's map. The black spot and my location had almost overlapped.

"So the boss is somewhere in this general area huh? Something that big could not easily conceal itself" I thought and checked my surroundings carefully.

"For safety reasons, it would be best to equip my cape" I said as I checked my inventory.

Among my armour was 'The Cape Of Fortitude/Kindness' and amongst my Headgear was the 'Sunshades'. I equipped them.

"POWER LIMITER UNLOCK! SPEED LIMITER! UNLOCK! SEALS OF ENDREGEN AND KOLMNID UNLOCK!" I called out.

With the release of each seal, the entire area trembled. My Cape took on its fiery form and my Watery Armour appeared. The golden insignia of the Lion decorated the back of my Cape and my Sunshades transformed into a shadow partially masking my face.

"SHOW YOURSELF! I KNOW YOU'RE HIDDEN IN THE SWAMP!" I roared.

The entire area began to tremble with the weight of my presence. The swamp began to bubble and become turbulent. I shut my eyes. Multiple clones of myself appeared.

"I'll use your eyes as a gunsight! Keep your shades on at all times!" I ordered.

"Of course!" my clones replied and accessed their menus.

"The Libra System measures the genome of animals against that of humans. Priority is placed on the digestive system of the animal" I recalled the Libra System's functionality.

"You guys access the Libra System!" I ordered.

They obeyed.

"Priority…is placed on the digestive system of the animal…Spiders flee before it. A food chain!" I realized in horror.

The stats of the creature about to appear before us gradually materialized in the Libra System as the System took on the name 'Libra System Ver. Library!'

"An ancient creature…that kills with a single gaze…a stare is intense enough to petrify even ghosts and spirits…an indirect stare can petrify a human…the keys to finding it are the street wisdom and smartmouthedness of a Dreamweaver…it lurks in the sewers like a Weaver Of Calamity…the only things capable of beating it are a Blaze, the reflection of its own gaze or the venom from its own fangs…the only cure for one bitten by it…are the tears of a Phoenix! Indeed…it is as I suspected…the creature responsible for our patient's bite is…" I muttered as a huge black serpent burst out of the swamp baring its massive fangs.

"…IS A BASILISK!" I roared and took my battle stance with my eyes shut and the double shielded vision of my clone technique plus my Sunshades creating multiple layers of sight shields to reduce the debilitating effects of its gaze.
