Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 5 — Dark Shadows Watching Loved Ones

Drrtttt... Ddrrrttt... Ddrrrtt...

Dalmi's handphone which was in her coat pocket kept vibrating after she entered her house. Apparently the vibration on her handphone came from several incoming messages that Gyungsoo sent for her. The man who was still on the bridge where the bloodless incident happened that night repeatedly contacted Dalmi via text message.

In the short message, Gyungsoo told Dalmi that the man they saw standing on the edge of the bridge a while ago, has now really died after he jumped off the bridge. "Dalmi, I'm so stupid because I don't believe you. I'm sorry that I didn't listen to you earlier, Dalmi. If only I had listened to you earlier, maybe we could have saved the man on the edge of the bridge," Gyungsoo said in a short message he sent to Dalmi .

However, after one minute the short message was sent and received by Dalmi, it turned out that Gyungsoo did not get any reply message from Dalmi. Therefore, Gyungsoo sent a short message to Dalmi again.

"Dalmi, let's work together to save people just once. If you're not sure, why don't you give it a try?" Gyungsoo wrote in the second short message he sent to Dalmi. Unfortunately, this second short message from Gyungsoo did not get any response from Dalmi.

Because Dalmi did not show any response to the short message sent by Gyungsoo, Gyungsoo finally decided to send a short message to Dalmi again. This is the third text message from Gyungsoo to Dalmi that night.

"Dalmi, please listen to me and think about this carefully. How can we endure this feeling of responsibility for the rest of our lives, when we are devastated after just one death?" Gyungsoo wrote then he sent this message to Dalmi.

However, the third message sent by Gyungsoo also did not get a reply from Dalmi. Gyungsoo gave up then he went back on his way to his apartment. Meanwhile, at Dalmi's house, this girl doesn't want to reply to messages sent by Gyungsoo. But Dalmi, who had just returned home, immediately struggled with fear and worry that swept her heart.

The fear and worry that enveloped Dalmi's heart that night came after Dalmi closed the entrance in the living room and then saw a dark shadow appear behind her loved ones. "No... No way... Please not now...," Dalmi said in a stuttering voice. "Please, give them another chance to live. Let them live a little longer." She pleaded to the dark shadow that was stalking the lives of her loved ones. SHe hoped the dark shadow would love her and grant her wish.

"What should I do?" This girl wonders to herself, how can she save the people she loves so much who also lives with her when she can't even save her own Grandpa, Haewon, and the man standing on the bridge that night.

For a moment Dalmi was stunned at the entrance of her house after she saw a dark shadow behind her loved ones and always followed them wherever they went. The dark shadow instantly made Dalmi's tears come out of her eyes and fall on her beautiful face.

"Noona... (This call is for older women. However, Noona call is only used by men)" A boy's voice clearly heard calling Dalmi who was still standing in front of the entrance of their house. His loud voice suddenly woke Dalmi from her daydream. After waking up from her long daydream, Dalmi immediately wiped her tears quickly with both hands.

"Yes, What's up?" Dalmi replied from where she was standing.

"Why are you even standing there?" asked Dalmi's first brother. "Come here!" Yinjun asked Dalmi to quickly join him and the rest of their family at the dinner table.

"We've been waiting for you for a long time, Dalmi," said Dalmi's older brother, Zhuyang. "Look at Changyi's face! He's been suffering since he was hungry." Zhuyang laughed with Yinjun and their parents.

"Noonai!!" Changyi snapped. "Don't you feel sorry for me? You should have told us you were going home late tonight," Changyi said curtly. "We've contacted you many times. But no answer from you!" Changyi looked at Dalmi with an annoyed expression. "Is your phone broken? Can't you use your phone properly? Should I teach you first how to use it?" scorned Dalmi's youngest sister.

"Hey!! Let your sister sit down first. After that, you can nag her," said a woman who sat opposite her husband. This woman's name is Yoora. She is the mother of Zhuyang, Dalmi, Yinjun, and Changyi.

Yoora's words made Changyi snort weakly while Dalmi laughed, instead of feeling uncomfortable with Changyi's anger. How can Dalmi not laugh, because in her eyes, Changyi looks even more adorable when he's angry like that.

While laughing, Dalmi then walked calmly towards the dining table. Even though at that time her heart was filled with anxiety and worry, but Dalmi tried hard to hide it from her parents and three brothers.

"I'm really sorry for ignoring calls from all of you. Please forgive me," Dalmi said as she walked towards the dining table

"What important thing made you ignore our calls today, Dalmi? You even came home late without telling us beforehand. This doesn't usually happen to you," asked the man with glasses and slanted eyes who sat opposite Yoora, to Dalmi who just took off her coat. He is the husband of Yoora and the father of Zhuyang, Dalmi, Yinjin, and Changyi.

"Dad is true!" Zhuyang said. "Where did you go today?" Zhuyang asked with a curious expression, while Dalmi remained silent. It turns out that Dalmi is watching the dark shadows behind her loved ones and the clock of their lives running backwards. "Dalmi..." called this man.

Dalmi woke up when she heard Zhuyang calling her name. "Ehem," she cleared her throat and then sat down on the dining chair right beside Yoora. "Actually, I went to the funeral home—"

"What did you say?! You just came from the funeral home?!" Yinjun interrupted Dalmi's speech quickly even before Dalmi finished speaking. "What for?!" asked this handsome young man.

"Ridiculous question!" Changyi pouted. "Surely someone died there!" he said curtly.

"I know too!" Yinjun replied no less curtly than Changyi. "I mean, who died?" he asked. He was getting curious.

Dalmi caught her breath before she started speaking. "Haewon," answered Dalmi. Dalmi's words immediately shocked Dalmi's parents and three brothers.

"Oh, God!!" Jingmi, Yoora, Zhuyang, Yinjun, and Changyi replied in unison. "What has happened to her, Dalmi?" Yoora asked Dalmi.

"Haewon fell in the kitchen of her restaurant this afternoon. She was seriously injured and was declared dead before arriving at the hospital," said Dalmi in tears.

Seeing her daughter crying, Yoora immediately hugged Dalmi tightly. And then she said, "Dalmi, I know there are no words that can ease your sadness right now, but please know that we are thinking of you. We are sorry to hear about Haewon's passing. She is a kind woman and has a great spirit. Haewon will be greatly missed by all of us here."

Yoora said the right thing. Her words contained something that could comfort and help Dalmi, and not cause more sadness for Dalmi. So Dalmi gladly accepted Yoora's condolences. This is evidenced by Dalmi's head moving up and down rapidly several times.

"I should have been tougher on saving Haewon, but—"

"Dalmi, there is no formula or exact science of when someone will leave and when we will face loss. When a heart of gold must stop beating, and hands that work hard must rest, we will also think that God is breaking our hearts. But, all of that to prove to us that God only takes the best. You know, some souls are too beautiful for this world. That's why they left. So you shouldn't blame yourself. The fate of those who have died and those who will soon die is not your responsibility. It's in God's control," Jingmi said before they had dinner together.

After dinner ended, Dalmi went to her room. In her room, Dalmi looked at a photo that was engraved in a plain white photo frame, and was sitting on a small table beside her bed. It is a photo of Grandpa Dalmi during his life.

When she saw the photo of her grandfather, suddenly tears fell on Dalmi's beautiful face. While crying, Dalmi apologized to her Grandpa that it had been a long time since she had returned there — to her Grandfather's final resting place.

"Grandpa, how are you? I hope you are always happy in God's Heaven," said Dalmi in a trembling voice. "Grandpa, I'm sorry I haven't visited you lately." Dalmi then wiped her tears using one hand.

"Grandpa, I'm thinking about something. Gyungsoo said that being able to see someone's death is the most beautiful gift from God not a curse. He also said that he would help me and wanted to work together to help others. As my best friend, he's really cute, right?" Dalmi laughed awkwardly when discussing death and the special abilities she had.

"But Grandpa, if there used to be someone who believed in me and wanted to help me, then I might be able to save you." Dalmi said accompanied by teary eyes. "Grandpa, tonight, I saw a dark shadows in this house. They are following the people we love. Not only that, but they have 12 hours and 49 minutes left of their lives. Can I save them?" Dalmi asked her Grandpa's photo, before she took her cell phone from her coat pocket.

After getting her cell phone, Dalmi saw that there were three short messages from Gyungsoo. And how shocked she was when learned that the man standing on the edge of the bridge had actually died. But what made Dalmi even more disbelieving was that now Gyungsoo really believed in her special ability.

Therefore, immediately, Dalmi called Gyungsoo and she said that a dark shadow appeared in her house. They are stalking the lives of her loved ones. When they find out about it, Gyungsoo and Dalmi plan something to help the people Dalmi loves. Unfortunately, bad things are really unavoidable.

"When people we love die, the hardest part of life is not letting go of those we have lost, but finding the strength and courage to move on without them," someone said from deep in heart.
