Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: New Guy

The halls were always so crowded, but Lorelai didn't have any trouble with them, being the tallest and possibly scariest girl in school, people would automatically get out of the way. Lucy on the other hand would almost get knocked down most days unless she was with her bestie, as Lorelai was most definitely her shield. Today wasn't any different, several students would bump into Lucy and she would be the one apologizing while Lorelai was a couple of meters ahead. Students rushed to get out of her way even quicker than usual, as for some reason, Ms.O'Siris seemed to be on a war path today and no one wanted to be on the other end of that. Lorelai reached her locker, opening it before turning back to see Lucy struggling to get by everybody so she yelled at everyone loitering in the middle of the hallway. "Yo, either you're against the lockers or you're moving, so move", Lorelai says, and the other students stared back, looking into her scary face before running away as quickly as possible.

Lorelai was feeling off but she couldn't quite put her finger on it, all she knew is that she was pissed off for some reason and it wasn't going away. That changed however when Lucy finally caught up, opening the locker next to hers, and pulling something out of her bag to give to her best friend. "Here, this is for you, Lori," Lucy said, using the nickname she gave her friend, making the girl in question freeze up, it was always hard for her to argue when she was called that. Lorelai looked over slowly, worried about what her friend wanted, but this time Lucy only had a gift, handing her friend a little box. "You didn't have to-" Lorelai began but Lucy wouldn't hear of it, "you are my best friend, just accept it already," she said, glaring up at the giant girl until she accepted the gift. "Ugh... fine", Lorelai finally gave in, taking the gift and opening it up carefully to find a little wooden bear, she could tell by the lingering scent that Lucy made it herself. "Thanks, Lu", Lorelai said, returning with the nickname she'd used for her friend, inspecting each and every detail before placing it on the top shelf of her locker.

"Yeah, I made a bear for you, I made a fox for Mom, I made a cat for Kimmy and a dog for Tyler," Lucy said, over the moon as she continued to talk about all the old people skills she was picking up while visiting Coral Mountain. "And what did you make for yourself? Let me guess... a bunny rabbit?" Lorelai asks rhetorically, knowing her friend was pretty much obsessed with rabbits, she even had one, and her name was Olivia. Ms.Ghent smiled pulling out the little wooden rabbit, "you know me well sir," Lucy joked, giving her friend a wide smile for her silly line. "Oh my god, my pronouns are she/they get it right," Lorelai said sarcastically, in an overly dramatic tone, pretending to be offended by her bestie calling her Sir. It took Lucy a few moments to process her friend's words before finally understanding it was a joke, laughing for a few moments. Before anything else could be said, the first bell rang out, letting everyone there know that they had 5 minutes to get to class. Lorelai walked Lucy to class, saying a quick goodbye and reminding her friend that she'd meet her in the library at lunchtime before heading to class herself.

By the time lunch rolled around Lorelai was already in the library as she had a spare the period prior, spending her time researching Angrboða. Most gangs faded in and out over the years, a few stuck around but no other group besides major mafias would last this long, all except this Angrboða. Lorelai first heard about it in the late 1980s and continued to hear little whispers about it over the years but honestly, they were ghosts, even more than her. Even weirder than that, apparently, their home base was in Lorelai's hometown, which was one town over, less than an hour away by car. Lorelai knew based on the files that the Sons Of Blood were trying to make a deal with them, handling transport of something but she wasn't sure what. But based on the transport records, weights, and equipment used, Lorelai guessed it was either rare exotic animals meant to be pets or food, that, or people.

Of course just as the pieces were coming together, Lorelai heard a familiar voice, and based on the way she was speaking, Lucy wasn't alone. Lucy was being extra cheerful and friendly, so it was obvious to Lorelai that her friend was giving some new students a tour. Which meant their study session would probably be put on hold for today and they'd have to study after Lucy's cheerleading practice. Lorelai closed her laptop and let out a loud huff, getting Lucy's attention and she came over with the new guy. "So is this your latest victim?" Lorelai asked, raising an eyebrow curiously at the man, but her expression soon changed as there was something that smelt off about him.

The young man in question seemed to be a high schooler or at least he appeared to pass for one but put him in a cowboy hat and he also could have been easily mistaken for 25. He was tall, about Lorelai's height, but his shoulders were a little wider, making him appear bigger than her overall. His hair was shaggy and black, it just skimmed his shoulders and it was styled back but a few loose tendrils hung down brushing his cheeks and the edge of his jaw. His face was a tad on the longer side but not abnormally so and his sharp features only added to the overall intensity of his calm expression. Lorelai couldn't tell if his diamond-shaped face had a natural smouldering effect or if he'd practiced until he could do it all the time, either way, it was annoying. His big downturned eyes were green, leaning towards more yellow than brown in the center which only made them appear brighter. His lips were somewhere in between thin and full, with a sharp Cupid's bow and as he smiled all could see his teeth were white as snow.

He was also well dressed, especially for a high schooler, with a nice dark green dress shirt and dark grey, almost black slacks with a belt. On top was a grey bomber jacket and a satchel-type backpack in dark brown slung over top, but no other accessories except for the watch on his left wrist. Normally, something like that wouldn't catch her attention but seeing as it was a Vario WW1 Trench Watch, it certainly took all of her focus once her gaze fell upon it. It was certainly before her time but Lorelai took several classes on Fashion History about a decade ago, taking a particular interest in the World Wars. It seemed out of place but it could have been an heirloom or something to that effect, to her though, it seemed unlikely as who would wear their great-grandfather's watch just out and about and to a rowdy school no less? The next thought that crossed Lorelai's mind was that it could have been a recreation, as that style had come back into fashion recently. However, the slight wear and tear to the leather and the glass was a tad foggy, not to mention there were a few differences between the original and the new ones that were obvious to her.

Lorelai tried not to linger on it, as it wasn't that important, it was just an old watch, it didn't matter, however, the way he was eyeing Lucy was. This boy had been standing here for less than a minute and already gazed over at Lucy three times, glancing up and down her frame, as if he was mentally undressing her. If looks could kill this new guy would have been dead several times over, but then again the school would be filled with dead bodies if that were the case. "Nice watch, new guy", Lorelai said, her tone sharp as a knife, very much wanting to cut him to pieces, but Lucy gave her the look and she forced a smile. "I'm Lucy's best friend, Lorelai O'Siris, it's a pleasure to meet you, Mister?" Lorelai grounded out with much effort, definitely giving stone-cold crazy vibes but that's what she was going for. "I'm Matthew, Matthew Quinn, nice to meet you, Lori", the new guy said, with Lorelai following up immediately with, "that's Lorelai or Ms.O'Siris to you, New Guy". Lorelai leaned back in her chair as Matthew inquired why, in a very annoying playful tone, with the former responding, "otherwise you'll know me as the psycho bitch who broke your nose".

"Lori, play nice, please," Lucy whisper-yelled, a little worried by her behaviour as she wasn't usually this bad with new people. "Fine, he gets a pass, now, Lu I thought we were studying for our general science quiz," Lorelai spoke, completely ignoring this Matthew kid and he definitely noticed. "Shit," Lucy said, well more shouted, whispering an apology of sorts before saying she'd be right back, "I'll go grab my notes and lunch, I'll be right back, don't pick on Maddy while I'm gone". Lorelai held up her hands like she was being held at gunpoint, being playfully offended that her friend would say such a thing, "you have my word Miss Ghent, I shall not unjustly lay a hand or speak a single cruel word upon this young man, on my honour as a gentleman". Lorelai spoke just like a proper old Sheriff-type, even tipping an invisible cowboy hat Lucy's way, watching with a slight smile until she was out of earshot, turning her attention to this Matthew Quinn.

"You're not a gentleman..." Matthew said, with Lorelai shortly replying, "and you're not as stupid as you look" before he sat down with her so she could explain a few things. "First of all, Lucy is my best friend and I know her better than anyone, she isn't into you, she's just nice, okay?" Lorelai said, pausing to let the boy process before continuing as he still seemed a bit confused. "You know how some people bat for the other team, well... Lucy doesn't play ball... she's more like an Umpire, a part of the game but she ain't scoring any home runs if you catch my drift", but Matthew just looked more confused so Lorelai spell it out for him. She told Matthew that Lucy is Asexual and not looking for a relationship, she was very open about it but wouldn't bring it up unless someone asked.

"So I'll warn you once, fuckboy, I have an old pick-up truck and shovel, and I'm not afraid to bury you six feet under, so watch it or else you'll end up being chopped into little tiny pieces and buried in the woods" Lorelai spoke with the kind of confidence of a man who had already been to prison and honestly, Matthew couldn't tell if she was being serious or not but did his best to keep a straight face. "That's hot," Matthew muttered as his lips curled into a little smirk and Lorelai was shocked, as it wasn't a response she was expecting at all. Hearing his statement all she was able to say to utter was "what the fuck", blanking out, finding herself in brand new territory as all the past boys who wanted Lucy would simply back off, being polite before running away. It completely caught her off guard, so much so that she almost stumbled over, somehow managing to stay upright while trying but failing to process what he said.

Luckily though before anything else was said, Lucy came back to find Matthew staring at her bestie, while Lorelai stared off into nothing, looking quite confused, which was very unlike her. "You know I was thinking, Matthew is new to the area, why don't we invite him to our movie night?", Lucy suggested with a smile, before turning to Mr.Quinn, asking if that would be something he was interested in. The young man in question leaned in slightly and for a split second his eyes shot towards Lorelai before focusing on Lucy, saying he'd love to come, offering to buy some snacks or something. Lorelai, having none of it was about to argue but then Lucy looked at her all happy and instead offered to host the evening activities. "Oh, really, you've never invited me over before though," Lucy said without thinking, but Lorelai responded quickly, "well, there's a first time for everything, Lu, now how does this Saturday sound to everyone?".
