Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Stage Left, Detective

It had been a couple of weeks since THAT weekend and Lorelai was ready to bang her head repeatedly against a wall until her forehead gushed blood, as Mr.Quinn was still hanging around. Not only that but he became Lucy's new studying buddy for mathematics as they shared that class together and somehow, he was actually really good at it. So Lorelai just had to bite her tongue and bare it, trying not to let how she really felt out in the open, however, it seemed pretty obvious to all of her other "friends".

Tyler Dennis and Kimmy Court would sometimes sit with her and Lucy, along with Matthew now at lunchtime, although Kimmy's girlfriends, Leah and Mari would also hang out from time to time. Lorelai wouldn't really consider them her friends but they were friends with Lucy so she put up with them, being polite and even helping with homework or giving relationship advice. It wasn't a lot but they all spent enough time with Lorelai to recognize her dislike for Matthew, but out of all of them, Tyler was the one who gave her a hard time about it. He was under the same impression as Lucy, believing Lorelai secretly liked Matthew and seeing as he himself had a huge crush on the guy, Tyler behaved like a jealous tool the majority of the time.

Today wasn't any different, Lorelai and Lucy met up with Matthew by the main stairwell before heading off to their lockers to get their things before the school day actually started. Matthew's locker just happened to be across from theirs so they could all chat before heading off in different directions to first-period, as they didn't have the same class. During this time, Lorelai just tried her best not to gag every time Matthew said anything or looked at her with that stupid smoulder of his, as it was so annoying, he was so annoying. It was weird though, Lorelai had been cat-called, threatened, held at gunpoint, and had to listen to stupid sexist men over the years and yet, none of those guys or situations got under her skin the way Matthew did. There was just something about him that made her want to knee him in the balls to prevent him from procreating, as the world having just one Matthew Quinn was more than enough.

"What's with the gloomy face Lu, is your dad still missing?" Matthew asked, and Lorelai corrected him, saying it was Lucy's stepdad that went missing, her tone somewhat sharp, it was the same with her eyes. "Don't worry, he'll turn up eventually" she continued, placing a gentle hand on her head, speaking as calmly as possible, despite knowing that he wasn't coming back Lorelai tried to sound reassuring as she didn't want to see her friend sad. In turn, Lucy nodded her head, admitting that she wasn't really worried about him, she was worried about her mom, as she was having a hard time without Kent.

In order to lift the mood, Matthew and Lorelai then tried to change the subject, both asking about her rabbit Olivia at the exact same time, which earned a small laugh from Lucy. She thought it was funny that despite "hating" each other, they seemed to be in sync most of the time, it was almost scary at times how their brains worked. Like usual Lorelai just rolled her eyes, not acknowledging what her friend said while right on cue, Matthew teased her, going on about destiny, earning an elbow jaw from the tall pale brunette. Lorelai coldly stated about how Destiny could go suck an egg as she slammed the door of her locker, muttering about how it already fucked her over. She then reminded them that class was starting in less than 5 minutes and that they'd have to run in order to get there on time.

However, as if on cue, the second Lorelai stepped away to head off to class was the same moment a teacher came on the P.A. system and called her down to the office. "Ah, what the hell do they think I did now?" Lorelai thought, rubbing the back of her head while letting out a groan, annoyed as she didn't do anything wrong, or at least anything that would warrant this. Lorelai let out a huff before accepting her fate, saying what was possibly her final farewell, waving goodbye being overly dramatic as she dragged her exhausted self down to the office. Of course, she took her sweet time, as she hadn't slept the past few days and wasn't going to use any more energy than she had to, taking about twice the amount of time as usual.

"Ms.Tanner, Ms.Allen", Lorelai said, greeting the office staff politely before inquiring why she was called down, insisting she didn't do anything like always. This wasn't the first time she had been called down to the office, and honestly, it was getting kind of old, and not exclusive to her time at this high school either. Due to Lorelai's height and slender frame plus the somewhat loose-fitting masculine-type clothes she was known for wearing, she was often mistaken for a boy. Oddly enough though, they said Lorelai wasn't in trouble with any teachers, parents, or what have you, which confused her quite a bit, but her feelings leaned more on the annoyed side as she was already in a bad mood. At least it did until a certain man walked in through the front office doors, with Lorelai accidentally muttering "fuck" under her breath, hoping in the following moment that no one heard her.

It was Detective Dustin C. Penn, the newest police officer Lorelai chose to communicate with when making her "anonymous" calls, as the previous one retired several years ago. Not much had changed about him since Lorelai saw him last, perhaps a few extra grey hairs and a wrinkle or two but he looked pretty much the same. The detective was about average in overall height and size although he was a tad more on the muscular side, with an all-around rugged country man sort of vibe. With his olive green-brown eyes and his long and dark, curly brown hair pulled back into a tight but messy bun, he was quite the looker. Even with the cuts and scrapes that littered his body, his dark desert skin was still beautiful, looking rather soft, all but his hands anyway, as they were the hands of a working man. His outfit screamed working man too, or at least, it was practically the definition of what the average person could picture a detective wearing. His off-white button-up, his badge hanging down around his neck, covering part of his tie, the fitted grey slacks with actual suspenders, and a blazer on top, it was nearly perfect. What brought it all together was the classic trench coat that hit just below the knees, it was that and the curious, determined look in his eyes, analyzing everything.

Detective Penn strolled right over to Lorelai, taking hold and sticking out his badge, inquiring in a polite but stern tone if he could ask her a few questions. Lorelai looked down at the ground, almost laughing to herself, gazing back up and giving Mr.Penn a little smirk as she nodded her head. He asked her to follow him, with the detective leading Lorelai to a meeting room, with Ms.O'Siris pulling out her phone for a moment. She messaged Lucy, knowing her friend would be worried and unable to completely focus on her work so the text read, "it's all good, just being questioned by the Po-Po, hopefully, I'm not going to jail, lol". Lorelai then slipped her cell away before the detective looked back, opening the door and holding it so she could enter first.

Lorelai takes a seat, sitting all relaxed with her legs spread, wishing she could be back home in bed, or on her couch as it was super comfortable as well. She was barely paying attention as the detective asked if she knew what Rune was, with the former replying with the literal definition. "I'm pretty sure that a rune is a letter of an ancient Germanic alphabet, or an unknown mark of mystery or magic, right?" Lorelai said leaning her head back, and stretching her arms before leaning forward to rest her upper body on the table. Just as she got comfortable, Mr.Penn put down several photos of her, talking to various ex-gang members and associates of the Sons of Blood.

Before she could say anything, Mr.Penn put another photo down, but this one was different, it was much older, well not that old but it was probably taken two decades ago. "Woah, that is freaky like Friday, damn..." Lorelai said, pretending to be surprised, next asking if she could keep the photo to show her friends, thinking it was cool to have a doppelganger. Lorelai was indeed a convincing actress, but of course, she had years of dealing with all kinds of people, telling hundreds if not thousands of convincing lies. Lorelai then puts down the photo after examining the photo thoroughly, soon stating, "so what, you think I'm some thirty or forty-something lady posing as a teenager? Because if that's the case I think you might need a different kind of help there Detective". The detective did not look pleased by Lorelai's words, stating that no, that's not what he thought, Dustin was under the impression that maybe she was related to this person in the photo.

"Nope, looks nothing like any of my relatives, in fact, I look nothing like any of my family, perhaps I'm adopted… how could they not tell me?" Lorelai's tone sounded mostly serious leaning slightly sarcastic, but it turned all gloomy, acting like she was actually upset. Of course, she recovered a second later, giving the Decetive a smirk, very much wanting to kick her feet up next but that was all she could manage right now. Lorelai was so tired and out of it that she could barely hold a conversation, let alone move about, why did the detective have to show up and make her think?

However, before Detective Penn could ask anything further, or react to Lorelai's lack of manners, the door to the room burst open, with Lucy and Matthew standing there. Lucy was seemingly out of breath, but a look of pure fury sat on her face, glaring the detective down, while Matthew appeared relatively fine. I mean the guy looked a little grumpier than usual but it was likely Lorelai would be the only one to notice such a small change. "This questioning is over" Lucy shouted as she rushed over and wrapped her arms around her bestie, with Matthew concurring with her but not as loud. He remained by the door as the principal arrived, inquiring what the whole racket was about, clearly upset as he had "work" to do, but Lorelai knew the guy just had a stick up his ass.

Without even hearing from Lucy or Matthew, the principal demanded they go back to class or they'd get detention, but they didn't listen to his orders at all. They already had a plan in place; Lucy recorded everything on her cellphone as Matthew stated that an officer of the law was not legally allowed to question a minor without a guardian or advocate present. Matthew paused for a moment, going on to state, "I wonder how the media would react to all this... a detective showing up and questioning a student without her parents present and the school just letting it happen... and on top of that the principal of said school threatening other students for defending their friend and holding up the law... I for one believe they'd have a field day". So with that, Lorelai was freed to go to class, first demanding a late slip excusing her tardiness from first period as Mr.Renwood, her English teacher just so happened to also have a stick up his ass.
