Chapter 3 - Chapter three:Bad news

Ellen returned to the house from an ice cream shop and she saw her parents smiling.

"So, what's the good news?"She asked.

"Oh my God, Ellen this is more than good news." Mrs. Roberts said happily.

"Alright, I'm more than ready to start popping!"Said Ellen hopping.

"Okay sweetie, drum roll please. Your grandparents will be coming over this summer and don't pop yet, they are coming with someone very special. Guess who?"

"Who?"Ellen asked curiously

"Umm a little clue then. A friend, the only friend you had when you were in Chesterbrook." Ellen's heart did a somersault and her fingers began to tremble.

"Please tell me it's not...it's not...not Betty." Ellen said in a shaky voice.

"Are you okay, El." Her dad asked

"I have to..." She didn't end her sentence and headed towards the door.

"Where are you going to sweetie."

Her mom asked but she didn't turn to answer. She just opened the door and got out. She didn't know where she was going and she didn't care. She wanted to be alone. How could this be? She hadn't been in contact with Betty for nearly eight years. Isn't this supposed to be a happy moment for her? Why was she sad then? Did she feel guilty because she refused to write to Betty, or reply the letters she sent, or she never asked about her when she spoke to her grandparents, or she never returned her regards when her grandparents told her Betty sends her regards? How can she look at Betty in the face or worse stay in the same house with her the whole summer! These thoughts flooded her mind and tear drops fell from her eyes. Suddenly she clashed with someone and what seemed like books fell.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to...to make this happen." She apologized and helped the stranger pack his books. Tears began to flow.

"Roberts?"The stranger said. Ellen was astonished but she knew who it was. There was only one person in the world who called her by her surname and that was: "Josh Ryder, what a surprise."She said surprised.

"Yeah I didn't think I would meet you here. Are you okay?"He asked pointing at her tears.

"Yes I am." She tried to clean the tears with her hand but Josh offered his handkerchief. Ellen took it smiling and cleaned her tears. The handkerchief had an embroidery with his name. She tried to give him back his handkerchief but he said

"You can have it. Whatever is making you cry, I hope you smile seeing this handkerchief because it wipes your tears." Ellen smiled and Josh smiled and asked "Where are you going."

"Uhhh the library." She lied.

"I'm going there too, so let's go."

Ellen was glad to be walking with Josh. Of course, Josh was the guy she had a crush on. He had silky blonde hair, tall and well built. He played basketball in school. Although he hadn't scored much goals like Jordan klutz he was still the talk of most girls cause he was breathtakingly handsome. Forget Josh. You have a big task before you, she thought. Betty, the one who used to be her best friend in the suburbs, Betty, the one who gave her comfort when she was restless years ago, worse of all, Betty, the name she refused to mention or think about for eight years.
