RILEY'S POV.
I don't know what day it was, not that it mattered anyway. It wasn't as if I was missing any classes.
Sometimes I sat down and just hoped that things would get back to how they used to be. I wanted to go to school and laugh with my friends but I couldn't do that.
It was day one hundred and seventeen since the epidemic broke out. I had no one it was just me and as I washed my face in the sink I gasped at how much I had changed.
I was not the same girl I was three months ago. The dye on my hair had already washed out and I looked like a junkie.
I took my backpack and left the house in search of goods and other people. I was sure that I was not the only person that had survived.
My parents had turned during the first days and no matter how much I had thought that it was a joke seeing them not recognize me I knew that this wasn't just a dream or part of a game.
It was real.
I could hear grunting as I closed the front door and hoped that they couldn't hear me. I tiptoed around them but it wasn't enough and as I stepped on a branch they all turned to look at me.
It wasn't the first time that they had spotted me it had happened a lot of times and I was already used to it.
The only upside of the situation was that I didn't know which direction to run to because I could meet others by just turning the corner.
They grunted as they slowly started moving toward where I was. I looked at both sides and decided to go to the left.
I didn't have enough gun power to take them all so I had to find a way to get away from them.
I could hear my heart beat racing fast as I kept on running with no idea where I was going. I just wanted to leave.
As I turned the corner I saw a car coming my way and hoped that they would stop. These days it was so hard for someone to help you out.
Behind me, the numbers had increased. Maybe I was going to be their first meal in days but I was not ready to die like that.
I deserved to have a life if it even existed at all. Dying at sixteen had not been in my dreams at all but here I was slowly living the dream of someone else.
I stood in the middle of the road and started to wave my hands but the car did not seem to stop let alone slow down.
Was this how I was going to die?
I had fought so hard to reach where I was to just die like that. When I was sure they were going to hit me the car finally stopped.
I let out a sigh of relief as I went to the side where they had already opened the door and they drove away as the creatures chases us.
I didn't know what to call them.
There were two people in the car. A girl about my age and a guy who seemed much older than I.
"Hey ", I said as I placed my backpack on the seat next to me.
"Hey ", said the guy as he looked me up and down, "you infected ?" he asked.
"No am okay ", I said.
"What were you doing here all alone you know everyone has left town right ?", the girl asked as she turned to look at me.
"Well I could ask you the same ", I joked laughing.
"We came to take suppliers given that the stores have no one to sell to ", she said.
"Did you find anything ?", I asked her. I had gone to look for food and couldn't even make it into the stores.
"Yeah we got some things ", she said as she threw me a KitKat.
"Thank you, am Riley by the way ", I said as I opened the wrapper.
I couldn't remember the last time I had eaten a meal maybe three days ago and even if it was a KitKat I appreciated it.
"So what were you doing here all alone ?", the guy asked.
"I just have never left town and I just wanted to go out there and see if there was any sign of life ", I said as I felt the sadness creeping in.
The only reason I had stayed behind was that I was hoping that my sister would be back. She had promised she would come back but then maybe something had happened to her.
"You stayed all alone ?", he asked.
"No I stayed with my sister but she isn't around anymore ", I said.
"Ooohh sorry for your loss, we lost our mum too ", the girl said.
"No she isn't dead she just hasn't come back ", I said raising my voice a little.
I hated when people tried to patronize me and make me feel like I was waiting for someone dead.
"When did you last see her ?", the guy driving asked.
" Three months ago ", I said swallowing hard.
I knew it sounded absurd. I was waiting for someone who was probably dead but if something would have happened to her then I would have already known.
She was strong and I knew that she was out there and I was going to find her.
"Am sorry but that is a long time ago if she was still alive don't you think that she would have been back already ?", the guy asked.
"Where did she tell you she was going ?", he asked me.
"People from her work came and took her and said she would be back that's all they said ", I told him.
"What did she do for work ?", he asked.
" It doesn't matter anymore so where are you guys headed ? ", I asked as I changed the subject.
" We're going back to camp with the others ", the little girl said as she squealed.
" Am sorry others? there are more of you ? ", I asked them.
I didn't know how to survive in large groups three was already big enough for me but given that the whole town was infested with zombies I didn't have much of a choice but to tag along.
