They could hear the laughter from quite a far as they approached the camp. They knew the place was no longer safe and it was just a matter of time before they were attacked.
They couldn't wait for that though. They did not have enough weapons to fight them Incase they came in large numbers.
Once they reached the camp people looked at them with a look of worry. Even without being told they knew what had happened just by the blood on Glen and Riley's hands.
They all stopped what they were doing and followed them toward Glen's truck where they mostly met for meetings.
There was a look of worry on everyone's faces and it broke Glen's heart. If she could do anything to help them she would just to see them happy but there wasn't much to do.
"So you all know we went to see if we could find a house where we could all stay ", she said as she pulled a chair and took a seat.
"The bad news is that we didn't find any and we were attacked so that means sooner or later the zombies will reach our camp ", she said.
" What is the good news ? ", asked Aubrey one of the members.
" Sadly I don't have any good news but at least we are alive ", Glen said chuckling but everyone was quiet.
" I may have some good news I don't know if it counts as good news though ", said Riley.
" Everything that involves living right now is good news what is it ? ", Glen asked her as everyone turned to look at Riley.
" Well I know a place where we can get all the weapons we need from guns, bows, and all the armor we need ", said Riley as she took in a deep breath
" I know most of you don't know how to use weapons but we can train you, everyone needs to know how to defend themselves ", she said as she waited for the people to pick in.
"How did you know of this place ?", Aubrey asked her.
"My sister used to work there and she took me there once so I know that there still are weapons there ", said Riley.
She knew that there were higher chances that the weapons had all been taken but she was willing to try it's not like they had many choices in the matter though.
"I don't it's safe if we have guns what if one of us hurts someone ?", asked Harry a man who was old enough to be Riley's grandfather.
She sometimes wondered how he had managed to be alive. He seemed quick and didn't look more than fifty even though he was seventy-five
"Well we need the guns to protect ourselves unless you have another option here then I think we will just have to stick to guns ", said Riley.
" Who will teach us how to use the guns ? ", Aubrey asked.
" I will teach you pretty good at it I used to teach the other veterans ", said Harry.
She now understood why he looked so fit. She didn't understand how she hadn't thought of it before. He sure looked like a veteran.
"So then we set off in the morning and on our way maybe we could look at some houses where we can stay ", said Glen.
" Yeah I think that would be good and maybe we can get some food on the way ", said Riley.
" Okay then Riley Aubrey and Harry, will come with me ", Glen said.
" Okay ", said both Aubrey and Harry.
The people dispersed back to their tents and Glen was left with Riley. She pulled her chair towards where she was seated.
"What kind of work did your sister do? At first, I would have thought she was a police officer but they do not use bows ", said Glen.
"Are you sure they don't use bows ? ", Riley asked her chuckling.
" Yeah am sure and I know she was pretty good because I know she trained you and if you are this good I wonder what about her ", said Glen.
" She was pretty good. She was a hunter ", said Riley as she laid back on her chair.
"Ooohh okay, I didn't know they also used guns ", said Glen chuckling.
"Neither did I," said Riley from that statement, Glen knew that she didn't want the conversation to continue.
Maybe a sister was a hot topic that she did not want to talk about and she would respect that and not push further.
"I'll go see what they are making for supper ", said Glen as she stood up and left.
Riley was lost in her thoughts. She had never had the time to think about the possibility of her sister's death
She knew that her sister was tough and could survive anything but what if she couldn't survive this?
What if she was already dead?
She was just living in an illusion thinking that she was alive. If she had been alive then maybe she would have come back for her a long time ago.
She had to come to terms with the truth that maybe she hadn't survived. It was time for her to move on instead of living a lie.
She had to be strong for herself but then again she had nothing to live for. Life was meaningless at this point.
She had nothing and no one.
Before things were different because she had always thought that Ophelia would come back but as the days passed that hope died.
She had waited for three months hoping that she would be back but in those three months, all that had happened was her fighting for her life more than ten times.
She was tired and exhausted from living. Life wasn't supposed to be that hard.
As she looked at the people in her camp she wondered why they were so happy when they were in the middle of an apocalypse.
They were not supposed to smile or be happy but unlike her, they all had people to live for.
She was all alone.
