There is just the sound of heavy steps in the hallway. Mia's frustration can be easily made out by the noise that her shoes are making on the wooden floor. It was not an easy decision to come to New York after a silly little boy who is on the seven clouds. Mia is disappointed in herself which she often is. She has however never once felt disgusted in her life but weirdly today, she also feels disgusted with herself. She hated how her heart fluttered when Carys looked into her eyes.
She shakes away all the thoughts from her brain when she reaches the doorstep of her new apartment. The city is foreign to Mia and it is also taking a toll on her along with that weird Carys guy who refuses to let his guard down. Today was the first time that Mia interacted with him and she already hates him. She has not hated someone this quickly.
The keys in her hands jiggle and she finally puts them in the keyhole to open up a new world for herself.
The wooden door creaks and then she pushes the door to open it further. A weird noise is coming from the kitchen which is directly on the right at the end of the three-step hallway that is now exposed to Mia's vision. Mia hangs the keys on her left on the wall and takes slow steps towards the kitchen. The noise gets louder and she immediately grips her bag as a weapon, swinging it behind her shoulder to gain the momentum needed in case of crisis.
"You are home?" A sweet voice then says and Mia takes a sigh of relief as soon as she sees the person's back.
"It is you, Samantha," Mia says and puts her bag down, chuckling lightly.
"Of course, it is me. Who else are you expecting?" The girl that Mia recognises as Samantha speaks as she wipes her hand on the paper towel. She then turns around and leans on the kitchen counter. "You feel real now." She says and inspects Mia up and down.
"You shouldn't sneak up on me, okay? I would have gotten a heart attack. I thought of hundreds of people who would sneak up in my house and kill me." Mia says and walks towards the refrigerator to quench her thirst.
"Or maybe I shouldn't sneak up because there is a possibility of you killing me with your school bag." Samantha laughs and her laugh is exactly the same as Mia remembers. Among the sunflower fields, Mia remembers Samantha and her running up and catching each other and then giggling till their stomachs started hurting.
Samantha might have noticed Mia travelling through the memories, "I missed you." She says and closes the distance between her and Mia. Mia happily accepts the blonde and takes her in her embrace as if she belonged in between her arms.
"How was school?" Samantha pulls herself away from Mia and asks. Mia seems a little frustrated and Samantha notices this right away after all she has known Mia all her life.
"Yeah, that," Mia says. She clicks her tongue and walks over to the couch right in front of the kitchen. She lays down and closes her eyes.
Samantha slowly walks over and sits right in front of the tired figure across the white marble coffee table. "I told you it will be difficult."
Mia peeks at Samantha and scoffs, "Nothing is difficult for me."
"Yeah, I can see that. I can see that it is uncomfortable for you. Mia, life in New York or life in a Business School is not for you, darling." Samantha has a hint of sympathy in her voice which makes Mia sit up straight.
There are a lot of emotions that are built up inside Mia but God forbid she shows any of them, not even to Samantha who has been by her side forever. Even if it has been a dreadful day, even if she just escaped death, Samantha never saw Mia cry and even right now Samantha is sure that Mia wouldn't open up to her. She wouldn't admit that her decision was wrong.
"It was just the first day, sugar." Sugar is what Mia calls Samantha.
"I know…" Samantha takes a deep breath, "but you know how dangerous it is to go undercover as a student in a business school just so you can study your target. You should have let Dad handle it, Mia."
Mia shifts in her seat, clearly she is reaching her limit and Samantha knows that.
"You don't need to come at me." Mia finally says.
"I am not coming at you-" Samantha defends herself but her pleading is left unheard because of the door which opens on their left. Both of them look over with caution in their eyes. Years of living in a mansion full of guards have somehow made their survival instincts even stronger. It is not that the apartment is not guarded, it is very guarded with David living right next door and more of their guards deployed on the same floor as them but rule number one in every mafia family is to stay on your toes at all times and everyone in the Serpents abide by the rule. Mia is the head of Serpents after all.
"Ladies," Tony steps inside the apartment with glee in his voice but he stops right by the kitchen feeling like he has interrupted something. He feels like he has stepped into a bubble which can burst only by his mere presence. Although he has always felt like this, whenever he is pushed in between the two besties, he always feels out of the place.
"Did I disturb the make-out session? I will leave if you guys want some privacy." He laughs and puts the brown packet on the kitchen counter. Mia immediately ran over to the counter and peeked inside the bag.
"Chocolate Donuts?" She asks and looks up at Tony with shiny eyeballs.
"Chocolate Donuts." Tony softly replies. Mia digs in the bag and pulls out the doughnuts while Samantha just looks at her brother staring at Mia lovingly.
"Leave some for me," Samantha yells and hops over towards the counter too. For a while, there is nothing left for the three of them, just the sweet sugary desert and their laughs.
