Chapter 4 - Chapter 3

"Hey! Look here, look here!" Cora shoved her videocamera into my face.

"Dude, keep it away. I don't like close up." I blocked my face with a soft pillow. She laughed and climbed on top, locking my leg with hers.

"Just a glimpse, come on, don't be shy." She tried pulling off the pillow but I didn't budge.

"Nope."

Cora was like a breath of fresh air among all the chaos that was going on. I never understood why she was always cheerful but it always helped with my mood so no complaints there. She placed the camera on bedside table and snatched the pillow off me.

"Hey!" I lifted myself up on my elbows.

She chuckled, "Got ya." I then realised that her face was way too close to mine. Some unknown expression flickered in her eyes. I immediately pushed her off and grabbed the pillow. Her expression changed when she saw my lips curl into a wicked smile.

"Violet!"

"Pillow fight!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I picked up my phone. It had been ringing like crazy for like an hour.

"Hello?"

"What are you doing?"

Chase.

"Uh nothing I guess." I picked at the lint on my shorts waiting for his response.

"Come down."

"Down?"

"Yeah." I could hear his smile through the phone. I jumped off the bed and ran towards the window. Looking down, I spotted him right away. He had his usual black leather jacket on and was waiting on his bike. His beautiful harley. I hung up and immediately put on my jacket. It was nice living with Cora. Her house barely had any security. No one was here watching my every moment. Her dad was a simple dealer of ammunitions and stuff.

I looked over to where she was sleeping. Yeah no use waking her up. Putting on my shoes, I made my way down.

"Why are you here?"

Instead of answering he just shoved a helmet in my direction. I shrugged. With the help of his shoulder I climbed behind me.

"Hold on tight."

I rolled my eyes.

"Don't roll your eyes at me."

I stared at him with my mouth slightly hung open, "How did you know?"

Laughing he turned around to ruffle my hair, "I know you more than you know yourself."

I slapped his hand away, "Dont touch my hair." I growled and put on the helmet. He slowly revved up the engine and took off into the wind. My arms instinctively wrapped around his waist.

"Slow down. " I screamed but it was barely audible in the wind. We zipped past the traffic and reached the isolated part of the town. That's when I realised where we were headed.

The beach.

We had spent many summer nights on that beach with our friends. If I can call them friends. Our fates were tied together because of being in the same business. My arms loosened around his waist as we came to a stop. He watched me struggle for a few minutes before helping me get off my helmet.

"How do you manage to make the simplest task difficult?"

I stepped on his foot and smiled watching his face contort with pain. Taking off my shoes I ran towards the ocean. Burying my toes into the soft, wet sand, I admired the view. It never gets old. No matter how many times I looked at moonlight spilling on the ocean surface, it was still pretty as ever to me. The salty smell of the ocean tickled my nose, bringing me a wave of nostalgia. I felt him sit beside me.

"Its good to see you smile again."

"Thanks for bringing me here." I met his eyes which were glimmering in the moonlight. He looked like an angel but I had seen him stab a man to death not even a month ago. I knew what his job entitled him to do but seeing him actually do it was another story.

"Hey chase."

"Hmm?"

"Why are you still here? You're free to go. Your boss isn't there anymore. I mean I know you got enrolled into college to protect me but this is a geat opportunity, you can do something-"

"Violet." Chase stopped my rambling mid way which I was glad for, because honestly, I had no idea where I was going with this.

"There are still some things you don't know."

"Are you going to tell me then?" I looked over to him. There was guilt written all over his face. I need to know. What is everyone hiding from me?

"I can't. I gave my word."

"To whom?"

Silence ensued. There was a change in the air. It felt heavy.

"Is Hunter keeping something from me too?"

There was a brief pause before Chase spoke up, "You can't trust him. You can't trust anyone." There was a hint of anger in his voice.

"And you? Can I trust you?"

"Its up to you, but I can promise I won't let anything happen to you. Ever." Even after seeing the determination in his eyes I felt like I couldn't trust him. The ocean now felt suffocating and the waves were just noise to my ears.

"Take me back."
