Chapter 1 - It happened

In the corner of a room, Thomas Clapton, a twelve year old boy, sat with his eyes closed. Trying to keep himself from weeping and pouring his heart out. Convincing himself to be strong and just carry on somehow. Opposite to my dear friend sat I on a broken bookshelf consisting of torn and crumbled up pages with God knows what written on them. I wished I could say the words to console him, the words that would make everything else not matter. I wish I could get up and scream that it was gonna be alright eventually. How, I wanted with every fiber in my being to just make it all end. But how? the question was how. But I could not, to me everything else mattered.

Thirty minutes past five in the evening, that young boy started being anxious. I looked at him and prayed to God Almighty and begged within my heart to make it all go away. I could not stand my precious Thomas witness his world coming to an end. Thomas kept murmuring: "We are all going to die- just going to die". I never was afraid to die. Truth be told, I had never lived and felt so what better would I have known? I kept thinking how my faith in God could bring an end to his and everyone else's misery. All of a sudden, I glanced out the window and it was dark now. It was night and darkness was upon us. How ironic I thought to myself. The room as if it were empty but a naked light of a candle shedding light in the room. This was my faith not bowing infront of the reality of the world. The light and the dark my friends.

In the sound of silence, a voice broke, a familiar yet comforting voice. It was coming from out of the window. Thomas went by the window and as he looked out, I saw a little smile grow upon his face. It turned out the voice was of his friend, Arthur. But, to my surprise that smile faded within seconds as he muttered the horrific words: "They are here"

With these words said Arthur went and Thomas sat once again with the same look upon his face. With hands up, he prayed to the God to make it all better. The young jewish boy cried and came towards me. Sitting together reminded me of the good-old times when he would come back tired and restless from school and just come up to me and talk. He would talk all of his problems and how his day went and I in return would listen and stay silent. Wherever he went, I went. I was his friend in the toughest of times and we all know what they say "A friend in need is a friend indeed". I thought to myself: "Those were the times and how times have changed" Thomas grabbed me all of a sudden and went downstairs in the kitchen. There sat his parents, Edward and Lily. What exceptional parents they were. They loved Thomas with all of their heart. Thomas left me near the counter and went upto his parents and hugged them tightly. It was out of pure-fear but at the same time comforting to know that his entire universe was still intact.

A knock at the door was heard, the entire family went silent and confusion could be read within their faces. Edward moved forward and opened the door. A strong voice said "We are here for what we desire" Edward replied "We have it, just have this and leave us alone"

There were two men dressed up. One had a scar on his right face while the other held a gun. They kept screaming the cursed word "GELD! GELD!" It meant money in German. These guys were Nazis and they had come to collect money from their prisoners for their selfish desries. I was in the corner witnessing all of this and somehow I regret and self loathed myself, I could not do anything. I was helpless and had no will to do. Edward gave them a bag of money and smirks could be seen on the faces of those horrible men. As they were about to leave, one of them asked Edward in a jokingly manner "If I could have your wife too?"

They laughed and looked at Lily in a devious manner. She felt worthless and broke down to the floor in tears. As they were about to leave, in a moment of desperation she uttered the words "You bastards won't ever get away with this!"

The whole room went silent and Edward stared at Lily as if she had committed a sin. Those two Nazis turned over in anger. Wasting no time, one of them shot her through her head. Edward rushed over to her defense but was too late. Another bullet was shot and this time the victim was Edward. Just like that, in seconds, two innocent people were killed mercilessly. The blood stained my face and shirt, I zoned out for a minute asking myself if there really was a God? Maybe there is, but, how could he let this happen. The two men left and as the sound of the door closing was heard, all hell broke loose. I could not look at Thomas, but I could feel the emotions. I felt the emotions! The young boy sat in between the bodies of those who had loved him. With blood all over his hands, he went silent. He came up to me and said in a soft voice: "Moo, is there a God?"

Those words filled me and the candle went out as the cold wind blew. Imagine your world being taken from you in seconds and for what? For nothing. How war can change lives is unreal. Only two survived, Him and I.
