Chapter 9 - The Core

"W, what the heck is this?" Takeo stammered. looking around, he could see nothing but blood and destruction everywhere.

The place was spacious and large. Rid of brightness, as there were barely light inside. It smells pungent with rustic blood. The walls, floor and ceiling were cracked. As well as the mechanical equipments and devices this place seems to had were now either split into two, or blown to pieces.

Takeo knelt down, and examined the dried blood near him.

"Look at that—" Tao said, pointing towards the chambers. "This is a laboratory."

"Yeah, subject containers." Takeo replied, standing up. "There's only one group I know who could have had all these around here. It's beneath a church no less."

"Yeah, Union." said Tao.

Cadiz Etrama Di Raizel walked forward and went into the center of this spacious laboratory. He stood there silently, as if trying to feel out something.

"Still," said Tao. "I've been working for the Union for many years before and I didn't even know we had one in this place. The union laboratory in Paris should be beneath the Eiffel Tower. How about you, Takeo? "

"This is news for me too."

" Figures. However, I can't see Frankenstein anywhere."

"He was here." Raizel Spoke.

"Eh?"

"I could sense the Aura of the Dark Spear emanating all around here." said Raizel. "Everywhere."

"Does that mean the Boss fought here?" Tao asked.

"Yeah, that would be likely." replied Takeo. "The blood was dried, but it's still fairly new. Probably around a week ago."

"Then, if the boss were here a week ago, how come I received a signal from him yesterday, originating here?"

"I don't know, let's continue investigating." said Takeo. "Raizel-nim, please wait here, well go to the rooms one by one."

[Welcome!] said a grim voice somewhere. It was deep, unrefined and harsh.

"What's that?"

"It's a recording." said Tao, looking down on a small active screen on a table.

[You must be Frankenstein's associate, I presume. I can't see you. By the time you reached here, I and my associates would be long gone. Still, allow me to introduce myself. I am the core. Hello, and Good-bye!]

At that instant, a quick, bright flash of light occured. It happened so fast that everything went white in less than a second. Then—

BOOM!!!

It was deafening...

'Here we are, Tom, in front of the very steps of the famous Sacré-Cœur, where a massive explosion had just occured 20 minutes ago.' said one of the many reporters that gathered.

'Respondents said that the explosion began beneath the building. They could not, however, point out exactly where as the flame still rages on the lower floors.' said another reporter.

'Every person inside, save for a few priests that were in meeting below during the event, made it out alive. Fortunately, the explosion didn't reach the main floor. Survivors said that it was as if an earthquake occured.' spoke another reporter. 'Victims are being treated as we speak. They're deafened and disoriented. Some are wounded by the panes and glasses broken by the shockwave, despite that, medical personnel said they'll be okay.'

The place was in a state of uproar. People were panicking, some crying and scared, rightly so.

People immediately cry for help, and respondents came as fast as they could. They immediately evacuated the area and rescue the ones inside the building. Firefighters arrived and prevented the fire from coming up and spreading. Ambulance came, and Sirens filled the scene. Reporters were fast, and so were the onlookers who couldn't bear not being able to see it for themselves firsthand.

It was nothing short of chaos.
