Chapter 36 - The heated battles continue

Velena slammed into the ground. He was being pinned down by a monster.

The monster thrashed around trying to get at his face. Velena pushed the monster off himself and killed it with his ax. The monsters kept coming.

Velena's ax was stained with their blood. Ephron stood back and watched all of this unfold. "It's interesting watching you fight," Ephron said in a bored voice.

Velena slashed a monster in half and replied, "Then fight me, you kid." "No, no I don't think I will," Ephron said. A tentacle came out of nowhere and stabbed Velena in the back.

He severed the tentacle and sliced the offending monster in half. The wound healed instantaneously. Velena was getting exhausted.

The wounds that some of the monsters had left on him were extremely painful and slowed his reaction time. A monster came from behind Velena and tackled him to the ground.

Velena raised a glowing vine from the ground that pushed the monster off of him. Velena raised another vine, using it as a platform to gain height over all the monsters.

Velena twisted the two vines together and made a monster of her own. "I thought I told you that wouldn't work," Ephron laughed.

The monsters swarmed around Velena's construct. However, the infection didn't take place.

"This monster's got a sheck," Velena taunted. The monster let out a fearsome roar and swiped the monsters at its feet.

"Cover me," Velena said as he jumped at Ephron. Velena took a swing at Ephron that he was able to dodge.

A monster hit Velena on his side from the right. Velena swung his ax around, slicing the monster in half.

Velena jumped up and tried to bring the ax down onto Ephron's head. Ephron moved to the side to avoid the hit. Monsters swarmed up to Velena's position.

He took a swing at them, trying to kill them in one blow. His ax bounced off the hard sheck that the monsters had seemingly just materialized.

The monsters didn't flinch at Velena's attempt to kill them and began trying to kill him. What the heck, Velena thought.

"My monsters have a sheck too," Ephron sneered. Velena jumped away from the armored monsters and began to rethink his strategy.

The monsters were closing in and the creature Velena had summoned was fighting a ways away from him.

Then, the idea hit Velena like a rocket. Velena put his hand to the ground and summoned three ethereal creatures.

The three creatures had a grayish glow to them and sported axes.

"Hold them off," Velena said. The three creatures immediately rushed to the armored monsters and began to engage them in open combat.

Velena leaped over his line of soldiers and slashed his ax at Ephron.

Ephron moved to the side once again to avoid the hit. This time, however, Velena was ready. He pivoted on his foot and slashed Ephron's midsection with his ax.

Blood poured out of the long laceration in Ephron's flesh. Ephron screamed.

He had never felt pain like this before. "You little kid!" he shouted. Velena jumped back. Blood dripped from the blade of his ax. "Now, ghost!!!" he shouted.

A silvery humanoid appeared behind him and took the blood from the ax. The creatures that were fighting the monsters began to radiate a gray aura.

Ephron watched in shock as the three creatures struck down his armored monsters. "Curse you," he said, finally falling to the ground as he succumbed to his injuries.

Velena watched as the monsters melted into a mass of flesh and began to cover Ephron's corpse.

The monsters sounded like they were consuming him. Velena turned away as the squelching noises became too much for him.

"Don't worry Benjamin, I'm coming," Velena said, looking off into space.

Benjamin was knocked to the ground. He had arrows piercing his arms, legs, and parts of his chest.

"You know, for Beelzebubs son, you're weak as heck," Azriel said, panting. Blood spilled from Benjamin's wounds as he stared at the ground.

Azriel readied an arrow and pointed it at Benjamin's head. Benjamin knew it wouldn't end for him, but it could for Corey.

"I'm sure lord Beelzebub will understand your death," Azriel faintly said to himself. Broken War lay several feet away from Benjamin. If he could just reach it, he might have a chance.

Azriel took notice of Benjamin eyeing his sword and plunged an arrow into his shoulder. "Don't even think about it," Azriel snarled.

He seemed to make up his mind after this because he drew back his arrow and fired. The moment seemed to stretch out into eternity.

The arrow had just left the string and was hurtling straight toward his eye. Benjamin closed them, not knowing what to expect next.

Benjamin heard a loud cracking sound and he instinctively opened his eyes. The arrow was lodged in a piece of glass.

The glass was cracked and only remained intact for a few more seconds before shattering into pieces.

Benjamin was completely taken by surprise, with an expression that surely mirrored Azriel's.

Azriel stared at the place where the arrow and the glass had been. He looked up and scanned the surrounding area.

Benjamin followed suit, looking for his would-be savior. As Benjamin looked around he realized that something important was missing.

This thing was the only reason he had been called out here in the first place. Benjamin heard a loud thwack and turned around to see Azriel flying.

Azriel landed several yards away and rolled a few more feet before coming to a stop. "Don't worry, I've got you," Corey said, uncloaking himself next to Benjamin.

Corey's aura was more radiant than Benjamin had ever seen in his life. Corey held beside him a spear that he had forged using the remnants of his old scythe and a new spearhead.

Corey began to remove the arrows from Benjamin's body, an experience that was quite painful for Benjamin. After Corey was through he turned to face Azriel.

"Stay here and heal up. I'm going to finish this," Corey said, rushing off towards Azriel. Azriel had just gotten up when Corey's fist collided with the side of his face. He was sent flying through the air.

Azriel righted himself and blasted a huge amount of energy at Corey. The energy rippled and distorted the space around it as it rushed towards Corey. Corey was unfazed.

He threw his spear through the air and watched as it passed through the energy. Corey teleported to the spear as it reached Azriel.

Azriel leaned to the side to avoid it but couldn't avoid Corey's foot slamming his head into the ground. Corey teleported his spear to his hand and tried to slam it down into Azriel.

Azriel created an energy barrier that pushed Corey off him. However, Azriel couldn't get a break.

Corey jumped up and rapidly jabbed downwards. Azriel's barrier was able to repel the attacks but Azriel noticed that it was starting to crack.

Corey's attacks were relentless until he was beginning to break through the shield. With one final thrust, Corey pierced the shield.

His spear went straight through Azriel's midsection. Azriel grabbed the spear handle just as Corey twisted. Azriel screamed in pain as the spear twisted his intestines.

Corey wrenched the spear out and landed on the ground back in front of Benjamin. Benjamin's wounds still hadn't healed yet, so he couldn't get up. "Nice one Corey," Benjamin said, smiling. "Thanks," Corey replied. Corey tried to help Benjamin up, but a massive fist hit Corey in the face.

Corey was knocked back onto the ground where he instantly righted himself. Azriel was standing with blood coming out of his gut and mouth.

He was panting and had a deranged look in his eye. "I was going to spare you, but now I have to make you pay," Azriel shouted.

"Talk is cheap," Corey said, whipping around his spear. Azriel's body was inside of a construct made entirely of energy. The energy matched the color of his aura, a blue-gray.

Azriel punched Corey, a devastating attack. Corey spat up blood as the huge fist connected with his chest. Corey skidded along the ground and did a backflip to right himself.

Azriel was already lunging for him, his hands closed into fists. Corey avoided the first punch and thrust his spear directly at Azriel's chest.

The spear stopped at the thick layer of energy that surrounded Azriel. Azriel grabbed the spear and threw it to the side before punching Corey once again.

Corey hit the ground and tried to get back up, but Azriel was already on top of him. Corey formed a mirror shield to try and block the onslaught.

Azriel didn't care, slamming his fists into the shield over and over. The attack was so powerful that it was pushing Corey deeper and deeper into the ground while crushing him at the same time.

Azriel stopped punching and began to use his hands to crush Corey under his shield.

Benjamin couldn't move. His wounds had not yet fully healed. However, he couldn't just sit there and watch his best friend get killed.

"Hey," Benjamin yelled. Azriel turned to face him while not releasing any of the pressure he was putting on Corey.

"Shut up, I'll deal with you later," Azriel sneered. Benjamin was shaking. A glowing black crown was forming around his head.

Benjamin slowly stood up. "I hope you wrote your will ahead of time ," Benjamin said, a murderous look in his eyes.
