Chapter 1 - Waking up late

It was a warm afternoon, the sun shone upon a white brick house. This house had multiple decorative wooden boards under the windows. This, along with the various plants scaling up the walls, gave the house a comfy and vintage sort of vibe. The windows of this house in particular were all slightly ajar, this was due to the heat, as well as the need of airing out the house. The need to air out the house could be credited to the fact they'd just come back from a week's trip to the Bahamas. The house's air was apparently "too stale and musty smelling" according to the lady of the household's standards.

Although, not everyone agreed with this. Namely, the husband and the son, one of them even wanted to go against this decision, due to fear of bugs coming in and causing an infestation. However, they were unable to voice their opinions as the mother kept cutting them off mid-sentence and debunking their concerns. At the end of their long and arduous struggle, also known as less than five minutes of pleading, they got bored, gave up and in the end could only accept the outcome.

The atmosphere in the house was peaceful, the only sound to be heard was the rustling of leaves from the trees, and the occasional sounds of cars passing by outside. However, the peaceful calm was broken in a split second when a loud, shrill voice called out in the silence.

"Son! Come downstairs!" After a few moments of not receiving a reply, the woman's voice called out again, "Josh! Get down here! I told you, we're visiting my friend today! Don't tell me you forgot!"

After a few more moments the woman began to get somewhat annoyed and called out again, "Don't tell me you're not up yet! What is it, almost one in the afternoon? Are you kidding me?!" She sighed before calling out yet again, "Can you even hear me?!"

The woman had just gotten into the house, no one had been home since this morning, but she hadn't expected that without anyone to wake him up, her son would sleep in. Such behaviour was unusual for him, as most of the time he woke up early. The time at which he woke up varied from the more normal times of 5 am to 7 am, although sometimes he'd happen to get up at the crack of dawn and come bother them.

When he woke up, he would sneak into her and her husband's bedroom and would proceed to climb onto the bed and jump on them both respectively until they got up and began playing with him. Or at the very least, gave him something interesting to do to pass the time.

If anything, the woman had to talk to him about not waking up so early, so him being asleep still, at this time, was somewhat shocking to her. She almost couldn't believe it, she quickly slid off her shoes and climbed up the stairs hastily.

When she'd reached the door with the hanging board, which read "Joshua's Room" she hesitated for a moment, before knocking and barging into the room. The door forcefully hit the wall, instantly waking up the little boy who was sleeping soundly just moments ago.

The woman looked at the little boy and allowed him to rub the sleep out of his eyes and catch his bearings before talking to him again. When his eyes had cleared and he looked at her, she continued from what she was shouting about downstairs.

"Josh, hurry up and get ready." she sighed, "I've told you all week to remember to be on time for today. How ironic, the one day you fail to wake up early, or at all, is the day I tell you to wake up early for."

"Yes, mummy, sorry…" the small child said feebly, he hung his head and frowned before getting up to go change. He walked from the bed to the cabinet, which was located on the opposite side of the room. He quickly grabbed the first complete outfit he could find and hurried to place it on the bed.

He then rushed to the bathroom, he didn't have one connected to his bedroom so he had to use the shared one. He hurriedly brushed his teeth and washed his small face before going back to his room. As he walked, small droplets of water dripped from his hands and fringe onto the floor, leaving a little trail of water which led to his room.

He opened the door gently, careful as to not damage the door or the wall, before rushing to the bed to get changed. The outfit he had changed into was a blue t-shirt with a picture of Thomus the Bankengine, he also wore black shorts and plain white socks that went up to his knees.

He opened the door and walked through, he was wondering if he'd forgotten anything in his rush. As he was just about to leave the room and the door behind him was closing, he remembered the jacket he kept specially in his room. He instantly pushed his hand behind him, reopening the closing door and went in to open the cabinet once again. He had to search through almost all the draws before finding the jacket he was looking for.

It was a grey zip-up jacket, the type you'd find in Gape. Except it wasn't branded, however, he loved it nonetheless. It had been a present from his aunt from when she'd gone to America on vacation. He'd never gone with his family and had wanted to go for quite some time, especially so after he heard his classmate talking about it. The way they were saying so many amazing things about America made him somewhat jealous and he also couldn't wait to go to the place someday.

With his favourite jacket in hand, the little boy rushed down the stairs, although it was hard and might be somewhat dangerous, he went down two steps at a time with his little legs. Thankfully he didn't fall or slip on his way down.

His mother had been waiting for him the past ten minuets and had already changed back into her shoes, she smiled at the child.

"Dear, let me hold the jacket as you put on your shoes."

"Mhm." He replied whist half handing half shoving the jacket into her arms.

He quickly slid on his trainers, and put on his coat with the aid of his mother, they then both walked out of the front door, the woman locked the door on their way out and they then headed to her friends house.
