Remembering how her father had refused Fred from stepping into their house that day and knowing how adamant he was when he takes a decision, she unclasped her hands and sat properly on her seat. She didn't turn to look at Fred with his steadfast gaze on her until she had locked in the seatbelt. Something within her told her that the only way she could give Fred all her attention and get to pick everything he said without reacting promptly or stupidly, was for her to be restrained in her seat.
Fred did not say a word until she was done with what she was doing. He thought his seatbelt was a chain, a hindrance that might not only make him uncomfortable regardless of the air conditioning, but also get him fumbling or spewing out gibberish in meaningless syllables. His hand held firm the steering wheel again. It could help him now. He could easily bury his nails into the leather covering when it gets difficult to put his thoughts into words. The covering could help cover his anxiety and bashfulness.
'Okay...'. He turned abruptly to her side. She had crossed her legs with interlocking fingers resting on her knee. Fred smiled. Good that she still held her decorum in high regards, because what she said in the restaurant about her dropping her royal way of life had turned turmoils within him. 'So?. You were saying?'. Her voice resounded in the car again.
Yeah!. Concerning that, he would have to stop getting carried away with his thoughts when he looks at her, before she gets the wrong impression of his stares, not to forget, she had seen him as a pervert resulting to the issues between them.
'How are you?'. His voice as a low as it could.
'I'm fine and you?'. Her face was all smiles as she answered him, asking him back in return. She felt relieved. The talk had begun.
Fred looked at her for a while. There was a reluctancy in his eyes that met her gaze. She got distracted when she saw his jaw moved. It was like he wanted to say something but had to have a rethink if it.
Diva kept her still and tried matching his scrutinizing gaze. Yes, the once hesitant look had suddenly turned perusal. Looking deep into his eyes while his searched hers, she observed something else. A mixture.
He looked like he wanted to say something but had to browse her face to know if it would be okay to say it. Or was it that he wanted to decipher a major thing about her by merely looking at her face?. She coughed when his gaze became intense and turned away from him. Whatever it was he was looking for, she was at least glad he did not add his heat and fierceness to it.
'How have you been fairing since your mother's death, Diva?'. Fred noted that she had misinterpreted his question with her rushed answer, so he went straight this time.
Diva froze. Nothing seemed to move around her, even the fly that flew past her was completely ignored. She was momentarily struck by the realization of Fred's question.
Her eyes stung with a lone tear falling freely down her cheek.
How much of the pain has she been caging in?. When last did she cry over her mother's death. Not very long. He was asking after her state of mind and she was taking it too hard. She needs to be strong and not cry. If she wants her to avenge her mother's death, she needs to be strong. Was this not her undercovered plan?. Her mother's killer was within the border of this kingdom, the Prophetess had told her. She needs to be strong.
'I've been fairing very well'. She stated as she faced Fred, determined to look away from the pain. She had been acting too weak since she came, getting clouded in the memories and thoughts of her mother and now that he had asked, she was reminded of her main agenda. How futile her plan would be if she buried herself in the pains!. Now she needs to act up. A lot of emotions coming in from here and there, she have to stop them now before they control her.
