Chereads / The Magians: Resurgence / Chapter 3 - A New Start

Chapter 3 - A New Start

This world was called Newborn Earth. It was not an exaggeration, and the name was decided by The Olympian Emperor four to five thousand years ago at the end of the Dark Emperor era. It was the start of a new era as the term Magian began to emerge.

Magians were humans who had awakened their superpower through a dream world called Somnia. After the fall of the Dark Emperor, Olympian Empire took over his heritage of the ancient ruin and started to study the Glyphs of the Origin carved into its wall under the ground. This was the forerunner of knowledge related to Magian on this day.

A decade later, The Book of Origin was established to explain the phenomenon since the dream world started to appear inside peculiar people's minds. Although more than half of the Glyphs of the Origin had been destroyed, it was still lying a good foundation of scientific study to discover the root of magic power.

The former Jake was not fond of history subjects, so he did not know much about it. At least, he knew that people who opened their inner dream world didn't mean anything if they don't awaken their psychomagic. It was all matters in this society from the old days until the present. Strong people with strong psychomagic gained privilege in many fields, and the weak ones became more ordinary than ever.

"Wait a minute," Jake roared his thought while his vision observed a porcelain shard of the sink on his hand. "Did I just break it with my bare hand?" Jake muttered in disbelief.

As his mind started to wander, his ear caught a tingling feeling. It was caused by the sound of faint footsteps. Jake couldn't process how can be he heard the footsteps because it was from the front yard, normal people shouldn't be able to hear it. 'Is this part of my power?'

Jake wanted to go into deep thinking, analyzing his awakened power, but the current situation didn't let him to. He realized that he had to secure his bathroom. Certainly, he wouldn't let anyone know about this incident. Jake walked out and locked the door from the outside using the doorknob mechanism. As the footsteps got closer, Jake jumped on his bed to pretend that he was sleeping.

He rolled to the edge of the bed to find a comfortable position. However, Jake's jaw dropped after seeing the wooden floor beside his bed shattered, and there was a hole in the concrete below the wooden floor.

'Holy shit! How the fuck is there a hole on the floor?'

Luckily, it didn't do significant damage as he lived on the second floor. Thanks to that, he hadn't been confronted by his neighbors last night. But still, it was a serious problem having a hole in the floor. Being panic-stricken, Jake leaped and dragged the carpet from the kitchen to cover the broken floor, hearing the footsteps getting closer.

Jake sighed relief but his throat became thirsty. He walked towards the silvery fridge with a black thick column straight down on the left side. Jake opened the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water. Gulping from the bottle, he got back to his bed and took a sit.

Just a moment after he sat on the side of his bed, the bell rang out, followed by a soft feminine voice. Jake was mesmerized by the bell sound, it was not a typical long-buzzing tone like on his apartment in the earth, but more like a melodic one.

"Jake, are you awake?" asked the person outside.

Jake knew who she was from his inherited memory. Her name was Chloe Winter, the only friend he had. They had become best friends since childhood. Moreover, Jake had been lived with the Winter family after his mother got married again because of the request of Jake's mother.

At that time, Harrison Rowland–Jake's step-dad, didn't have authority over Rowland's family yet, that was the reason why he asked Jake to stay away. Frankly, Harrison didn't want his family to knew that he married a widow considering it would damage his reputation. And for Erina's sake, Harrison even bought Jake a house and provided him several maids to take care of him.

However, Erina–Jake's mother, didn't want to spoil Jake and think that growing up without parental love would affect him in the future. Fortunately, Erina was still in contact with one of his deceased husband's close friends, Henry Winter.

Thankfully, Henry gladly accepted the request to take care of little Jake since Henry and his wife had a baby too. A brother figure would complete their family causes his three years old baby was a girl. It can be said that Jake was part of the Winter family since he was four.

And Chloe Winter was the younger sister he should be taken care of, but it looked like reversed. Unlike Jake, she was a dependable girl. He could do homework and literal home works like cooking, cleaning, and washing. She used to come to Jake's apartment like this because they lived close, only 15 minutes by walk. Although Jake had told her to stop, worried that it would bother her, Chloe answered that it was his dad who made her keep doing it.

Even so, she quite understood that Jake needed some privacy. They were no longer children, even though they were close like a family, in reality, it was not. Growing up, they started to know the limits of their relationship. Thankfully, Chloe understood all of that. That made it easier for Jake cause he didn't have to tell her again and again.

However, since the last week, Jake asked her to do it again because he had nightmares lately. He was afraid, unable to wake up on time. So, that was why she was standing outside Jake's apartment.

"Jake, are you hear me?"

Chloe's voice sounded again, it was a bit louder. Impatient, Chloe knocked on the door sloppily a few seconds later.

Jake let out a deep breath, putting the bottle on the floor near the bed's board leg. He had to prepare himself cause he knew that girl was hard to handle, at least from the former Jake Windfield's point of view. That girl's personality was too carefree and negligent sometimes.

Jake straightened up as he got up, took sluggish steps, and then opened the door knop. "Don't yell at someone's door, you would disturb the neighbors," said Jake reluctantly, rubbing his back head.

"Don't give me your attitude! Don't you forget, I'm here to make sure you wake up!" Chloe groaned as she crossed her hands on her chest. She seemed couldn't care less about Jake's complaint.

"Fine, thanks." Moving his vision away, Jake walked toward the bathroom.

After opening the bathroom door and stepping inside, Jake closed the door and leaned his back against it. He took a deep breath, tried to calm himself down. 'Shit, I'm out of this world!'

Glancing at Chloe's beauty from his memory, Jake was mesmerized. However, he didn't think the real one would be so beautiful. With long pure white hair, a small face with delicate pinkish lips packed on a slim figure, Chloe was undoubtedly as stunning as a goddess from a fantasy world.

Despite being popular in a popular high school in Seoul, Jake hadn't been into relationships, because he focused on his study more. Smart, in good shape, and quite handsome were his charms. Moreover, he had a cool temper, making girls dare themselves to get attention from him. But yet, his exes could be counted by both hands.

But in here, Jake had felt just like a teenager in puberty who hadn't experienced his first love yet. The beauty standard for both men and women was significantly different. He got no experience yet. Applying his standard for an ideal girl in this new world would give him a mental crisis.

"It seems I have to get used to the beauty standard of this world as soon as possible and act like a gentleman. Any other way, Chloe would notice something wrong with me!" Muttering in his mind, Jake turned on the shower and took a bath.

It took not a long time until Jake finished his shower. It was a bit uneasy for men to show his upper body to girls, yet the former Jake Windfield didn't care too much if it was Chloe. So, he had no choice but to do it too, stepping out of the bathroom only using a towel around his waist.

"What are you doing?" Jake was startled seeing Chloe was cleaning his countertops. With a glance, he also noticed that the dishes had been cleaned and placed on the stainless steel rack.

"Are you blind?" Chloe retorted, didn't even give him a single look. She kept stroking a white-green rag against the countertops.

Starting to be concerned about dealing with Chloe, Jake walked away to avoid unnecessary arguments. Too risky, Jake didn't know how to handle Chloe yet, better kept his temper from leaking. After all, Chloe didn't seem cautious about the carpet beside the bedroom. There was the main problem lying down.

"I dunno why men always like this, procrastinate," mumbled, Chloe was staring at Jake as he opened a fancy wooden wardrobe.

"I don't take a complaint from someone who couldn't even tell the difference between a shampoo and a liquid soap," replied Jake nonchalantly.

Hearing the answer, Chloe flushed. She didn't expect Jake would hear that. "That's no longer relevant! I can distinguish between brands of liquid soap!" She spoke confidently.

"Yeah, you sure can." Jake curled his lips while he stood with his back facing Chloe. Then he took his uniform from the hanger stored inside the wardrobe. "Are you done? I'm gonna put on my uniform."

"Huh-uh? Oh yeah. I'll wait for you outside." She replied, looking a bit lost before she took steps to grab her bag on the small couch.

"No need, you can go first," answer Jake spontaneously.

Chloe gave him a deep look, trying to make sure he was sure, and then nodded before she went out. "Catch me soon." She added as she closed the door.

Jake could hear her steps counting down the staircase and getting lower as seconds went by. Not wasting the time, Jake put on his uniform neatly and grabbed his charged smartphone on the bedside table.

Checking if there were a massage from his mother, Jake almost dropped the phone when he saw the wallpaper. It was a photo of him and Chloe taken from Chloe's recent birthday. "What a freak! Fucking nuts, this Jake nerd had fallen deep with his best friend! Damn it!" Jake snorted and put the smartphone in his pocket, then went to school.
