The stable breathing and the sound of beeping were the only noise within the room. When Cresencia regained consciousness, she was lying on a hospital bed, exhausted, weak, and uncomfortable. A boy not older than ten sat on the chair beside her. His eyes were a little swollen, but his charming face remained stoic.
He seriously read the medical reports in his hands. The little figure was comparable to a doctor who suddenly encountered difficulties within his years of practice. And a trace of worry was reflected in his eyes as if the problem's solution was not feasible enough to solve it.
The child sighed for the nth time and put the results down. He pinched the bridge of his nose, checked his phone for news, and calculated how long it would take till his sister woke up. Six months have passed since Cresencia's mortal body fell in a coma, and upon her absence, she directly picked the role of the eldest lady in a renowned noble household.
She stared at the child and thought hard about what had happened. That night she was sure that she was on her way back before the unknown light changed her portal. Yet how did she end up coming to the mortal world?
"You're awake! Wait, let me call the doctor."
The boy jumped and hurriedly ran out of the room to find the doctor in charge of his sister's condition. Cresencia was a little skeptical, thinking about why the portal converted her to become human. She gently moved her fingers, and then there was this sudden excitement, a strange feeling of reconnecting her soul with a mortal's body.
"Not bad..." her hoarse voice sounded childish. It surprised her.
The doors finally opened, doctors lined in with a couple of nurses. One checked her blood pressure, and the other looked for unseen complications. People occupied themselves communicating with each other, and some pointed out their observations, and others planned for a series of tests to conduct.
"Hello-- dad, big sister is awake!" the little boy patiently waited for the doctors to check his sister as he talked with their father carefully.
"Your mom and I will come later, so take good care of your sister first," the stern voice of their father responded from the other line.
"I will, Dad," the boy assured, and then he ended the call
"Young Master, the dean, has decided to perform a series of tests on the eldest lady, and they need a family member to sign the consent. Should we contact the madam?" Mr. Gregory, the butler, asked
"No need, I'll do it. Please give me a pen and the forms that require my signature. Mother will be thrilled to the point that she might cause unnecessary troubles" the little guy thought that if he let his mother come, she would be too anxious to see her daughter, to the point of nagging and thanking everyone around them
He convinced the doctor assigned to process the documents. So he handed everything to the child who would complete the request forms. The kid watched as they carried his sister away. Exhaustion finally overtook his body, and he noticed how bad his shape was, so he decided to go back to the VIP room and get some sleep.
With the familiarity of the laboratory room, Cresencia fell asleep shortly. Memories she never once saw flashed vividly in her dream. There were so many entities in different worlds, and countless of them died on the same day, so for her to see something meant to forget it after.
But what she saw made her utterly speechless, like a newborn, clueless about the world.
She was known as someone who does not dwell with other people's businesses. What her power consumes are treated as scraps that can make her grow more robust. But right now, her dream seemed to be a memorable scene of growing up, being loved and pampered by many.
It feels as if she was an outsider. She is lost in a world that she cannot touch, a world filled with warm sentiments. She was frozen in the middle, stuck- surrounded by unbothered happiness.
Then the dream switched unto the road. It was a journey home, where the sky cried to its heart's content. And from a distance, she observed what had happened before the accident.
Initially, the real mortal, Cresencia, was resting halfway through, but her phone beeped with constant warning messages. Somehow she decided to ignore the sender and pretended that nothing was wrong. Someone must be pranking her, or so she thought.
A conclusion was formed in Cresencia's head, listing infinite possibilities of why the intentional accident occurred. Of course, as the new owner of the body, she's securing herself ahead, and the only way to avoid calamity is by knowing the memories of the past.
"The truck itself was intentional, and it was obvious that their family's driver was in control, but facts also proved that a big problem lies within the car's engine."
When the opposite sixteen-wheeler truck decided to meet them, their driver had tried to save the situation by shifting away from the road they were taking. But the car's brake is long broken, and he lost control of the momentum. The collision between the two was too strong, so he freed the doors and kept them open, sacrificing himself to let them out.
"My body was too pitiful that I rolled out of the car at high speed, truly fascinating-- How come no bones fractured? No bleeding or something? Is it a koi's luck?"
From her point of view, the owner's family status both in politics and business must be enough for others to release their jealousy and clean her up first. Cresencia walked towards her virtual body.
"If those puppies have the guts to confront me, just let them come."
The dress and the cloak she was wearing earlier were slowly fading in the background as she blended into the body and returned to the hospital. The aching of her head made her believe that humans are very fragile. They almost die in an accident.
