Chapter 1 - Impact

*Pat*

My brother slapped me across the face, leaving an imprint of his hand on it and an annoying ringing in my ear. I licked the corner of my lip where blood started to come out from a fresh cut. 'Usually tastes worse.' I thought after tasting my blood.

I looked back at my brother, in his angry green eyes. At that time, he was 4 years older and way more muscular than me. He was 6 feet 4 inches, whereas I was 6 feet 1 inches. He inherited my Mother's pale skin color and my father's eye shape. His light-brown and middle-long hair was kept in a middle part, the hair on his sides and on the back of his head were short. His thick, black eyebrows were always furrowed when I saw him, making it seem like he was angry at my mere presence. His nose was a bit crooked from being broken one too many times, and his upper lip had 2 scars on it's left side. His jawline looked as if it was sculpted. Although he was handsome, he never had a lover, at least I never heard or seen him having a girlfriend.

He may have the looks to rival pop-idols, but he was a self-proclaimed gangster with a criminal record that made him the trash of society. Since his teens, he never listened to any grown-ups, had bad grades, would get into fights and hang out with the local gang. But a lifestyle like that had given him a fair share of experience.

"Why are we arguing about this?! I don't care about logic. I just feel like it will happen." He said after he slapped me.

I gritted my teeth and closed my fists in anger. "Are you stupid, Haru? Do you really think the billions of credits that were spent to calculate the asteroid's trajectory were wasted?"

He took a step forward, closed his right fist and looked at me through his eyebrows. 'He is going to punch me know.' I thought as I closed my mouth and squinted my eyes to minimize the damage he would do to me.

The punch never landed, instead, a voice carrying authority resounded throughout the room that stopped him in his tracks. "Haru, were you going to hit your brother?" My Father asked.

No matter how much of a gangster my brother was, he could never one-up our father when it came to fighting. Our father was from a country called Lebanon. He grew up there and inherited his family's sword style that was passed on for generations in his family. The style was called 'the Warm Light style', and it was only taught to the eldest in the family regardless of gender. My brother, who had mastered this style, never managed to beat my father. This inferiority carried into their relationship, making my brother unable to disobey him.

Haru didn't answer immediately, he scratched both sides of his head, above the ear, something he would do when under stress or fear. This habit of his was so bad that sometimes he would scratch his skin off, leading to scarring.

"I was! That's because he looked down on me." He answered pridefully.

My father proceeded to look at me, then look at Haru. His dark-green eyes carried the sharpness of a sword and made us both wonder if he was reading our minds. He opened his mouth to speak "Dinner is ready." He grinned and walked toward the kitchen. Haru didn't expect this reaction. He expected to get slapped across the face, just like he did to me. Not being punished made him feel ignored and he became angry. He turned around, put on a jacket and went outside.

"He probably got out to see the asteroid pass by in the night sky." I said to myself.

I shook my head at my brother's childish reaction and walked to the kitchen. As I entered the kitchen, the smell of meat invaded my nose, causing an overproduction of saliva in my mouth. My mother was from Japan, and member of Clan Henka. A clan of swordsman who also possessed a unique sword style. The 'Space Entity style' that is taught to every member of the family regardless of gender. My brother was an exception because he learned the style of my father. The Henka Clan also had a few traditions. One of them was, a woman must marry the person she was defeated by in a duel. 'My father was lucky to have met her...' I thought.

"Turn on the Central Superio News channel." My mother said as she turned around. Her beautiful, light-brown eyes emitted a sense of control that reigned supreme over anything regarding the business in the kitchen or in training. Yet, I didn't like being ordered around, even by my parents, but regarding some things. I had already beaten her several times in a duel, but I still did what I was told to do.

*Ping*

I tuned on the TV that was on the wall opposite of the dining table. A holographic screen was emitted by a projector, and it showed the Central Superio News Channel.

"CSN" hired an astronaut that was on a space station to be a reporter and comment on the events happening in space.

"Citizen of Central Superio, my name is Seer Aurora and I will comment on what's happening in this event. An event like this may never occur in our lifetimes, so make sure to stick around and watch." She said. Seer Aurora was known as the smartest and youngest person to have been chosen to fly to space and stay on a space-station. She was about 5 feet and 3 inches tall, had dark-black hair, a petite nose, and pinkish lips and cheeks. She was definitely attractive.

A few minutes after her introduction, we could see a blueish and oval shaped asteroid appear from behind the moon. "As you can see on the screen, the asteroid named 'Salan' appeared from behind the moon. Salan is half the size of the moon and it's heading straight into the sun." Seer explained.

When my Mother was serving the food, she asked where my brother was. My answer didn't cause a reaction as it was common that my brother wouldn't eat with us.

"We will now switch the view to a satellite that is located at the other side of the earth." Seer Aurora announced as pictures from the other side of the earth and the asteroid became visible on the screen.

The other side of the earth was always covered with thick storm clouds, and in all of human history, no one or nothing was able to reach it's eye. Planes would loose radio signal and crash into the ocean, boats would sink from the waves that were hundreds of feet in height, and submarines would just start sinking and eventually implode due to the water pressure. Legends say that there is an island in the eye of the storm that has records and information on the ancient human history. Everyone calls the other side of the earth 'The Ancient Storm'.

The asteroid suddenly came to a halt above The Ancient Storm. Its speed and momentum gone. I wondered if the projector glitch, but after seeing Seer Aurora move while the asteroid stood still, my confusion became even greater. "What the hell happened?" I asked. The asteroid was as far away from the earth as the moon, and the last thing we saw on TV before the electricity cut off was Salan descending towards earth.

I stood up and tried to get my eyes used to the darkness. "I have a bad feeling about this! What should we do, dad?" I said as my body went into survival mode.

I was waiting for my father to give us orders, tell us a way to overcome this unknown scale of destruction unharmed. He yelled, "Open all the doors upstairs! This house was built to withstand shock waves". After his order, I tried to go upstairs as fast as possible, but the dark made me trip and hit my foot several times.

My time was limited. I started opening all the doors upstairs and remembered the words of my father. "In case of an earthquake, open all the doors. The earthquake might start shaking our house, damaging it, shifting its weight on the closed doors and making it nearly impossible to open them again." Right when I was going back to the kitchen, the earth started to shake.

"These worthless scientists' calculations were wrong! The asteroid hit the earth!" I shouted. The shock wave of the impact reached our location and shattered the window I was standing in front of and flung me to the wall on the other side, knocking me unconscious.
