Chapter 6: John
Rose told John that Alex moved to Mississippi due to financial problems. John couldn't believe that Alex moved to the same state as Kate. Kate wrote and told James that Alex was going to the same school. John hadn't realized that Kate's friend Sara was Alex's cousin. Alex didn't talk very much about his family. John was so jealous of Alex. He knew that Alex couldn't stand James and was trying to go out with Kate to make James jealous, but John knew James wouldn't care. John did however care what was going on with Kate. Kate wrote and told James that she and Alex were just friends which made John feel better.
When James started dating Jill, John was glad because he was worried since Alex moved that Jill would be bugging him again. Rose later told John that Alex moved with his Uncle in New York; John was glad to hear that. Kate told James that Alex hadn't liked going to school in Mississippi and that Alex would visit his mother during the holidays. Kate also shared that she was going to Florida during her summer break. John didn't talk to James about it because he didn't think he would care. John's Uncle gave him permission to go to Florida and he had saved his money. He couldn't wait to see Kate.
John's cousin Jack went to visit and told John that he was going to Florida too. Jack and John got along better than James and John did. John told Jack about Kate. "So, James has no idea that you are using his name to write to Kate?" Jack asked. "No, Kate thinks James is writing her," John confided. "You know that Kate is going to be angry when she learns the truth," Jack complained. "I know, that is what I am afraid of," John confessed. "Why don't you tell her the truth when you meet her in Florida?" Jack suggested. "I was asking myself the same question Jack, but I can't tell her. I know you think I am a coward," John muttered. "I don't think you're a coward. This girl must mean a lot to you. One day you need to tell Kate the truth. Kate will take the truth a lot better if you told her, but if someone else tells her it would be a lot worse. Also, Kate would be angrier to learn the truth from someone else and you will lose her," Jack explained. "I will tell her the truth when the time is right," John promised.
John knew what Jack was saying was true, but he wanted to hang out with Kate and become her friend. He wanted to stop writing to Kate as James. He thought if she stopped getting letters from James, she would forget him, and he would have a chance with her. James told John that he called Kate and they talked for hours. "Why did you call Kate? I thought you were going out with Jill?" John asked James. "My parents made me call her. They still want to be on good terms with her Uncle," James said. John then realized that it was going to be hard to get Kate to forget about James.
Kate wrote James stating that she and her Uncle would be in England after she returned from Florida. John was happy, but worried that Kate would find out about James and Jill. "You not going to believe this, Kate and her Uncle are coming to visit this summer. Kate is going to ruin my whole summer. Jill and I were going to hang out, but I have to hang out with Kate now!" James exclaimed angrily. "Why don't you just tell Kate the truth, she will understand. I am sure she doesn't want you to be forced to hang out with her," John implored. "Kate is only going to be in England for two weeks so I can put up with her for two weeks," James acknowledged.
