Chapter 7: Kate
Kate couldn't believe Uncle Martin was taking her to England during her summer break. She looked forward to seeing James, Rose, Lisa, and John. She wouldn't be going until after her trip to Florida, but she was excited. Kate knew it would be a great summer with the two trips that were planned. It was already Valentine's Day and her class had a party. She received many Valentine cards from her classmates. When she arrived home, she had received roses from James and Alex which she loved but felt bad that she hadn't sent them anything. That weekend she would go shopping and get them something. Rose and Lisa called, and they all talked for hours.
Kate again made the honor roll. The art club teacher praised Kate's work by telling her that her art was getting better. Kate had also won $100.00 in the art contest and she saved the money to go to Florida. Kate was able to go to see a play about Anne Frank; the actress that played Anne Frank did a great job. After the play, they went to the mall and Kate bought earrings and a book. Uncle Martin took Aunt Polly and Kate out to eat. They ate at the Oliver Garden where the food was great. When they returned home, Kate received a call from Alex, and they talked for 30 minutes before she prepared for bed. School was out for summer! Kate would be heading to Florida in a week and she was thrilled. She had saved a lot of money for the trip. The writing club would be going to a theatre play. Kate also thought about the trip to England after she returned from Florida. She was looking forward to seeing James; she hadn't seen him in five years. Kate went shopping bought something she need to take to Florida. Sara and Kate went swimming for an hour then had something to eat. Kate was so happy to be out of school because one teacher really made things tough. She was very moody and took her personal problems out on the class which made things hard in class.
The week went by fast and Kate was on an airplane heading to Florida. She took her a book to read during the trip. She already missed Sara, but Sara was going to visit Alex in England. Kate told Sara if she saw James to say hello for her. Kate's flight was not long, and once they landed in Florida went and they checked into their hotel. The plan was to rest that day then go see Hamlet and purchase gifts that following day. Kate called Aunt Polly and Uncle Martin then went to bed.
The writing club went to the Hamlet play and although Kate didn't understand it, she thought it was good. They went shopping so Kate was able to get some gifts for Aunt Polly, Uncle Martin, and her friends. They also went horseback riding. While riding, Kate rode too fast lost control and she fell. She broke her leg and hips. She was rushed to the hospital as Aunt Polly and Uncle Martin flew to Florida to be with her. The doctor told Aunt Polly and Uncle Martin that Kate had to stay in bed for the whole summer. She hated that because she wouldn't be able to go to England. Kate knew James would also be disappointed.
Kate wrote James to explain that she wouldn't be going to England due to the accident. James wrote back and asked if she would be ok and Kate replied that she would be fine. Kate mailed him the gift that she had bought for him which was a book about King Henry VIII. He really liked that gift. James gave Kate a blue sapphire ring that she liked. Kate had stomach pain and didn't eat much. Sara went to visit Kate when she returned from England. She told Kate that she had met James and thought he was a jerk.
Sara told Kate that she liked John better than James. "I think you should be writing John and not James. When I told James, you said hello he acted like he didn't care. Oh, and John says hello," Sara shares with Kate. "I am sure that James didn't mean to be rude, he was just not feeling well," Kate defended to Sara. "Okay, just be careful. I know a jerk when I see one," Sara warned.
