Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19

SIYA RAINS-

We were in a hurry, damnit. It was a bad decision to stay over after our little romp. Now we are going to be late for the hearing. I can't find my phone either. It was annoying how Landon was so calm and slow but was ready before I was.

Oh god, this is a nightmare!

Thankfully Landon had some of my clothes that I left here the last time and they were decent enough. As we quickly got into the car, I ruffled through my handbag to finally find my phone. I quickly switched it on to see ten miss calls.

2 from Analia

3 from Rebecca

And 5 from Jimmy.

I quickly called Jimmy as that was the most important call right now. He never calls unless it's important. As Landon drove down the street, he rubbed my shoulder to calm me down. I hated not being on time, for me such things are like an itch I can't scratch and Landon knew that.

"Hi Siya, I've been calling you since yesterday. Are you okay?" He said with his voice laced with concern. Poor guy, always worried about others first.

"I am completely fine, my phone was lagging so I just got it repaired. What's wrong? Is everything okay?" I asked him and I could hear him breathe very loudly before saying something that shocked me.

"Umm can you come and pick me up? I would take a cab but I don't think I am capable yet."

"Yeah of course, we will pick you up, what happened to your girlfriend?" I asked worriedly as Landon just nodded at me and turned the car around as we headed to Jimmy's house.

"She broke up with me. I don't know why, she just left yesterday with her things and refused to explain." He said with a strong voice but it broke at the end as I heard him sniff.

"Okay, we'll be there in just a few minutes. Hang in there, sweetie." I tell him as I disconnect the phone.

I can't believe this!

"What happened?" I looked at Landon who looked beyond confused at my shocked face.

"Elisa broke up with him." I whispered and I could see the expression on his face change suddenly.

It was the same expression he had on his face when we first met, distant and dead eyes. I always liked to believe that Landon became more human around me but when his expression changed after just hearing this news, it didn't sit well with me.

He removed his hand from my shoulder and continued driving. It was a painful silent ride. Both the times, after we picked Jimmy up, who was too broken to speak. She was all he had. She knew that, everyone knew that.

As we reached the court, Landon and I helped him out with his crutches after which we led him inside the courtroom. Landon refused to look at me. I felt like he knew something I didn't. I wasn't surprised, he was always a few steps ahead of everyone else. The good news was that we reached the court fifteen minutes before the session started which calmed my nerves a bit. I quickly called Rebecca back, knowing Analia would probably have some lame thing to talk about which would just end up irritating me.

"Where the hell were you?!!" Rebecca's voice screamed through the phone.

"Good god woman, I am fine, I was with Landon." I told her the truth, knowing it's useless to lie to her.

"Well, I thought I'd warn you, Paul, the guy you are fighting the case against asked Analia out. I don't know what he is playing at but she was ecstatic that she finally found a rich man that she said yes. That dimwit doesn't know that he might end up hurting her too the way he hurt your student." My heart stopped beating as soon as I heard those words.

Everything has stopped making sense now. This is awful. I can't take this anymore. I loved Analia, she was my sister. Yes, she was dumb and superficial but still she is my sister.

"Siya, are you okay? Siya…I just thought I'd warn you before it's too late." I hear Rebecca saying but it was too late. I turn around to see Paul's creepy face smiling down at me.

"Rebecca, I have to go." I say as I disconnect the call.

I try my best to hide the disgust and anger about him even touching my sister deep inside my heart because if psychology taught me anything, it was people like Paul just want to get a reaction out of you. If he sees me angry or in any way affected by it, he will try to exploit that weakness more.

"You look beautiful, but your sister is a bombshell I must say, also more welcoming. You can't imagine the number of seconds it took her to open her legs for me." I felt creeps crawling up my spine as I kept a straight face. I could see that Paul didn't like the fact that I wasn't reacting to him at all.

"Well, you guys have the same type of body but she is a blonde bombshell and you are a cute shy brunette. I have to say, it is more fun fucking a good girl." I shuddered on the inside as I felt like crying. I didn't like it that this case has gotten my family involved now. How can a man even bring himself to say such horrendous things?

I know for a fact that if I have a chat with Analia that would just make her think that I am saying this with some ulterior motive. I have to find a different way to deal with Analia. For now, I just walked past Paul, and headed to the courtroom.

"I know you are opening your legs for my little brother. I can understand why, you have to pay his fee, one way or the other." That stung me but I didn't flinch and continued walking ahead. I am having the worst day of my life. This is not happening to me.

The court proceedings went on as usual, with Landon topping most of the opposition's arguments making me feel slightly better. As we were about to win this case, Paul's lawyer,Wyatt, requested to present his witness.

"Your Honour, I'd like to ask Ms. Elisa, the former girlfriend of James Miller to come to the witness box." I audibly gasped and so did Jimmy. He was shocked and heartbroken. I wish I could comfort him right now. I looked over at Landon who was composed and calm, like he had expected something like this to happen.

"Good Morning, your honour." She said with the same innocent voice she talked to me with. I wanted to punch her in her stupid face. This isn't fair, why is Jimmy still suffering, he has suffered enough in his life.

"Now Ms. Elisa, would you like to tell us about Mr. Miller's devious plan that you could no longer be a part of?" He paused a little before asking.

"Well, he got into a fight on the street with someone, after which he came home and told me that he had a perfect plan to not work again ever and have a lot of money. I told him this doesn't feel right but he didn't listen to me so I went along with it. But my conscious wouldn't let me rest so I had to end it and speak the truth." Conscious? Really? She is talking about conscious?

Jimmy's head was down as he sobbed, he probably couldn't handle this. She was his only family and she betrayed him. For what? Money?

"Your honour, this is an absolute sham and I can prove it, I need some more time. This was a shock that we have received and you can probably tell that from my client's reaction." The judge nodded as Landon explained. "We have provided you with endless proofs, so just somebody's words-"

"Not just somebody, his girlfriend, an active person in your little group has spoken the truth." Wyatt interrupted with an annoying smile on his face.

Bastard.

"Your honour, can I get some more time to prove this man's innocence and also the fact that he has been through grave injustice. Even after that one of the most trusted people in his life has backstabbed him." Landon said ignoring Wyatt completely before shooting Elisa a dead look making her gulp hard and look instantly guilty.

"Mr. Chambers, you are one of the best lawyers I know, I am going to give you the benefit of doubt. The next and final session of court will be held next month where I will be announcing my decision. The court is adjourned." I snap out of my daze when I hear the gavel, I look over to see Jimmy's head still buried in his hands, while Landon said something to him.

As we drove to my house after dropping Jimmy at his close friend's house, knowing he can't be left alone. I wanted to talk to Elisa and ask her why but she disappeared as soon as the court was adjourned. She didn't have the nerve to face me after the inhumane thing she had done.

"You knew, didn't you?" I asked Landon who hadn't said a word to me after he found out about Jimmy.

"Yes, the minute you said that she left out of the blue, I knew." He said, which made me wonder how little faith this man had in other people. "I've worked as a lawyer for years now. I see such kind of things every day. You wouldn't last a day in court, because you like to believe in people. That's not how things work in real life." He says almost in a calm accusatory tone.

"Landon, why are you saying things like that?" I asked him, confused as to why is he so disappointed rather than angry.

"Because of you I started to open myself to believing in people again. If I was my old self, I would have predicted Elisa's betrayal a long time ago. I needed this as a reality check, I was living in this dream world after I met you where everything was finally okay. But that's not the case, is it? My heart was almost carved out of my body, I feel like I've always been better without it." As he said those words I realized what he was going through. He had experienced second hand betrayal through Jimmy, and that just sent him back to square one, to the way he was when I met him for the first time.

Distant, Cold and Detached.

This isn't good, I know. It was kind of necessary as Landon has been scarred for life, he won't get over such a tragic moment from his life so quickly. But hopefully our girl, Siya, hopefully will fight for him.
