Chapter 18 - The Dead Frontier (10)

Looking at the thrown off furniture, open jail cells and the perfectly open safe with nothing inside it was obvious. The place had already been looted.

There was still one interesting thing inside the room though.

Glen turned towards the sheriff's table. Behind it lay a cold dead body whose head was blown off. Looking at the badge on his vest Glen assumed it was the town's ex-sheriff.

It seems like, just like a boat captain, he decided to go down with his ship.

"Kid, let this be a lesson to you." said Glen as he pointed towards the now dead sheriff.

"What lesson? About how we should never steal?"

*Smack!*

Glen suddenly hit Ezekiel at the back of his head.

"No idiot! Stealing is fine. What I meant was to always keep the last bullet for yourself. Just like this guy."

"Why? So that I don't become a night devil?"

"Yes, being a zombie is a fate worse than death. Especially, if you have loved ones."

Ezekiel seemed to have noticed something. He then went towards the sheriff's dead body. Glen didn't stop him. He was sure that by this point kid must have already become desensitized to dead bodies.

Then he watched as Ezekiel went down and picked the empty revolver from the ground.

"Can I keep this?"

"Let me see."

Glen picked the revolver from Ezekiel's hands. It must have been the sheriff's old gun.

It was a single action army revolver issued to every sergeant rank and above (not mistaken with "peacemaker"). Huh, turns out this old sheriff was an ex-army man.

The gun itself looked like any other revolver aside from the rebated cylinders. It was also less heavy than his own navy. It should make it easier for Ezekiel to carry.

Seeing that there was no blemish inside the barrel, it seemed like the old man took great care of his gun.

Yikes, now this was a problem.

This gun had a higher calibre than his own navy. The bullets themselves were fine and he should have dozens of them inside his backpack but the problem was the kickback.

Looking at the kid's thin arms he might shoot only once and then drop the gun. Also, carrying a gun strangely makes people braver. What if the kid became cocky and did dangerous stuff?

... Sigh, he was not his nanny so he shouldn't care. The gun itself was fine and it looked cool with its black, rose engraved, handle.

"Here you go. It looks in good condition but don't forget to clean it up regularly. Oh, also unlike my navy you have cock every shot so don't forget that if you want to shoot multiple times"

Glen handed the revolver over to Ezekiel whose eyes were shining.

"Thanks, sir!" said Ezekiel as he carefully picked up the revolver and started inspecting it.

*Crash* *Growl*

Glen quickly leaned against the wall and signalled Ezekiel to be quiet.

They had just heard a loud crash. These damn zombies must be up to something. Maybe they had smelled the duo and were now searching for them.

Glen slowly made his way towards the window with his gun and peeked outside the window carefully.

Just what the hell was wrong with this town? He had a bust two times in a row!

Usually, he would have found way more stuff in a raided town. Not to mention this town was a freshly destroyed one to booth!

However, the scene in front of his eyes was different than the one Glen imagined.

It was true that the zombies were moving somewhere but they were not moving towards them. Where were they going?

Suddenly, a blue thing caught his eyes. It seemed to be a person.

She was running as fast she could while carrying something in her arms.

*Bang*

*Bang*

Gunshots! If he was not wrong, they sounded like they came from a couple of rifles.

Glen looked towards the origin of the loud shots and saw a couple of people leaning from the ex-bank.

Were they the remaining watchman of the town?

"Ms Wright!" said Ezekiel excitedly.

"Who is she?" Glen was not disturbed by the fact there might be survivors inside the town. In fact, this might even be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the duo.

"She was the teacher in our school. She was a very kind person."

Glen looked towards the woman again. She was desperately running towards the ex-bank. Her clothes were a mess. Her long auburn hair was all over the place. Strangely enough, that created the image of a burning fire in Glen's mind. He didn't know what she was carrying but she was doing everything she could to protect it. Maybe some rations?

As Glen watched her, Ms Wright finally managed to make it into the bank and the people inside immediately closed the door again. Zombies were banging on the door but it was standing there steadily.

Seems like the people there managed to divert a calamity but how long could they hang on? The building was now surrounded by at least a hundred zombies. They had no chance of escaping. Even if they were safe inside, for now, their supplies would eventually run out.

"Are you going to save them, sir?"

"Depends. Do you want me to save them?" Glen turned back towards Ezekiel to see his reaction.

After all, these were still the people that tried to sacrifice him. It would be understandable if he wanted to kill them, let alone if he left them to die.

"Ugh... I don't know. Not everyone from the town was a bad person" said Ezekiel.

That was enough of an answer. It seemed like he picked up a softie... But Glen liked that.

However, that didn't mean Glen was going to put himself into danger for random people he had never met before.

"Well, here is the plan then..."
