Chapter 9 - Family

Jeremy didn't let go of me until I accepted his offer. He grabbed my shoulders and pushed me towards the elevator.

Jeremy: Were you fine today?

-I was but not anymore.

Jeremy frowned on me. He was really trying hard to help but I wasn't aware that time. He became silent and waited until we reach the first floor. I looked at him, there was a serious feeling in his eyes. I was curious about why he helped dame. It seemed to be right time so I asked: Why are you doing this?

My question surprised him then said: That surprised me. Me taking you out for dinner?

-No, about everything. I'm a total stranger who barged into your private property.

Jeremy: Do you want me to turn you in?

-No, but what might be your reasons for going so far as to give a place to live and a job?

He smiled at me, whenever I said anything he would do that. I got the feeling that he wanted to evade the topic by smiling but I needed an answer to know who I was dealing with.

-Stop smiling and answer properly.

Jeremy: Sometimes you just get the feeling to do things but you have no idea why you are doing.

-That's a lie. An action becomes an action when it has a reason, behind every word or behavior lies an explanation.

Jeremy: I didn't want to admit it but kindness doesn't need reasons. You just step out and help whoever you can.

-I've got no use for you and I've brought expenses for you, you're gaining nothing.

Jeremy: You're wrong. I got myself a new friend.

I didn't know what to say. If he was that desperate for finding a friend, he could've just found someone and hang out with, not providing their life expenses. Jeremy was somehow happy about the fact that I didn't deny our friendship. Well we weren't friends, we were just barely acquainted people who had come together and started a new life involving each other. I couldn't just declare friendship. I had had enough of fake friends and families so trusting a new person as a friend was dangerous. But deep down in my heart, there was something holding me back from opposing him and I wanted to call him a friend.

I was still waiting for a reasonable answer but he didn't show any sign of noticing me. We reached the first floor and got on his car. It was night time. The sky had a nice dark blue color with shining stares. It felt beautiful. I couldn't avert my eyes. It was like that time was the first time I had ever seen something. If an outsider was to tell, they would describe me as a moonstruck idiot. I didn't feel Jeremy's presence as I was enjoying the sky. Yes, that's right. I was enjoying. How didn't I notice the sky before? How could life be so dull before?

Jeremy who found out my long stares, broke the silence and said: You must love the sky.

Since I wasn't really un my guard that moment, I got startled, as if the cloud of mind had blown away and I was left unknown.

Jeremy: oh! Did I scare you?

-No. You just got me off guards.

Jeremy: You're a kid after all. No matter how strong you behave, you're still kid who gets lost in her world.

-I'm not a kid.

Jeremy: Do you like the sky?

-It's not like I like it or not, it's just pleasing to look at. In a world where everything is unfair, the only fair part is the sky. The sky doesn't care if you're rich or poor, successful or loser, human or inhuman, good or bad, kind or evil, girl or boy, damaged or healthy. It covers everyone. It; fair.

Jeremy: I hadn't thought about it that way. You have a creative mind.

-No, I'm not creative, I just state the truth about things.

Jeremy: Well in this world, being able to tell the truth needs a lot courage. A creative person, looks at everything with no previous mindset. He tells the truth in a better way but it's still reality. That's who you are.

-I guess that's right.

Jeremy: Do you have any kind of food you wanna try?

-Nothing special.

Jeremy: Any special place you wanna eat in?

-I just set my feet here for the first time with you. I don't know this area.

Jeremy: So that means I'll be your guide for today, what a great honor.

-Why are you always so cheerful?

Jeremy: It's better than being gloomy all the time.

-That's absurd.

Jeremy turned his face towards mine, he was hesitating to say something. I could guess what he wanted to say.

-Don't ask anything about my past.

Jeremy: I know, but you're gonna tell me at some point.

-Don't get your hopes high. Your cheerful face will get buried with darkness if you live on false hope.

Jeremy laughed at me, then said: Wanna make a bet?

-About what?

Jeremy: Five years later, on a day like today. You're gonna tell me every moment of your life.

-And what about the opposite?

Jeremy: Well if I was wrong, then you'll take my position.

-There's only advantage for you. If you wanna get rid of your leadership role, then why don't you give it to Dilan?

Jeremy: Well, I'm the boss, so I make decisions. Are you in or not?

-Yeah, I'm in.

At that moment, it never crossed my mind about how life would become. Jeremy was right. I spitted out everything for him, everything. It annoyed me and still annoys me how he knew everything.

He took me to a small family restaurant. Family, family, family, why was everything he did related to family? Giving lectures about loving your family, talking about family, walking towards family, he didn't even have a family and he still insisted on family. Why was family important to him? I didn't know the answer but right now, that I'm in tears, right now that I'm in pieces, I understand him. But it's late. It's late to try to get back to the family I abandoned. It's late.
