The third rat looked up from it's meal to stare at me. It's huge beady eyes stared for a instant before a defeaning screech came from the rat. I froze as the rat charged I stood there, unmoving.
The rat got closer and then jumped at me I slid underneath the rat and got up. I brought the are back as the rat landed outside and turned.
It immediately lunged back at me lower than before. I swung forward, landing it on the rats nose, cleaning the rats jaw and throat from its head.
The axe cleaned through the rats body and stuck in the door frame.
I used the momentum and spun outside and pulled out the knife ready for the rat to charge one last time.
I stood waiting for the rat to come for 15 seconds then a minute, then finally I had enough and grabbed a rock.
I threw it through the door and onto the floor just inside the frame, hitting the rats tail.
Nothing, 30-40 seconds, nothing happened.
I grabbed the axe from the door quickly and hopped back.
The rat didn't move, I sneaked forward and lunged, swinging the axe into the rats lifeless body. There was no struggle as the rat was dead.
I pulled the axe out and scanned the restaurant for anything else. There were two rows of tables with booths on the walls. The bar in the back looked ok, but I had to check and there was nothing behind the bar except for a bottle of vodka and 2 bottles of cheap whisky. I brought the bags inside and set them down in the booth. I locked the doors and all that was left to check was the backroom and kitchen.
The doors swung up as I walked through, and nothing was around. The kitchen was covered in blood.
That can't be safe for eating. I walked around and found some meat and fruit, but it was all expired. I found a can of condensed milk and two cans of canned beef.
I boiled some water and cooked up one of the beefs. I took it out and sat with my stuffs and scanned the walls for anything interesting.
I noticed a notice for people to evacuate to Murmansk across the way by the door. I finished my food and walked over.
" People of Zapolyarny head to the field station next to the train station to receive medication and schedule information for trains to Murmansk, those that are infected are not allowed aboard trains, anyone infected found attempting to board will be shot prepare to evacuate over the course of September 27, 28, 29, and 30."
It seems there was some sort of virus I guess that swept through, there must have been bombings as well because there was some damage down the street that I hadn't checked yet. The year was scratched out. I grabbed the paper from the wall and folded and put it into my coats inner pocket.
I left with my new loot and walked East towards the rubble. As I arrived, I was horrified. I guess evacuations were never finished as there were a field of corpses that were half-eaten and buried under rubble.
The train station was a wreck, and I didn't want to get any closer to the smell. I crouched and walked forward through the rubble. Rats could be anywhere, and my nerves were not calmed by the sight in front of me.
I walked to the tracks and the south half of the building was still standing and I checked the road map. It was around a 3-hour train ride down to Murmansk. I was going to have to walk that, and it would not be fun it was already noon so I decided to head to the office buildings to see if I could gather any information on this 'virus'.
