Chapter 9 - Eira's awakening

Syrus's pov

I watched as Emrys set up the winter gear, mainly setting up and reinforcing the carriages that were already built for the frigid cold temperatures of the gelian mountains.

I sighed weakly taking notice of my calloused hands quickly recalling the event that had occurred. For most of my life, the only things I'd hunted were animals, and while I liked to respect all life it tended to feel different when killing something that you could talk to, something that could relate to you.

Humans, elves, dwarves and my own kind, it was my first time killing something along those lines.

I looked over towards the ice elf, she laid peacefully underneath all the blankets and coverings she had despite the blistering cold blizzard that was occurring as of now.

A low growl quickly caught my attention and I silently watched the ice lynx hybrid stare at me apprehensively releasing a low growl despite the constant complaints its belly made.

Magic beasts such as this one itself could immediately tell I was a dragon if I wasn't actively trying to hide it. Its yellow catlike eyes flowed vibrantly underneath the somewhat dimly lit shelter, it hissed at every subtle movement I made.

Emrys looked at me strangely his face held clear confusion at my actions until he decided to stop observing a join us within the warm carriage-sledge.

And by doing so without at least trying to conceal his magic energy the ice elvan girl awoke from her slumber, her eyes darted from me over to him then towards the lynx-leopard hybrid that jumped in front of her as though it was protecting her.

Emrys looked over to me expecting me to say something as though I was the better speaker.

"uh...hey there," I said awkwardly and as I held my hand out she covered herself with the blanket even more despite the fact that if we were actually attacking her it wouldn't do a single thing.

"smoooth" Emrys muttered under his breath in a teasing manner immediately looking away once he realised I had noticed.

"We found you with some bad men and...we took care of them," I said leaving out the details of us brutally mutilating the group.

"I started a fire and got us a couple of gelian bunnies in case any of you were interested" Emrys chimed in as he pointed towards the fire he had somehow despite the intense winter made.

Well, it was a solid plan, surrounding the place we'd camp at with the carriages and rocks to ensure the fire wouldn't blow out.

"t-thank you" she responded weakly, I took notice of her bruises littered body then back towards Emrys who only nodded at me.

"would you like something to eat? We've got plenty of food and water" that we stole of course but we also wouldn't mention that part to her either.

She nodded shifting her body nervously as she did so, Emrys rushed over to the carriage he had rushing back shortly after with a pair of winter jackets and a warm hot soup he had somehow managed to prepare in that short amount of time.

And on cue, a low growl came from her stomach with Emrys awkwardly handing both items to her then to the Lynx hybrid beside her.

I sat beside her softly touching her hand, I was slightly caught off guard by her surprisingly cold hand as I guided her hand to the spoon that lay beside her.

I turned back to Emrys a smirk plastered upon his face as he examined my features.

"what?" I finally spoke up taking notice of the boys way too satisfied with himself's smile.

"you're smiling," he said merrily as he took a seat on the other side of the elven girl.

"We aren't gonna hurt you," he said softly as he took notice of the lynx cub he slowly moved towards it only receiving a handful of scratches to the face much to my entertainment.

The girl let out a laugh causing both me, Emrys and the lynx hybrid that had been with her to stop shocked at her sudden change in behaviour, when the cub noticed her happiness it turned to full gear scratching Emrys with every power and fibre within its body.

I could only awkwardly laugh at such behaviour, but the elf was damn near crying with how hard she'd been laughing.

Emrys just played along with it as he took notice of how well it seemed to ease the tension between the 4 of us.

"So what's your name?" I asked suddenly my eyes making contact with her yellow ones, she took in a deep breath before breathing out again as she finally spoke up. "my... My name is Eira"

Her voice was soft and timid, as though she didn't want to say any more than was needed, she avoided eye contact with me as she awkwardly twiddled her thumbs averting her gaze to anywhere in the room that wasn't me or Emrys.

"what's your last name?" Emrys interjected his gaze still fixated on the Lynx-leopard hybrid. Her face fell as fried overtook her features.

The blizzard that took place just outside began to pick up pace and the tension that had been eased began to return.

"you don't have to tell us!" I interjected though it seemed me taking action was too late.

"we're heading to travostacia" Emrys added as I nodded in agreement turning my attention back to the girl.

"No!" she yelled out her body shaking uncontrollable, Emrys looked over at me expectantly as though I should know everything about her by now.

"we'll need to at least know who your parents are or where you're from to help you," I said softly grasping ahold of her hand as I pulled her into a hug.

I could hear uncontrollable sobs come from her and the solemn look Emrys had didn't help either.

"my parents are dead and... I don't wanna go to Travostacia"
