Alex knew with Pamela around things are always never right and ever since he moved out without her. He has been able to rediscover himself and also to help Duke come around after the death of his mother, Zolin.
Zolin died in an auto crash and ever since then Duke has not been himself and Pamela seems to be a spoiler.
Now married to Donna, Duke is giving her a handful already.
And taking Pamela in will trigger a lot of the unexpected and he never wants that to happen.
Staring into the eyes of Donna, he continued his phone conversation. "Mum is not what you think. I just want to be alone with Donna and Duke, that's all—"
"Shut up son, you can't control that boy. He has more than you think inside of him. It is part of the family and you know it and don't you ever pretend you don't. Come on and don't be silly. He called me on phone and told me a lot and you know what? Whether you like it or not I am coming in. Expect me next week—"
"But—" Alex stopped when he noticed Pamela had hung up.
He could hardly believe Duke was all the while in communication with her grandmother, Pamela.
Looking away from his phone, he caught the inquisitive eyes of Donna staring at him. "It is your mother Pamela, right? Did you tell her she is not welcome here?"
Alex nodded and shuddered.
Donna now getting uneasy decides to keep the conversation going. "We have had enough in the past—not anymore Alex and who on earth told her where we live?"
"Duke did" He replied in shock.
"I know that boy is capable of anything. He is a betrayal and now he wants that witch here—"
"Enough Donna," Alex stopped her. "My mother is not a witch as you think and besides you are only a stepmother to Duke and you are not Duke's mother. He knows that Donna and don't you think he doesn't—and you know what Donna? I don't think he likes the idea of you trying to ruin his life for him—back off Donna."
Donna felt the weight of Alex's words. They came piercing through her eardrums like burning spares.
She sighed and hurried out of the sitting room. If there was anything she felt sad about was the fact that Alex was not competent enough to rule over his family.
And now with Pamela Xobed wanting in, she knew her days with Alex are numbered.
"You don't mean to tell me you have been looking at that thing for hours now and—"
Nathan lifted his hand to stop James. "Don't start James. I am seeing a lot from this computer you call a thing. I discovered that only Duke looked different from all the teens in Moleaf High."
Nathan's eyes fixed at the computer and for seconds didn't even bother to blink.
James who had been sitting down some distance away in Nathan's office going through a magazine stood to his feet and hurried to Nathan's desk. "Scroll up a bit, let me see that." He read through the content on the monitor for a while.
"Duke Rexon implicated in a mysterious crime in Texas 2014 but vindicated before the investigation began—what a hell does that mean?"
Nathan looked away from the screen and shrugged. "I don't know. He got a rich father and a lot could have happened you never can tell—by my research, he got his hands on a lot of really odd things and that keeps me wondering how he escaped all of it—"
"His father is the big boss." James shot in.
Nathan still doing some Google search opened up another relevant page of Duke Rexon and suddenly reacted. "James, look at this!"
James who was about to stroll to his seat spun around and focused on the monitor again. "November 2012, Alex Rexon was hospitalized and was discharged 4 months later by Doctor Paul Flowell." Nathan read out loud.
"Doctor Paul Flowell the medical director of Kliss Medical said the brain cells have recovered and Duke was fit to leave the hospital—"
"You mean Duke Rexon got a brain problem and the school authority never got this history of him?" James asked angrily.
"Perhaps, but I think there is more to be read, let's see..." Nathan's eyes are still on the monitor.
Minutes later, he looked away and spins his chair around for a while, and never stopped staring into the eyes of James. "Brain problem is a bad illness I must say and I am not so sure Moleaf High Knew about his history. I mean about Duke's mental illness perhaps in the past. And when kids do suffer such, a lot can happen. I think Alex Rexon and his wife Donna will be having a handful already. That boy is not 100% alright because if he is. He wouldn't have acted the way he did to her stepmother the other day—hmm, Doctor Paul. I have to see him. I think he has a lot to say about Duke Rexon."
James now in deep thoughts finally sat down on his seat. "Most of the crimes in Lisbon can we perhaps link it to Duke?" He finally asked.
Nathan kept quiet for minutes and then ventured. "That will be a difficult one to say. You have to catch a criminal in the act or have solid evidence to nail him before you can say yes. But I can say that crime cases shot up when Alex and his family arrived in Lisbon and nothing more."
James knew Nathan never wanted to be exact about the recent incidence of late especially that of Edison's. His mind still wandered for a while and then stopped. "If that boy has some health issues specifically this mental illness. I am quite certain he may be suffering from a relapse and if he is not seeing his doctor for perhaps is routine checkups. I am afraid we already have a suspect, Nathan."
Nathan knew James got a point and he also knew Doctor Paul Flowell must be visited to merge the unparallel lines running through his head ever since he started investigating Edison's case and the students of Moleaf High especially those with violent tendencies.
Staring at the wall clock ahead of him he knew the day was almost over.
Why was Edison murdered in the first place?
And why was he researching students with abnormal tendencies? And suddenly something happened!
His mind worked on Edition's actions before his death for a while and finally, he dropped it with a sigh. "I have to see Doctor Flowell tomorrow or perhaps you will be assigned. I am certain he will have a lot to tell about the Rexons. I am delighted our investigation is leading us somewhere and Edison's killers will soon be fetched out."
James who heard Nathan's confident words put on a smile and only wished the investigation of Edison's death ends soon and the killer caught.
But then the question he kept asking himself was. Can a teen be involved in Edison's gruesome death?
Alex Rexon stood frozen in the doorway as he looked into the eyes of Pamela.
Pamela held firmly to her traveling bag in one hand and the other, a walking stick. "Are you not going to let me in?" she asked angrily. "You are looking at me as if you haven't seen me before—let me in, damn it."
Alex stood aside as he watched his mother walk-in but didn't forget to help her with her huge bag. That Alex never stopped wandering what she got in it.
"Why did you come?"
Pamela ignored his son's first question as she kept on looking around. "You got a lovely taste son. Your sitting is now heaven on earth and that's nice—you don't mean to tell me you put all these alone. Donna is here with you, right?"
"Don't start Mum. I can see your memory has not failed you even at eighty-four but sincerely you shouldn't dig the hole again. Donna and I have married and your opinion doesn't matter at all—all I ever wanted was my happiness and nothing more if you ask me. And after Zolin died, I have to move on—"
"You may have your life to live but I still have some say Alex." Pamela intruded staring at Alex.
Alex dropped her bag down that looked too old fashion for his taste and then looked away. "Why did you come here, mother?"
This time Pamela looked set to answer that same question coming the second time from Alex.
Sitting down with her legs crossed, she began slowly. "Duke needs me and that's why I came. And you know what son? Your question is irrelevant and that's why I ignored it at first—don't you get it?"
Alex knew her mother will always feel superior in all their conversation and he doesn't like that at all. Her words stink and felt why she can't even smell all of it. And most times he has this suspicious feeling she got some secrets he knew nothing about and she wasn't ready to say. "Duke is alright. Why don't you leave him alone?—"
"You are wrong Alex." Pamela interrupted. "The question is why did Duke not leave me alone?"
