The four of us loved to frolic by the bank, several meters down the marketplace. It had become our favorite spot. We would either watch as eagles down onto the water to catch some fish while eating chicken skewers or simply talk as the scenery across the river unfolded before us.
Unlike most nobles, my parents did not forbid me from spending time with my new friends, who belonged to the common people. They had always allowed me to choose where my happiness lied, supporting me for every decision I took.
"Real friendship is one of the many treasures of life," Father had said to me when I'd asked him what he thought of me hanging around with Niko, Ivan and Mel. "We would never deprive you of that."
"Indeed," my mother added. "But know this, Lily. Like all the different kinds of love, your affection for your friends will not be without its challenges and heartaches. So be wise."
"Understood, Mother," I said.
