Sara pulled back, the specks of silver in her coal-black eyes shimmering like stars. Shimmering with mischief. She grinned like a fox.
My jaw was slack, my heartbeat galloping. It was so fast it rang in my ears, drummed against my ribs. I was completely disoriented by the kiss.
"You okay?" asked Sara.
"Yes, I'm fine—" I was confused as to how Sara appeared so buoyant and cheerful. And then it came to me that I was smiling. The sheer boldness of it, of kissing in the library. And with the prettiest girl I knew. A flicker of Niko's face suddenly entered my mind but I brushed it off, and thought no more of why it happened.
I found myself willingly reciprocating Sara's playfulness, inclining my head to her. "Now, will you tell me what the queen is up to?"
One corner of her lips curled upward, and I was reminded of how soft they were on mine seconds ago. "She suspects something."
